Title: Windows 7 Ult 64 installation failure on VPS
Post by: infiniteken on January 07, 2010, 08:15:27 PM
Installing Avast free home on freshly built computer.

OS - Win7 Ultimate 64

Avast installer always crashes when it gets to the part where it accesses VPS. Doesn't matter if I choose full or minimal installation.

Seeing as how this is a brand new install over bare windows, I'm not sure if there's anything I can disable.

Any ideas?

Did you download the full setup file (not the on-line installer from CNET)?
Any other antivirus came installed in the computer?

Tried both.

Went a little further (lasted a few more seconds after hitting VPS portion of installation) and then teh Avast! has stopped working message pops up

No other antivirus, this computer is brand new self installed.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
6. Insert the license key.
7. Check and post the results.

v5 loaded fine.

Strange

If I find any reason to go back to v4, I shall definitely try the installation from scratch.

Thanks again for your help!

Still confused as to why v4 didn't work, though... known issues?
