Title: Avast stopping my internet connection? Thats a good one!
Post by: Dragonhawk on September 20, 2009, 10:50:27 AM
Dear makers of the AV,

I will stop using you AV because I don't like it anymore. I do have you software for like a half year now and it worked very well. Now I do have a big question for you. How do AV protect my when your software is blocking my whole internet connection? How it started.

I had Avast home free ED en it worked for allmost a half year very well. Now, 2 weeks ago it started with strange problems. In the first days it blocks only the first 1 min my internet connection and a week later it was getting worser and worser. Now i don't have my internetconnection, only if i stop the software of yours. A bit strange because it was 3 months ago that I changed some configuration thinks. In thats months later I changed nothing it is. Now I'm internet without your software is active.. TELL ME, WHAT THE F.CK happend?

Sorry if you will see spellfaults in it. I do got dislexion.

What firewall do you use?
Does it allow access for the avast! files?
(ashWebServ.exe and others)

You may have to remove the avast! entries and the start browsing, this will force it to ask again and then you can allow it.

What was your previous antivirus?
How was it removed?

avast shouldn't be blocking any connection, as it only scans, does not block.
Maybe a problem with your hosts file, maybe your computer is infected and you need to get clean.
The errors you've posted seems just verbose of the logs.

Any other security program that could interfere?
If you disable WebShield, can you browse properly?

I have the exact same problem and have had for a long time.  I get the message 'website found.  Waiting for reply' in IE and it also doesn't work in FF.  However I know I am connect to the net as Email and any streaming content still works when the browsers won't unless you stop and start Web Shield.

I have the same problem. Explanation:

1) I can go to the internet fine.
2) After an hour or more of browsing, NONE of my browsers can connect (IE, FF, Chrome).
3) However, I can still play online games without a problem.
4) If I restart the computer the problem goes away.

I'm running a Vista 32bit system with a Firewall (The problem is not the firewall) and another utility program that alerts me (barks) when anything wants to do something on the registry, etc. I run Malwarebytes and actively run process explorer to see what's running in the background. I also modified msconfig and control what programs/services run and whatnots... Anyway, I don't believe I have a virus infection, root kit, etc.

I have done some testing and I uninstalled the Firewall because most connection problems will find the root there. However, the problem still came back without the firewall. I uninstalled avast and the problem went away with it. By process of elimination, avast is the cause of this problem.

Now I really like your software and I am willing to stay with you guys but I need your help in trying to figure out what's going on with this.

Thanks in advance for your help.

i have the same problem - i just got a new computer (well its an old one that has been cleaned). the internet was working fine for about 10 minutes while i was waiting for the avast home ed to install. As soon as the computer rebooted and was up and running, i couldn't get onto any websites. i found this forum (using my laptop) and decided to "stop on-access protection" and the internet works again!!!
I've used avast before on my old laptop and its worked fine for about 2 years. So what should i do? get a different antivirus? by the way, how do i uninstall it?
thanks!

I am having the same problem and have read in these forums of this browser freeze issue going back to at least March. I have XP Pro SP3 with 3gb ram on a 1.8 GHz dual-core. I flip back and forth between IE7 and Firefox 3.5.4. I don't usually have more than 2 tabs open at once (not much of a multitasker). I'll use a Facebook example (but it is not limited to Facebook usage): I'm transitioning into a Facebook app and it never gets past the "loading ..." message. I click refresh and the screen flashes but the message remains the same. If I click the "x" to stop it from trying to load and then attempt to navigate into another app, I cannot ... but occasionally I can get back to the home page. From there, I cannot navigate anywhere else (even via a link). I close the browser, reopen it and try to connect to Google and get "Found website, Waiting for reply" or something to that effect but cannot connect.

Essentially, I've lost my internet connection (even though other computers in the house have not). The only way to regain functionality is via reboot. Task Manager says ashWebSv.exe is eating 90-100% of my cpu when this happens.

