Title: another update problem
Post by: jegu on June 17, 2003, 10:43:10 PM
I can not update the virus definitions.

My guess is that the server list is empty (server.dat file is empty). I also tryed to uninstall the program or re install it without succes.

Anybody?

Hi,

servers.def file seems to be thrashed very rarely on some systems.

Please, download this file: http://www.iavs.net/iavs4pro/servers.def (http://www.iavs.net/iavs4pro/servers.def) and put it in your avast4\setup directory.

In future, this file will be digitally signed and won't allow overwriting of good file with the thrashed one.

The file still exists at the location given, don't try to click it as normal it won't display, your browser won't know what to o with a .def file.

Right click on the link and select 'save file as' or 'save link as' (depending on your browser), save it to somewhere you can find it later and follow the previous instruction.

Which one?
If you delete the servers.def file it will be downloaded again when you start the update process.

Looks like it is no longer there, sorry.

Do as Tech suggests, get rid of the empty servers.def file and do a manual Update, iAVS update. There is also a servers.def.lkg file (lkg = last known good) which you could copy and save as servers.def, providing that also isn't empty.

Hi, I also have the same problem. It used to work fine, but since 3 days when I (or Avast) try to update my virus defs, I get:
Last encountered error: Can't select any server for downloading (from 0).

I have already downloaded a new server definition file from http://www.iavs.net/iavs4pro/servers.def which I placed in the correct folder (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup), this doesn't help. Also, I have checked whether my connection is working in Settings > Update (Connections) > Proxy > Test Connection. When I do that I get: 'Cannot connect to server using these settings. Please change the Proxy server settings and try to test again'. However, the proxy settings haven't been changed (everything was working before). They are on Auto Detect (Internet Explorer settings) like they always were. Everything else internet related is working fine (surfing the web, e-mail checking etc etc). I am using Win2k and I don't have a firewall for outbound connections. What could be wrong?  :(

Thanks in advance!

Johannes

Sjocolaatje, my suggestions:
For avast proxy settings (if you don't use any) prefer NO PROXY at all rather than auto detection.
For servers.def, better just delete the file into the avast \setup folder and start updating.
Do you have a firewall? Is avast.setup allowed to connect?

Hi Tech,

Thanks for the suggestions.
For proxy settings: I have changed to NO PROXY, this doesn't help.
Servers.def: I have deleted the file and tried to update. This doesn't help.
I have no outbound firewall (meaning: anything from my computer is allowed to make outbound connections).

Any other suggestions? I am completely baffled. It was working just fine up until a few days ago... Should I try to reinstall?

Any other suggestions?
Post your setup.log file (or, at least, the last lines of it).
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\Setup.log

Simply download (right click, Save Link Target As) this file:
http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def

and put it in avast4\setup directory.

That's it.

Don't know why it sometimes happens (out of space on the disk, bad permissions, whatever). This should solve that.

Ok. I already did that once, and it still didn't work. The previous Tech advised me to remove it and go on without it, which still didn't work. Now I replaced it once again and it worked. Baffled. Thanks!
