Title: Has to be a virus issue - no error messages anywhere!
Post by: sportsguy on December 08, 2009, 02:15:02 PM
Vista x64 - Lastest service pak and upgrades
ASUS P5B board
8 gigs ram
(nice rig when working!)
Linksys wireless card
Avast Pro 4.8 latest version

been having this issue for two months as well as on a different machine with similar setup, different ASUS board
I have unloaded all services except the bare minimum needed to work,

Machine freezes completely, hard boot needed in full windows mode, no issues in safe mode
no error messages, no warning, doesn't matter if disk is loading, all activity ceases.
sfc /scannow shows no issues

When does it happen:
ONLY when connected to the internet
ONLY when a full scan has not been performed on the system drive before connecting
ONLY when the full scan has been done after downloading the latest viruses db and after rebooting after a freeze
full system scan at full strength = 0 viruses found
(how can i get a virus if i can't keep the machine connected for more than 5 minutes?)

windows defender is disabled

time between connecting to the network/internet and the freeze up. . . 1 second to 5 minutes. .

any suggestions? any hope? beuhler? beuhler?

thanks

Check the folder <avast>\data\log
Are there any files called unpXXXX (where XXXX is a random number) or *.mdmp there?
If so, send them to vlk (at) avast.com
They may contain more information about the problem (maybe a link to this thread).

Vlk explains how to create a dump file (only way to analyze I think) here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=22636.msg187340#msg187340 and here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=23283.msg193594#msg193594  ;)

Thanks

I have taken a look at them, and no unpXXX file. . . and today the computer did not freeze up!

I will look into the log files more to see what I can find, but there was a problem with the services service in the log file for the last several days, and its not here now. . . so that must be the offending service. . .

I will be back on the next freeze up!

thanks

What AV was used prior to installing Avast?
What other security software is installed/active?
Are the providers (Avast) set to normal sensitivity? (good idea.)
