Title: Avast raping Firefox
Post by: Avastfan1 on January 24, 2010, 02:02:53 AM
Hello Forum,

Why is Avast Free 5.0.377 causing Firefox to freeze after a while?

Any thoughts? Would be interested to hear from other people experiencing a similar problem.

Cheers,

Not for me it isn't, lucky I guess.

Though you don't give too many secrets away, like exactly when it happens, what you are doing at the time and importantly was it like this with firefox 3.5.7 before you updated to 3.6 ?

Thanks for the replies.

Just regular browsing of the web. Emails and ordinary web surfing.

Firefox has been freezing up after the installation of Avast 5.0.377 and the upgrade to Firefox 3.6.

My RAM useage has actually decreased and Avast seems lighter on resources. Which makes me wonder what the fuck is causing this? LOL

Would appreciate any thoughts, comments or suggestions!

I had the slow connection (or pages not loading fully, or at all) and I traced it back to the 3rd party firewall.

If you have one, remove any old avast entries and on reboot it should ask for new rules when avast runs. Online armor will stop the avastui loading even if you set it to trust/allow until next boot.

Maybe this helps, maybe not.

Start Firefox in Safe mode and disable all add ons and then see if the same problems exist. I yes, post here again and give additional info if any. However, crashing FF can have many reasons. Bad websites, bad add-ons, number of open tabs. I have the identical OS & FF 3.6, and  some 10 enabled add ons and no problem (so far). :-)

I hope this helps.

One other suggestion, with the firewall, is to clean out any application rules for avast services from 4.8 which no longer exist, there were several of them.  Comodo, back when I used that, had a "purge" button which would automatically run through the list of permissions and delete any lines for which the corresponding application or service was no longer onboard.

The PC Tools one that I now use requires you to remove them manually and individually -- but if you untick that "hide uninstalled" thing, it'll flag each of those with a red X.

I recently had the same problem. I don't think it's just Firefox or a Firewall entry or entries.
I had to go back to Avast 4.8 and now I have normal surfing again.

The Avast 5 upgrade may be the cause from what I have experienced. Seems some others may
have similar problems, too.

Im not really a pro but i have plenty of knowledge in terms of software.

I have the same issue with yours.

What i did?

I just remove MBAM Pro.

And now Avast 5 is fully working!

Before complaining about Avast 5.

Look at you protection software?

You have plenty of it.

PC Tools, MBAM, Dr Web Anti Virus... ETC......

Try uninstall all your protection software except Avast 5.

If it has uninstall utility better use it.

It think Avast 5 now has a incompatibility with other protection software.

This is just my opinion but it works for my two computer.

Hello All,

Firstly, many thanks to you all for the replies. I have read them all.

Unfortunately I am not very tech-savvy so I have neither the knowledge nor the stamina to work my way to try all these solutions.

I can say however that I really appreciate the comments. In addition, I can say that I am not complaining :-)

I really like Avast! and am a loyal user. Indeed, I recommend it to all my friends and to anybody who will listen to me!

A perusal of numerous recent threads on the forum suggests that this is not an isolated problem. Many other users are experiencing the same issues.

I hope this issue is solved ASAP as I really want to start enjoying the full features of Avast!

Thank you again,

Avastfan1

If your RAM figures in your signature (265MB) are correct you are operating on an absolute bare minimum and everything on your system will suffer for it.

Just a min!!!
u answered me some where els and u said:
(For XP 512MB RAM really isn't that much)
(So I would suggest you try to get another 512MB taking it to 1GB RAM)

who changed my profile!!!!!!!!!!
OMG how much Avast's team respects privacy!!!
Everything is CLEAR NOW!

Which is why I queried if your signature was correct and it appears it wasn't. The other advice to try and get another 512MB of RAN still stands.

Your profile, signature is on display for every post so no privacy as far as that is concerned and there is no wy they would have changed your profile information.

i know it's public but they broke my privacy when they changed it to 256MB!!!!
first i thought i made a mistake! then when i saw ur reply at the other place i knew that i wrote it 512MB and some one changed it for Fun!  ;)
cuz u first answered me as i have 512MB then u told me that i have 256MB! while i didn't change anything!
then i saw it 256MB and changed it back to 512MB!

Got it!

They didn't change anything, what purpose would that achieve, why would they single you out ?

My profile has never been changed other than by me in just under 6 years of using the forums.

I first answered you cuz it was marked in highlighted text (RED Background) in your post (not signature) that you had 512MB. I told you you had 256, because I noticed that was what was in your signature.
