Title: Avast detected Threat:Win32:Adware-gen [adw] ... false positive?
Post by: shellac on January 26, 2010, 03:58:21 PM
Hello,

I ran a full scan with avast 5 on my Acer Aspire 3680 laptop and it detected only one file:

C:\Program Files\Acer\Acer Arcade\Kernel\CLML_NTService\se\xmlparse.dll

Avast called it "Threat:Win32:Adware-gen [adw]"

The action "Move to Chest" received the error "Access is denied"

Avast said this virus was in memory or something.
It suggested a boot scan which I haven't done yet because I got to thinking...

If this is a false positive and it gets removed, could it damage my computer?
Is this a common false positive on Acer computers?
Should I just trust avast and remove it?
If this was a threat, why wouldn't malwarebytes and all the other adware programs have found this?

Anyway, thanks for your help.  I'm just skeptical of the detection and not sure what to do.
