Title: HOW DOES AVAST COMPARE TO NORTON?
Post by: rocket_man38 on June 14, 2004, 03:37:36 AM
does it detect the same "big" viruses? such as ones that could make your harddrive not register?

I believe that Avast is every bit as good as Norton's if not better.

I find that Avast is less bloated (in code) and uses less resources to run than Norton.  In otherwords, Avast is efficient AND effective.

Avast auto-updates itself regularly, such that virus etc detection is excellent.   Also, the great people on this forum, including Avast employees, are very helpful and provide quick feedback.  You can't beat that!   ;D

As an aside, I know people who've run Noton AV only to see a virus etc basically trash Norton's (rendering it brain dead) while I've never seen that happen to Avast.

So I wouldn't hesitate to install Avast if I were you.

Try to get tech support from Norton!!!! LOL
with avast you get the benefit of this excellent forum for help with any problem you may encounter no matter how innocuous
Norton does not give a rats butt about your problem!
Stick with avast, it is much better IMHO.

The question is: how can someone consider NAV a smooth antivirus?  ;D

And on top of that I got a trojan a couple of weeks ago which none of the online scanners caught - not even the Symantec one - I'd already ahd to replace Nortons with Avast because it was causing blue screens on my computer and Avast caught the trojan - every time.  Getting rid of it was another story because it couldn't delete it but I was lucky and it was one that was relatively easy to get rid of manually - no fiddling around with the Registry.

Nope.  Symantec, Panda and Trend.
