AV and AS Uninstallers
[1] Having trouble uninstalling your Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware?
Sometimes uninstalling your anti-virus-program or anti-spyware-program can be rather troublesome. Some may even defy your usual uninstall process altogether, while others may leave a host of stuff behind.
[2] Other Uninstallers
As a service to our visitors, we also publish other uninstallers from well-known programs.

Great job/help. Many thanks. ;D

very useful, YoKenny.
now, let's hope the bad guys don't get ideas and do a number on this... like a drive-by 'clean out' of installed AVs. ;)

Thanks for 'the good press' here.
I try to keep the list constantly updated.
Would you want me to post updates here too?

-
Welcome Fred
It would be good to keep your uninstallers list here if it is not to much trouble for you.
-
I try to keep the list constantly updated.
Is your intention to include AV and AS only?
It seems to me that the list could be enriched with security app. in general. E.g. Firewalls. Some of them screwed many PC's also and 'can be rather troublesome' - to use your expression.
-
@majoMo: Funny you should mention that...
Site has this subjects (for now):
[1] Having trouble uninstalling your Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware?

Fred, the ability to use PM and edit your profile has been restricted to those with 20 or more posts due to spammers.

Hi fredvries -
You might note on the web page that Computer Associates uninstaller requires a remote connection from CA to the person's computer for this uninstaller to work.
***
-
@CharleyO: Thank you for you comment.
I'll check it next morning and update the item with more CA uninstallers.
-
avira AV
It seems that the uninstaller is: hXXp://dlpro.antivir.com/package/removaltool/win32/en/removaltool-win32-en.exe
The uninstaller in your useful site is older (2006) - and I think it comes with Avira v. 6 (it's the uninstall module). Also the user must to have their system in english language to be effective.
;)
-
majoMo,
That is a virus removal tool made available by Avira, not the uninstaller.
-
Edited: Incorrect information, see below.
-
You sure?
-
Well I though I was, but I haven't downloaded it as you did. Looks like they have changed the name not a removal tool to uninstall/remove registry entries.
Unless this is what they use now.
Avira RegistryCleaner
Normally the Avira RegistryCleaner removes all entries that were created by AntiVir. In this way, it prepares your system for the installation of a new AntiVir version.
-
The registry cleaner you mention is the one I've used, first saw recommended on this forum, and recommend to others, to remove a lot of the registry traces of any AV.
(It will also remove at least some of the Avast entries.)
In my experience of using it, it is best to only scan the "H_Key_Local Machine" keys, as a lot of the "current user" keys find stuff that is unrelated to the AV, if any kind of immunity program has been used. (I think. The HKey current user keys shown in the pic appear to be from SpywareBlaster preventing certain domains.)
The registry is the only area it appears to clean, so if there are any active files remaining (in C:\anywhere) I guess they should be nullified without a reg entry. But I don't know that for sure. Things like shared .dll's are a bit of a mystery to me.
-
Useful conversation.
• The Avira AntiVir RegistryCleaner was already in the 'Other Uninstallers' section of my List of Av and As Uninstallers
• The Uninstaller for Avira is indeed for v6 (but I haven't been able to find one that is more recent).
• The Avira AntiVir RemovalTool 3.0 is indeed a stand alone anti-virus scanner for a few prevalent virusses.

Has anybody ever wondered why these programs do not do a better job of
cleaning up after themselves?
How much do people hold it against a application if it leaves chunks of itself behind?
I use add/remove programs,windows explorer search,and regedit.
Those who remove themselves well, definitely leave a better taste in my mouth, than those who trash the motel room.

Well, that was the reason I started this 'quest' and maybe it will help companies to create better programs.

<snip>
I have often wondered why and being the trusting sort (NOT) is it in their best interest to do a good job.
You only have to browse the forums for issues in installing or running avast with remnants of a previous AV. To the user they are often quick to blame the 'new' AV as they aren't aware of the mess left behind by their 'old' AV.
Whilst some will come to the support forums of the new AV to seek assistance, but others may think the new AV is rubbish and go back the devil they know.
So some might think that there is no incentive for the old AV to get it right by running the specialist uninstall/clean-up tool as a part of their uninstall routine, told you I was a trusting sort ;D
-

As more and more people think it is a useful site, maybe it should get pinned. ;D
I wouldn't count on getting it pinned. :)
Since the Update Thread isn't pinned and it's been viewed over 500,000 times.
There are quite a few other popular threads that aren't pinned and really don't have to be.
Every time there is activity, it brings the post back up to the top.
-
Ah yes, but hopefully the decision to pin or not to pin will not be taken because of the number of views but on the possible importance of the topic. In the end I won't be able to find new uninstallers and this topic will assuredly fade away into obliviance.
-
Great list! Very convenient.

