Title: Just wondering if my security software has any conflicts I should know about
Post by: fisher84 on January 04, 2010, 01:18:17 PM
Hello everyone,

I'm a new user here and I'm building a new computer and this is what I have on my system (Windows 7):

*Avast! home AV (I disabled the network shield because it sounds redundant and I have the others on)
*Comodo Firewall with Defense+ enabled (no AV installed from this)
*Threatfire
*MalwareBytes Anti Malware scanner
*Iobit Security 360 with the active protection off (just use this as a backup scanner and for a few tools just in case as I'm sure the active protection would conflict with one of the above four; I might get rid of it in favor of a better on demand malware scanner)
*Firefox browser with pretty much all the essential security add ons

So my question is what type of conflicts is this setup going to have?  I've heard that Threatfire is a good compliment to Avast, but I'm wondering about how Comodo's Defense+ conflicts with Avast (if at all).  I'm going to post this up on Comodo's website as well because obviously not everyone here uses Comodo, but constructive insight from folks with more knowledge then myself would be appreciated.

Iobit is not a trustable company.
Defense+ and Treatfire could "fight" for detection. Besides, they could slow down the computer significantly.
But, technically speaking, not of them should conflict.
Also, avast and Comodo have problems between them in the past quite some times... I suggest other freeware firewalls.

I guess that's what I get by looking on cnet.  Got rid of it as soon as I saw your message.  Thanks for the headsup.

Like which ones?

<snip>

Whilst the other have dealt with the other points you raised, the Network Shield most certainly isn't redundant, aside from monitoring common attack ports (so provides back-up to your firewall another level of defence), but it also has a list of known malicious sites. This list is maintained during the normal VPS Updates so it is always up to date.

One of the sources of this information I believe is from the Web Shield detections, data on these detection is collated and one site is getting lots of detections, then it would be added to the list. So I feel that the network shield is another essential avast shield.

Alright, followed some more of the advice here.  Got rid of Comodo and put up the PC Tools plus firewall and enabled the Network Shield on Avast.  Added SpyWare Terminator for the real time protection and the handy little toolbar that comes with it.  Lots of good suggestions here.  Want to make sure the comp is safe for the kids (since they're not as responsible as I am), so now my protection looks like this:

*Avast home with all shields enabled
*PC Tools Firewall
*Spyware Terminator with real time protection (really debating whether to pony up for a-squared anti-malware)
*Threatfire
*Malware Bytes on demand scanner
*Virus total on demand scanner for questionable files

Anything else which would help or is this just overkill?

If I were going to pony up for anything I would suggest the MalwareBytes AntiMalware (MBAM) Full version (or SAS Pro) both are single one off payments and get rid of Spyware Terminator completely and not bother with a-squared.

If you purchase the MBAM Full version I would suggest SAS (Super AntiSpyware) free as an additional on-demand anti-spyware.
