Because most of the servers are dead slow i've uploaded avast! 5.0 Free Antivirus to several hosting services to help users to download latest avast! as fast as possible.
Hope it helps

Not a bad idea...

guys, do as you like, but I'm not sure at all it's legit to upload Avast! on servers like that... without at least an agreement with the avast team. And that's also an open door to fake versions etc...

Hmmm...good point...are we allowed?

you should pm someone from the team may be...

It's on Softpedia and some of the other big sites.
I downloaded it about an hour ago and installed over .373, but having to get 38MB then the update uses only a few files (just like via Update between Betas) is a bit wasteful on a slow connection.

Why wouldn't we be? It's not like we take credit or make profit for that but Download.com is really slow like crap.
You can always verify digital signature which cannot be faked in any way.

look, many companies don't like it and don't want it, unless there is an agreement, it's just like that. And I'd be surprised if Avast's policy would be different. They also generally like that users, on personal web sites, put rather a link to the main web site than the file ;)

Are you sure?
We have a dedicated capacity on download.com servers.
I just tried to it here it runs at over 1 MB/s (ie. the whole setup file is downloaded in like 30 seconds).

Folks, download.com did a great infrastructure upgrade in December. Is why we are working with them. I just downloaded from them while here in Prague and the download took literally seconds.....Is best to not get it on lots of little individual servers. As someone pointed out, that is also source of confusion about scams, fake products, etc.
-
Fair enough, well, mine is removed anyway...
-
I was getting avast! from Download.com at whooping -1kB/s. With several pauses. It sucks like hell.
I don't understand why companies rely on their crap servers. SoftPedia is far faster, same for many others.
Or even torrents. They can be used for legit stuff as well and bandwidth is distributed and downloads are usually whooping fast.

takes less than 15 seconds here on download.com ;D
-
I guess Download.com GeoIP decides that Slovenia is located somewhere near Australia and gives a server from there to me. And end result is such crappy download. But oh well, i have it installed now and have provided few download mirrors for ppl who are as unfortunate as me.
-
No way in hell I would download off a mirror that somebody put up. I'll stick with download.com, downloaded Avast 5 before from there and had no issues.

same here, especially with an AV...or anything else btw ;)

All the installers are digitally signed so it's relatively easy to verify if they're genuine...
-
Will FileHippo.com get a copy?

Can't that be faked? I always thought it could but not easily. Don't want to throw the thread off topic just asking.

that's a very good thing (I mean it) but a majority of people won't check that...less of an issue on 64 bit systems where the driver sig is checked by Windows at setup time.

I think you're right, most people won't check.

I just tried to it here it runs at over 1 MB/s (ie. the whole setup file is downloaded in like 30 seconds).
It took me almost 2hrs 40mins to download the installation file 38.5MB, which is about normal for me on dial-up for something this size 1MB = about 4min.
-
mine would take about 40 minutes as the speed it show, normal download speed, it would be nice if FileHippo.com and fileforum.com upload a copy.
-
I downloaded the new release from Cnet and did not have any problem with the download.
But I like to get updates from File Hippo and Major Geeks.
-
Add me to the non-fans of download.com, I used it to get the v5 installer only because Alwil's own servers are obviously in very heavy use.
Took 14 minutes using FreeDownloadManager -- download.com permitted me to use my max. 10 sections, but top speed was only around 60 KB/s whereas I can get 300+ from most good servers. I think my ISP throttles me to around 25-30 KB/s per connection -- it would have taken me only twice as long to ignore FDM and use Firefox's built-in downloader (single conection).
And I don't know about these upgrades steckler mentioned ... seems like quite a few of us got poor download speeds. And it's nearly midnight (Eastern time) here, plus I'm not exactly out in the "boonies" (about 60 miles from Toronto), so I would have expected much better.
On top of which, at one time (they may have corrected this by now) download.com was notorious for badly out of date with regard to current versions of whatever.
-
I just downloaded nearly only 2mins in 1mbps speed. :)
If you guys complain about the download speed in Download.com
Upload it in torrent.