I have literally disabled everything else to determine if there is a conflict and the only time the freeze doesn't happen is if I have shut down avast! before going online, which is really not much help to me, now is it ...

I'm using avast! version 4.8.1201 home edition. I'd hate to have to switch AV programs as, up until about a month or so ago, it suited my needs perfectly and I found it quite reliable. Unfortunately, this freeze up happens multiple times a day and there's no way I want to live with it. Other than the gazillion MS updates that bombard me regularly and Skype (which is almost always off - not just offline, but off), I haven't installed anything new which may have caused the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi SJesMe, Welcome to the forum :)

...I'm using avast! version 4.8.1201 home edition...

Really? The latest program version is 4.8.1356. I'd suggest that you update it to that version first, to see if that helps some.

Hi folks,

Avast gets the blame, but the the error is with XP, it can be "a socket for unreachable host, caused by a W32 Time error"

That's probably a valid idea Scott, but before you smile and point a finger at the outdated version, please do note that (1) it was working fine until a month ago and (2) this complaint seems to be a recurrent one amongst users, regardless of version.
(See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=34305.0)

Nonetheless, I will upgrade just so we are all on the same page.

Polonus, I can't seem to get that page to load ...
Edit: As of this morning it did but I'm not sure how that relates to the problem?

Thanks for the information. However, how come the problem goes away with Avast not present.

Had Avast long time; have current key.  No changes made.  First thing this morning Internet Explorer and Chrome both stopped working for first time.  IE would say website found.  Waiting for reply forever.  Chrome would say This webpage is not available immediately.  I rebooted.  I found that if I paused Web Shield provider, Internet would work.  Resume Web Shield and Internet would stop working.  What should I do?

First would have been to read the full topic and answer the various questions ashed of the original poster.

What firewall do you use?
(Edited from original) Does it allow access for the avast! ashWebSv.exe file ?

You may have to remove the avast! entries and the start browsing, this will force it to ask again and then you can allow it.

Polonus,

I tried following your directions:

How to Fix Time Error
RESOLUTION:-

1] Open a Command Prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.

2] In the Command Prompt type the following commands. After each command press the Enter key.:-

    net stop w32time
    w32tm /unregister
    w32tm /register
    net start w32time

3] Close the Command Prompt window.

But only the first and last command prompts would take; the others said they were invalid and I typed them exactly as written.  Any suggestions?

I do have the same problem as everyone else, but the first thing I do when I boot my machine is reset my time manually.  When I'm online and try to update the time via Internet Time, it is off by 2 minutes, but I know my time has to be correct for any AV software to work properly.

The other thing that happens to me is that since I can't get online with either FF or IE (I really don't use IE), I found that my IP address needs to be renewed.  I suspect this is caused by my Internet provider who likes to change it on its customers daily and either Avast or my firewall is preventing it from happening and they are not happy with me.  So what I am doing is going into Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right click Local Area Connection -> Repair.  This causes my system to renew my IP address and I can get online.  But it's a pain in the butt to have to do this when I may have just signed off 15 minutes ago.  Any other ideas?  Thanks.

I have the same problem with Vista.

MSN worked ok. But IE8, Chrome and Firefox wouldn't open webpages.
Chkdsk runs every time my PC starts up!! (no idea why - not sure if this is related)

I ran an antivirus scan - but there was an error at the end: it couldnt access c:\programs\avast4 (or similar) because the folder was corrupt !

I figured out today that the internet issue was because of the Web Shield: when I deactivate it the internet works fine.

Why does WebShield suddenly stop me from browsing the internet?
I updated Avast again today, it rebooted the PC, had the chkdsk which I skipped, tried the w32time commands, and the WebShield problem is still there :(

Help??

If you have read the previous posts, commonly it isn't the ashWebSv.exe stopping you but the firewall stopping it, so please answer the questions in the quoted text in Reply #22 above.