Ah yes, but hopefully the decision to pin or not to pin will not be taken because of the number of views but on the possible importance of the topic. In the end I won't be able to find new uninstallers and this topic will assuredly fade away into obliviance.
There are many topics which are equally or possibly more important, but if they were all given pinned status then the first page of results would be pinned topics and that would annoy me no end.
I have seen this in some forums and it is a real pain in the rear.
Many of the regular helpers on the forum will no doubt have saved the link. I know I have and can pass it on or more specifically a direct link to one of the more common culprits Norton, McAfee, etc. etc. to those whom we feel need to ensure their previous AV is removed.
The main problem as I see it is that for the most part the user hasn't got a clue that the problem they are experiencing could relate to remnants of their previous AV. So they wouldn't actually be looking for a list of Uninstallers, so even if it were pinned, that wouldn't achieve anything as they wouldn't be looking for that.

My question is why can't Microsoft/Apple/Unix/etc. make a decent universal uninstaller? Their 2nd level techs use one that could really screw up a machine, but is probably the most effective total eraser. It's not at the website in this thread and I'll do everyone a favor by not naming it. Let the tech use it when all else fails. Then they're responsible. I use CCleaner, then go into the registry and wipe out any remnants of the program.
-
God forbid that they ever do, as in the wrong hands your are totally screwed.
The real answer is why can't program makers get the Uninstaller right in the first place and have an easily available uninstall tool, should there be a problem with the uninstall, corrupt file, etc. Then there would be less need for a list of Uninstallers if they were easy to find.

I think it should be a sticky. :)
If it happens, edit the first post on page one and insert something at the top of it to say something like "the latest uninstallers version can be found on the last post of this thread.
Of course, since the link always seems to go to the same (but updated) page, that probably isn't necessary.

That has already been mentioned earlier in the topic.
Personally I'm against that there are other worthy topics and considerations, for this is the avast support forums.

If not. how do you think this (http://lists.thedatalist.com/index.html) guy has done it? I'm not saying to make it similar to that but something like that.
And the banner can be still more reduced sideways I think, so that it matches the indent of the text..

Hi nmb and fredvries,
Nice Dutch link to av-uninstall tools here:
http://www.gratissoftwaresite.nl/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=676
Might come easy, because uninstalling av programs can be a real pain in the proverbial behind...
With the help of Revo Uninstaller, de-installing as 'Experienced user' (2-nd window), you will first make a new system restore point, after which Revo will start the genuine ininstall program of the software in question, NEVER restart after this "own uinstaller" has finished, the delete every issue from the registry er (by tagging ONLY the bold-printed items) and finally delete all concerning folders and files. After you have performed all this in some cases a fresh restart can be needed.

Bear in mind that the 4.8 one will still be supported for a while, not too sure how long, as no one really knows how long 4.8 will be supported...
Also, the official location of the version 5 one will probably change...
Maybe point out the fact that the 'Info' Page contains the one for 4.8, but the download link contains the one for version 5?
-Scott-
-
@ spg SCOTT : You are right in every respect.
• The updated tool still removes older versions (only avast 5.0 was added) , so there's no real problem
• If possible, could you alert me if the location changes?
• That's correct because there isn't a proper page for 5.0. I'll keep a sharp lookout for a new page (but I hope avast will simply update this one).
-
I didn't realise that the newer version removed all versions...
I will keep an eye on it, and (if someone hasn't before me) I will let you know when it changes. Most likely, the new one will be moved to the old location so the info page at least will be accurate...
Interestingly, I checked both files, and the file version hasn't changed, but the size is reduced and icon changed, so I wonder what actually has changed... ???

