Title: Help Needed - Reoccurring Problem
Post by: bob3160 on December 15, 2009, 03:28:31 PM
I need to reboot my system every day because each morning when I attempt to use my computer I'm greeted with the following error:
"The application was unable to start correctly (0X0000142)"
How do I find out which application is causing the continuing pain in the rump ???

Thanks in advance. :)

(Remember, my system stays on 24/7)

(Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit)

The event log would be the first place I would check.

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer.

May be in a different spot for XP, not sure though haven't used XP in a long time.

If you find out what application it is from the event viewer, you can look it up in your registry editor under:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

Or, if it only affects your profile,

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run

If the application is listed there, you can remove it from the registry, and it won't start anymore.

It could also be in your startup folder.

This doesn't really fix the problem with the software though, it just prevents it from starting up.  Find out what application is causing it, then do a google search with your error code and the application name to see if it's a known or common problem, and hopefully there's a fix!

Thanks for the suggestions. So far, the events viewer hasn't revealed much.
I'll keep plugging away and let you know what it finally turns out to be.
I hate problems. Especially my own.  ;D

I hear that Bob...

So nothing tells you what it could be in the title bar of the error message?  Or is it just a generic thing like, run-time error! or something like that.

There has to be something that points to the application that's causing it.  Until we figure that out, we're going blind on how to fix it.

Bob, maybe just a Windows 7 incompatible problem.
The solution will be found which is that application.
Maybe running ProcessExplorer and with the "target" icon (called "Find Windows' Process") drag it into the error message.

Do you by any chance use registry cleaners?
