Title: Virus Chest problem
Post by: JennyE on January 07, 2010, 10:00:33 PM
I just installed Avast antivirus and can´t get the chest to work. This is the message I get when I try to open the chest:

Program cannot use Chest client: (null)
--->Description: Virus chest server is not running. RPC communication failed.

Before I installed Avast I used McAfee Security Center, which I´ve removed.
Also, I don´t have the little blue symbol at the right bottom of my screen, is the program still running properly?

Have you run McAfee removal tool?
if not you will fend it here as Nr.19a  http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/  and restart

then try repair avast

For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select 'avast! Anti-Virus,' click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

This article provides the steps to remove SecurityCenter from your computer.

Also for direct download: http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/VSCleanupTool.exe
and http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe (2007)

Sometimes, McAfee won't be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its "Uninstall Application" if necessary (www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html).

After that, I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
6. Insert the license key.
7. Check and post the results.

I tried the whole uninstall process but the chest still wouldn´t work, and also avast didn´t seem to run properly since I didn´t get the a-ball. I found another topic with the exact same problem, with a recommendation of installing and running MBAM, which I did. Turned out my computer was infected with about 80 trojans!  :o After removing them avast is finally working!