Hi fredvries,
[10mar10] Update to my Ultimate List of Uninstallers (http://www.uninstallers.org).
...
This link is for your knew site, uninstallers.org, however as I see it, it is not quite ready...maybe have a link on that page to the blogspot location for the time being? As someone following that link you posted will not get to the blogspot one...
What do you think?
-Scott-
-
@ spg SCOTT: Thanks for bringing this to my attention but I know it's not * ahum* quite ready but it still redirects after a few seconds to my blogspot page. On the first pages of this topic the links still get you to uninstallers.blogspot.com but I was thinking a bit about the future. Nobody hardly ever visits the subsequent pages and hits the link there. So I think it doesn't really constitute a problem.
-
...but it still redirects after a few seconds to my blogspot page....
Haha...I never noticed that ;D
Ignore my comment then, I am just too impatient...

polonus
-
@ Kei: We're here to serve and support you ;)
2 polonus: It's my pleasure.
-
Kei,
I and many others have found the Ask toolbar very difficult to remove.
What I did was to uninstall and do a clean install (with the latest build) of the FoxIt Reader and made sure I didn't install the toolbar. Reboot twice, otherwise FF gets messed up (at least for me and I had to reinstall FF). I had to do this on 3 machines, so now I know how to do it.
I also went into IE, which I never use, but also found it there, and manually deleted it there but only after I did the FoxIt clean install first.
I then used Revo Uninstaller and make sure I got rid of all traces...and I finally did!
I hate the fact that Ask sneaks into things without your knowledge, so now I do Custom installs to make sure I'm not getting any extra bonuses.
-
Hi SafeSurf! Yeah, I do a reinstall too, as soon as I find anything. It's funny that you should mention
Foxit. I am thinking of throwing it out the window, as even though I didn't install ask toolbar, there is a red ask button seen in the program when you open it.
I don't know if it's dangerous/undesirable or what. With my next reinstall, I probably won't put it on the computer.
Where I got Ask toolbar was as a part of Imgburn 2.5.1. Wow.... Didn't I learn my lesson.... The strange part about that install is that as much as I tried to untick the boxes so it wouldn't install, it seems as though it installed anyway. (I don't know, if there were just something wrong with my system.)
You don't know how mad I was! XD
-
Hi Kei
same with me - perhaps my XP version, but couldn't install Foxit without Ask toolbar not matter what
- rather than resort to post-install surgery, I dispensed with Foxit
-
When the new build of FoxIt came out (I scan with Secunia PSI every week), I decided then to uninstall and do a clean install at that point. There has been a lot of talk on the Secunia forum as well as other malware forums about Ask and how nasty it is to remove. But they are not only in FoxIt, so that is why I now do the Custom installs.
-
Hello,
Please start a new topic and start discussing people :) Do not hijack this post.
Thx
nmb
-
Oh we've been there before, I don't really want to revisit, and I did start a thread but no-one as yet has actual said that they installed the new version of Foxit and did not end up with Ask Toolbar as well - could someone please confirm that they have done so. In truth, DavidR hit the nail on the head when he asked why I did not simply update the version that was already loaded. Yes, silly me, David.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58072.msg489486#msg489486
I did try a custom install, in fact I tried everything except post-install surgery which in this case I was not prepared to do, basically on principle because Foxit had always been a ready alternative to Adobe. I was bl*t choking. But I did not try georges ultimate list of uninstallers either, in which case I might still have had Foxit on my system.
I did make use of [24] Norton/Symantec 2010 tool t'other day and excellent outcome (although did follow up with cleanout in registry). But regardless, outcome was trouble-free install of avast! Free. Wonderful stuff, George. And I do have a friend with Ask toolbar as a result of loading another program (as you say Safesurf, not only in foxit) so looks like I have chance to try out [01] Ask Toolbar uninstaller.
-
As my List of Ultimate List of Uninstallers (http://www.uninstallers.org) contains a specially written tool to remove the Ask toolbar (http://fred-de-vries.blogspot.com/2009/12/autoclean-ask-toolbar-remover.html), it's a bit strange to see some of the above posts that claim that the Ask toolbar is difficult to remove but that you only succeeded by using Rev0 Uninstaller.
Looks suspiously like advertizing to me.

