Title: Need testers for avast! External Control
Post by: RejZoR on June 10, 2004, 07:14:28 PM
Ok as most of you know that i'm a developer of third party "rescue kit" for avast!,i would need a few volunteers to help me with testing on Windows 9x workstations. I'm developing this tool on WinXP system so i cannot test every and each detail related to avast! that is running on Win9x systems.

avast! External Control program can be downloaded here:
www.security-ops.tk

TEST NO.1
Requirements:
Windows 95/98/Me
avast! 4.x
avast! External Control

Currently i need details on what do you see on first (Status) screen when you launch the program.
The info i'm interested is marked with red.
(don't worry about different version, this 1.1.130 is currently in developement).
Thanks

Rejzor,

Certainly I'll help with the Beta.
I happen to have a Win98 machine that has been running perfectly for a long time.  Let's see if we can put some excitement  back into it by messing it up.   ;D

Only joking.  Downloading it now.

Rejzor,

Ok. I don't know if the screeshot will come out right.
I never get them the way I want them.  Haha

Anyway,
the first line reads %resident%2
the next line reads %iavsupdate%2

One suggestion.  I think you need to add a "minimize" button.  I would like to have AEC open but out of sight.

? Is ashDisp.exe also in startup section on Win9x? I thought Win9x doesn't need ashDisp.exe to be running in the background!?

Also it seems Win9x has a different way of querying services status ???

Looks like i'll have to fix this asap :)

Can you check the regedit (Run section if you know where it is) and give me a screenshot if there are ashDisp.exe and ashMaiSv.exe entries in Run section.

Thanks again techie, this will help me very much :)

Yes they are both running.  Apparently, Win98 picks up these Avast processes and enters them in Startup.

It seems so.  Then again Win98 does everyting differently than say...ME or even XP.

I would if you tell me exactly where the "run" section is.
I ran Regedit and opened up Local Machine and Current Users first with no luck.  Couldn't find "run" section anywhere.

Hi minacross :)
Are you running Windows 98 ?

Techie101 can you check this entry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

If you could check if there are avast! ashDisp.exe and ashMaiSv.exe entries. If you wan't you can export me this part of registry and send it to my mail. Its strange, minacross's Startup section status is correct for Win9x,but your's shows as both startup keys are detected ??? (you can compare your and minacross screenshot.
Thanks to both for your time :)

Oh i have released v1.1.134 which has services status fixed. At least for now, until i can find another solution.

You mean "No Service Status (Running Win9x)" ?
Well thats the problem of Win9x. I don't know how to query service status on this OS. Only only know under WinNT/2000/XP/2003.

Rej,

I will not be able to run the registry check until Monday.  I am away from my home computer for a few days.

I will also attempt to determine how you can query the Win98 process function.

Although not at my computer, my laptop is running full blast so I will be on the Forum anyway.
