Title: Update question/issue
Post by: cska133 on October 11, 2009, 05:40:48 PM
hallo,

at first take a look at the screenshot, my question is related to it.
When I turned the pc on today I got automatic update (9:30h), this is OK. Looking on the protocol it conformed this.
My settings is to update every 240min=4hours. It means that the next update should be at about 13:30h. But in the protocol there is no such entry ???
Taking a look on the small configuration settings there is a text said that the last update was on 13:57h  ??? What dopes this mean?
Below is written that a new version is avaible - new version of what???

so, why the entry in the protocol doesnt match the last update time? Why there wasnt update after 4 hours=240min as set up?

Does this ussue has something common with Windows Firewall in Windows XP because today I turned the firewall on? But there wasnt any notification about this... I still dont want to try manuall update, because I wait for the next 4hours update interval in about 30min.

Do you have any ideas?

probably a new programm version, latest is 4.8-1356

It will check for new defs every 240 min, but that does not mean that there are any new defs every 240 min
so the log shows when it found and downloaded new defs, not when it was checking ( i think, correct me if i am wrong)

Here you can se the updates
program http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-4-home_pro-revision-history.html
virus def http://www.avast.com/eng/vps_history.html

Virus def is automatic, but program updates is a warning, (defult settings)  but you can sett it to automatic if you want

See page 37 in user guide
avast! User Guides and Manuals http://www.avast.com/eng/download-user-guides-and-manual.html

There is logic, it saves those on dial up for example, and allows them to best choose when to update for existance. A program update is particularly big...
You should have seen a green sliding box telling you to update
Looks like this:
Right click avast! tray icon --> click about avast!
You should be able to see what version you have.

This is the most recent version. The entry in the log viewer is just the reference to the notice that you would see.

The update check, is merely that, if there is not a new version, then there will be nothing to download.

ups I mean 1351, from August.
so this is old .
what for is this option, (look at screenshot)? The program update is set to automatic, why is doesnt update the program automatically?

PLEASE do an vir.def. update and tell me if there are new definitions!
I know that when there are no new def, it will be nothing downloaded BUT please confirm this right now at this moment!

is there a removal tool?

The normal add remove programs for an uninstall should be fine.

There is also the avast! Uninstall Utility, http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html), this should only be needed if there is a problem using the add remove programs function.

What else should be ???
And there are no error messages, either in ZoneAlarm or in Avast.
Avast shows me that there is new version, but no auto update?!

Maybe removing avast.setup from ZA settings, booting, allowing it again.

I don't know if it explains, but avast update policy is:

avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn't, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file. The updates are incremental.

ashServ.exe sends ping packets to find out if the Internet connection is alive. You can turn this off by checking the "My computer is permanently connected to the Internet" box in the avast Program Settings > Update (Connections) page.

The program updates are released but to avoid excessive load on the servers the auto update check happens randomically every 7 days and it's not checking every time you connect to the Internet as with the iAVS checks. Every avast installation has a unique, randomly generated GUID ("general unique identifier") associated with it (it is generated during installation). This ID is random, but fixed. They use this value to determine when the updater pops up on YOUR machine, i.e., the program already knows that the update is there, but it won't tell you until it's your turn. You have to allow the update, i.e., it's not a forced and automatic update. avast starts warning you 3 weeks before it actually expires.

I have this option is actually activated. What does it cause now in relation to the updates?

What exactly you did write here I can not follow you, sorry.
What means "avast starts warning you 3weeks before it expires"? Who is talking about expiration here... I mean my avast program version which is 1356 and I have 1351 and this could not be updated automaticlly.

What do you mean, could you please explain it easier please.

I don't know if it explains
I just post the policy, not an explanation.
As you've said, it shouldn't be happening that way.