are you speaking to me? I'm sorry if you are not, and I mistook you.
if you are, where do I say revo and what is rev0 supposed to mean? I don't understand you. please explain.
edit - my mistake George - I use Revo myself - no i just couldn't install Foxit without getting Ask Toolbar as well, and you are right that Ask Toolbar is a real bother to get rid of once its on your system. Thats why I thought best remove whole Foxit package.
-
@ mkis: Actually I was reacting to SafeSurf's initial post about removing the Ask Toolbar and his praise for The Rev0 Uninstaller. As that post could be read as advertizing for that uninstaller, I wouldn't want them to have the pleasure (read: hits) and naming it by its proper name because Google can detect it and count it.
-
I've used Revo for a while and I will concede that they are very advertizing oriented - they make it very tough for newbies to find their free product, which I prefer to their Pro product because it is simpler to use.
I see the ultimate list is growing. That is a good sign. I make sure to consult it now when i need to do an uninstall. :)
-
George is referring to my post, which in no way was meant to be "suspicious advertising." When I made my post, I was simply trying to help the other posters in this thread as I do with other posts, as I hope you do in your posts.
BTW...I'm not a "he [his]."
We all mean well and try to offer help to others and please let's keep it that way. And let's remember to treat each other with respect. Thank you.
Now, let's get back to the main focus of this thread...
-
Welcome to the forums SafeSurf.
There are not enough woman amongst the regulars on the forum, so please stick around
-
Thanks Mkis and to many others. I've been around for a while, but mostly watching the group dynamics at work in addition to learning things myself. Of course at times I need to speak up. So thank you very much :)

Removing my post
-
Has anyone looked at the RevoUninstaller?
www.revouninstaller.com/
adding the usual at the beginning.
I have been using it for over a year and it does a very thorough job.
I am not saying the webblog is not good, just an alternative.
Yep, I've been using it for a while now, Great little program.
-
Not sure why anyone would want to 'advertise' a general uninstaller in this topic if a site (http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/) is devoted to specific uninstallers.
Revo should contact me themselves if they want to advertise and not send one of their acolytes. I always wanted to use that word 'acolytes' in a post and now I see my chance ;)
-
acolytes
I was once accused of being one of those on a "Dragon" forum. ;D
There's a place for using a generic uninstaller but only when the 'specialist'
is unavailable. For an antivirus program, a generic uninstaller like Revo, certainly
is not a recommended product.
Why ask for a potential problem when avoiding one is what using the removal tool is
all about. ??? :o ???
-
You would rather label anyone that expresses their own opinion and gives information so another can make their own decisions.
-

Acolyte: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acolyte ahaaaa....Got it ;D

I think you've not quite understood this thread, and been rather tersely treated.
This is a link to a site that hosts specific tailored uninstallers for security programs.
That site is maintained by the OP. Rather well. And is a very useful resource, often referenced by those helping to troubleshoot installation problems with other security programs. The uninstallers linked within are designed by the vendors for the programs they are to remove.
Ideally the content or link would be in a sticky. Since it's not, it's handy to keep it near the top of page 1, which the OP does by regularly posting updates. The updates may also be useful for someone who has been waiting/hoping for a specific uninstaller to be released.
I think it could be improved, as was suggested earlier, by re-posting the link every few posts, or at the top of each page, since it's gone to 14 pages of updates by now. (Including it in a sticky would be even better. Then fredvries would only have to edit the sticky periodically. 14 pages of updates is a bit much to sift through.)
A discussion about Revo (which you can seriously bork your 'pooter with if you're not a bit careful, BTW) would probably best be in a separate thread, because it is a generic tool.
-
You would rather label anyone that expresses their own opinion and gives information so another can make their own decisions.
To remove a third party Anti Virus program prior to installing avast!, you could also use the instructions put together by Avast:
3rd party: Uninstalling third-party antivirus software (Removing your Current AV)
https://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=574 (https://support.avast.com/index.php?languageid=1&group=eng&_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=574)
This is the link I supply to the computer clubs after presenting the avast Security Seminar so that their members who will be switching to avast! will be able to do so without any issues.

This is a great list!
The only problem that I have is some of the links, when you go to get more information about the uninstall utility, show a banner ad to download a Registry Scanner to "fix errors" that seems to cause more problems than it solves. This third party ad has nothing to do with the program uninstaller, and some people think it does.
The sponsored link is hxxp://www.liutilities.com for which WOT (Web of Trust) gives a Yellow (Cautionary Rating) You should be able to see the WOT scorecard here:
http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/www.liutilities.com
The information to these links should probably not contain information to this third-party sponsored ad. Within my bookmark I have renamed it with a caution NOT to use the registry scanner.

Just shows how useless WOT is! ::)
Both WebRep and M86 SecureBrowsing rate it as safe. :)

With utter junk such as Uniblue SpeedUpMyPC produced by them, I'd hazard to say that WOT is right.
-
Jack 1000 was right in his mild critisism. I've changed some links to avoid users getting to a site where they are lured into downloading a defragmenter or other programs that aren't useful to their problems at hand.