I completely uninstalled my firewall (OA Premium) while leaving Avast working and still have the problem of not being able to access the Internet unless I manually go into Control Panel -> Network Connections -> right click Local Area Connection -> Repair.  This causes my system to renew my IP address and I can get online.  I tried turning off the Web Shield and putting it back on.  I then reinstall my firewall (clean install) allowing both AV and firewall as trusted exclusions, cleaned the machine, and am malware-free.  I rebooted several times; the machine works fine otherwise.

I had this problem as well, it started about the same time that the original post was posted.

I have been using Avast Home for years, and recently built this computer maybe a year ago. I was using Comodo firewall, Ad-Aware Anniversary free edition, and PCTools ThreatFire. First I thought that the reason I was unable to use my connection was dew to my USB wireless going out. So I replaced it with a D-Link PCI card, and that did nothing to fix my problem. So I did a reformat of my computer (I was having other problems too). After a clean reinstall of Windows Vista x64 I proceeded to install the latest versions of all my drivers, security programs, and Firefox. The problem happened again. I had no viruses and no malware, as this was a clean system.

I thought that a windows update or a driver update might be the culprit. So I reformatted again turning off the Automatic Update feature built into Windows. Installed all the old drivers and tried the internet, and it worked fine (only trusted sites). I then reinstalled all the security software (Comodo, Avast!, Ad-Aware, ThreatFire) and FireFox, and after about 30 minutes of surfing the internet stopped loading in both FireFox and Internet Explorer. At this time I still had not done any Windows updates or driver updates.

Knowing that a Windows update or a driver update was not to blame, I reformatted again. This time I did all the Windows updates and all the driver updates and the internet worked fine. So I tried reinstalling each of the Security products one by one. I started with Comodo, and the internet worked fine. Then Ad-aware, and the internet worked fine. Then Avast!, and the internet stopped responding. So I uninstalled Avast! and the internet was back. Then I tried ThreatFire and still no problems.

I thought it might be a conflict with Avast! and another security product. So I did another reformat, and this time I updated Windows and all the drivers. I then installed Avast! by itself and i lost my internet again.

I uninstalled Avast! and installed ZoneAlarm, WinPatrol, and Avira. Everything is working fine now, but I HATE Avira. Please fix this problem so I can switch back.

Bump.

Anyone got any ideas as to the cause of this problem?

I also had the problem listed in this post: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=50882.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=50882.0)

I realized with me I had to play around with some port settings on my firewall and now everything is working fine.

The other problem I still have is that my clock doesn't keep time and I have to manually fix it every time I boot the machine.  I know AV and firewalls need to have accurate times for them to work.

I'm having the SAME problem!  As soon as Avast 5 was installed, I find out that Internet Explorer browser does not work.  Funny but I can surf the web using my AOL browser but I really prefer IE.  I have to disable the web shield in order to surf the web, but I really rather not do that.  I to am becoming extremely frustrated with Avast as my previous version worked just fine.

Well this topic amongst others gives information about checking your firewall isn't actually blocking avast and not the other way round. It also asks questions about what firewall you are using. So I suggest that you read through this topic and answer the question about firewalls and try the suggestions and then report your findings.

AOHell's browser I believe uses proprietary protocol and as such isn't monitored by the web shield.

A temporary fix would be to stop the web shield, but that means you aren't being protected by it.

Hello
I think I had the same problem.
I needed to 'repair' my internet connection every 15-30 minutes with my DSL connection (and disconnecting the modem when I use mobile broadband connection).
First I thought it was because of firewall problem. I used Comodo Internet Security, firewall and defence+ only.
Unistalled it and tried other firewall (Online Armor, PC Tools, and Private Firewall).
Still got the same problem. I did repair the XP W32, DNS cache, TC/IP repair etc, no success. I almost blamed my modem  ;D
Finally I turned Avast web shield of then everything works fine until now. My connection never goes down.

I currently use Avast 5, Online Armor Free, and Win Patrol. MBAM and SAS for on demand scan only. XP Pro SP3.
Turning off the web shield might be not the best solution for me. But I do like Avast a lot so I keep using it.
I've been using Avast for years.
