Title: System Restore Side Effect
Post by: Chim on December 20, 2009, 05:00:23 PM
The Good News is that this past week, Windows System Restore saved me from having to reinstall my Windows XP.  The side effect is that the System Restore brought back 2 Opera versions I had uninstalled recently.  As it stands, I can't uninstall them, certainly NOT in the normal way.  One of the Operas no longer has the Uninstall Icon.  The other Opera has the Uninstall Icon, but it doesn't work.  Both of these Operas were installed with the Opera Classic Installer (The Wise Installer) thus, they're NOT really part of Windows and don't show up in the Control Panel.

I'm NOT concerned about the Opera Files.  I can delete those manually.  I know where all the Opera Files are ... in 3 Folders.  I'm concerned about the Registry Entries.

Question 1:  Can Revo Uninstaller and / or MyUninstaller properly remove the Registry Entries for those 2 Operas even if their Uninstall / UnWise Icon aren't there or don't work?

Question 2:  Something popped into my mind yesterday.  Let me know if this would work for getting rid of the Registry Entries.  Okay, the 2 Operas are named -- Opera Two and Opera Three.  What if I just installed 2 NEW Operas and named them -- Opera Two and Opera Three?  Would those 2 NEW Operas write / make their Registry Entries in the exact SAME location as the OLD Opera Two and Opera Three?  Would I then simply be able to uninstall those 2 NEW Operas and ALL traces of Old & New Registry Entries for "Opera Two" and "Opera Three" be gone?

CCleaner will allow you to get rid of the entries...you're in XP ok, if you were in Seven, you'd have this option from the native uninstall panel >>> prompt to remove an entry if program not found. So in the mean time: http://www.ccleaner.com/

a good thing to do after this would be to re-install Opera and uninstall it normally, then reinstall for good.

Just how easy to use is that CCleaner?  It's not something that one has to REALLY know what one is doing in the Registry, is it?  Or does it just have some easy GUI that in essence, you just tell it you want all Registry Entries for this Opera and that Opera GONE?

I hear that CCleaner clears out a lot of other useless junk.  There again ... will CCleaner pretty much tell you what is junk or does it work only on wiping out specifically what you tell it to?

You choose categories or check everything. Still a good idea to do a System Restore checkpoint first.

take a look at the interface, see for yourself, and don't click on anything unless you're sure what it's for. This said there is a special panel in ccleaner for installed programs where you can either really uninstall, or just remove an entry. There's also another panel for the registry, be more carefull there, you'll probably find in it anyway tens of opera entries that you can delete safely. Backup a registry entry before you delete it is possible.

Thanks, Logos, Corday, Kenny!
I bookmarked the CCleaner Documentation to get familiar with it.
Hmmm?  I tried to download CCleaner from that link and it seems to NOT be Free.j
I then went to SnapFiles and they have a CCleaner Slim over there.  I guess that's the one I'll be downloading.

Sooo, no one commented on my second question.  Would it be safe to say that thought of mine will NOT work?

what ??? it's completely free. Just uncheck the yahoo toolbar during the setup, and you're done.

YES, I told you already, reinstall and uninstall (it will be on the same locations, files and registry)

Oops!  Doh!  Sorry, Logos, I guess I didn't quite process / interpret that part correctly.
If the Registry Entries for the NEW (Same Name) Operas will be in the same locations, then that's what I prefer to do.  I'll go do that right now.  Cuz I'd really much rather NOT deal with the Registry, even if it is via CCleaner.

I'll still read up on CCleaner.  Who knows?  Maybe I'll experiment with it on my other computer.

Thanks, again, Logos!

Crap!  Trying the easy way didn't work.   ;D
I guess I'll have to roll up my sleeves ... put on my suit of armor and go into the Registry with CCleaner.  I'm off to go download CCleaner.

Alright ... I'm back.  I downloaded CCleaner.  I fired it up and unleashed it on my computer's Registry.

Verdict?  SUCCESS!  YES!  Woo Hoo!  ;D
The Registry Scan came back with 121 issues.
I cleared out several Opera ones.
I also cleared out several other obvious ones from AVG, Mozilla, GIMP, OpenOffice and others.  I believe I brought the issues down to just under 100.

I saved the Issues List so that I can study it more carefully.  I'm sure I can clear out some more.  For now I just wanted to clear out the super obvious ones and see if my computer would still function properly.  Everything's working OK.  I didn't screw up anything.

I had always heard / read about this CCleaner, but never knew how awesomely useful it was!  :)

Thanks for suggesting it ... and for nudging me into diving in and using it.

I don't remember if I saw on there ... how does one check for Updates for CCleaner?

good, so you're done with your issues now  ;) (for updates there's a link on the right hand bottom corner of the UI...no other way to check manually, this will open a link in your browser...otherwise there's an auto-check off and on when the program starts)

*edit*: again, if you're new to CCleaner, be careful with what you delete!

Thanks again for the CCleaner Updates Check Info, Logos ... Kenny!
Don't worry.  I'm NOT gonna go Registry Entry Gunslinger Trigger Happy.  ;D
Pretty much most of the remaining Registry Entry issues look too complex and hieroglyphics-like.  ;D
I won't be able to decipher most of those.  I might ask y'all about some of them, but otherwise, it's likely most of the remaining ones will stay.

Final tip. When deleting a program, use that feature in CCleaner rather than Microsoft's Add/Delete. It does a better job. Even then, some programs can only be totally deleted from their "creators" uninstaller or manually in the Register.
