Title: Minimum config for Avast {Beta2} by GooglePack?
Post by: moxion on November 27, 2009, 12:40:27 AM
Hi my fellowship,
I installed Avast via the Google Pack plateform on a Sony Vaio Pentium M Centrino 1.73Ghz, 1.25G RAM with XP SP3 installed.
Ever since, scrolling down my gmail box or watching youtube streaming takes 100% CPU (with either Chrome or Firefox 3.5 browser with no add-ons or safe mode jumping to 80). Avast software is latest version 5.0.178.
Yet I even shut down the mail shield (I dont use outlook), the P2P shield, the IM shield, only the web, files and network shield are running.
Do I need to upgrade something (memory? Windows?...).
What bothers me is that it does not do it after I reboot. And no, Avast is not scanning my laptop every hour.
Any clue please? Thanks!
Maria.

First, you might not have been aware that 5.0 is currently in beta, 4.8.1367 is the latest regular release.

Do a program update as the latest beta build is now 5.0.239 I believe and see if that makes any difference.

Also browse the beta sub-forum http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15.0 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=15.0), but first see if the update does the trick.

The Mail Shield isn't just for Outlook, but other email clients too.

Edit: corrected latest build number.

Hi Maria
Something's definitely up!
I have the Google Pack avast! 5.0.178 'happily' installed and running with a minimum of fuss on an old AMD K6-2 500MHZ PC with 256MB, Windows XP SP3.
Are you sure no other AV software remains installed on the machine?

Thanks everybody!
@Vlad No other antivirus installed on my laptop.

I'm going to install 5.0.239 over GooglePack's 5.0.178 beta but how come Google Pack didnt propose the update since this new version has been released for a week now? ??? Shall I still trust Google Pack or uninstall the pack and rely on Avast non beta build version instead?

I wish I could upgrade it this way but after going through Step 1 to 3 of the upload/install, the update program does not find any newer release and says "already up to date" in the status. The upgrade function does not find the newer version  >:(

5.0.239 did install as an upgrade but not well. My Windows Security Center says the the antivirus is outdated yet I have the lastest program and virus list version. Plus, computer is still slow when I scroll a web page on Firefox or Chrome or when I stream a tiny video on facebook or else.
Then I uninstalled it all (since it was an upgrade) and reinstalled anew but still same pb.
So I'm going to setup Avast with its minimum monitoring (root...) and I'd like to install a free, light yet efficient firewall like Zone Alarm. Any reco on a good one that does not takes up all my CPU?
Thanks!

from now on, forget the google pack way... get your software directly on avast sites  ;) You can browse the forums for tips on firewalls, or start a new thread about it in the general topic section if you want.
