Title: Problem after just installing.
Post by: Lucrin on November 10, 2009, 04:59:36 AM
Ok well I just installed the free home version of avast and I was just messing around testing some things and I seem to have found a problem. If I right click a file and select Scan "file name here" The Avast quickscan window pops up but an error come up with it. The error says "There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. Please install an email program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the Default Programs control panel." I don't understand why this error would pop up when I am trying to scan a file? No when I click ok the quickscan appears to go through with the scan but when it is done it just dissapears, without any prompt that everything was found to be clean or anything, is this normal? In case it matters I am using Windows 7 64bit.

Thanks

The whole point of the quick scan is that it is quick and by default doesn't report results, it is normally used to scan say a single file so you want to get on. If there are results displayed you then have to acknowledge/close these.

- To change the default settings - right click the avast 'a' icon, Program Settings, Common section, Show Explorer Extension Results.

What was the file that resulted in the error, was it an email database file ?

Ok thanks I just wanted to make sure that it was supposed to just disappear. No the file had nothing to do with email. The error does it no matter what the file is, or even a folder. No matter what I scan that message pops up and I have to click ok before the scan starts.

If avast alerts you will know all about it as all hell breaks loose with an audible and visual alert, so it is is quiet then no detection ;D

Can you capture an image of the message and post it.
This isn't something that I have come across before in the forums.

This is what happens when I right click and scan a file. In this example it was just a notepad file but it does it no matter what I try to scan. The scan engine just sits at 0 until I click ok and then it scans the object.

That really is weird as ashQuick.exe is the file called to do this scan (and it doesn't require or use an email program). I was kind of hoping that there would be a message from another application unrelated to avast.

Whilst this image looks like it is similar in format to the avast scanner window, I think that may be down to the OS graphics theme as the font of the Email text in the Window Title differs from that of the other window.

So I don't know if there is some form of Shell Context hooking conflict going on. I don't know if Shell Explorer (ShellExView)will work in win7 much less the 64bit version and that is generally what I would use to try and find any Shell Extensions that may conflict.

So do you have any other applications that have Shell Extensions ?

Other than that all I can think of is to try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

If you run a scan from the Simple User Interface... do you get the same message if you select to scan archives, while without archives it doesn't appear?

Ok well I ran a normal scan with and without archive files and neither gets that error. So it only comes up when I use the right click scan feature. By shell extensions I assume you mean added options in the right click menu? If that is what you mean then I also have WinRAR and the Adobe CS4 suite but that is all. Thanks for all the help so far :)

You're welcome.

Yes, that is what I meant by Shell Extensions, the right click context menu items.

Hopefully now we have one of the avast developers on the case we will get to the bottom of it.

Mine has the exact same problem any updates on this? It is highly annoying!!
Only happens on right click scan of any folder or file.  Doesn't happen if you open that folder from within the main program scanning window.

Win7 64 bit. Avast 4.8 email default is set to outlook.  How can we disable this silly message.

Can someone please address this issue?

This is probably because windows 7 doesn't ship with an email client and even though I have outlook set as my default email program and all send to email functions work fine. Even tried setting the default email program to windows live and still same issue, avast is trying to access a built in client ala vista/xp and it won't work on win 7. God only know why avast would need to access an enmail program while right click scanning a file or folder in the first place. Can you please fix this?

I like Windows Live Mail on Windows 7
