Hi *,
we'll soon be releasing a program update for v5 (a first program update after the official launch). If you'd like, you can test the pre-release bits now. Anyone who has problems with the official build (5.0.377) - especially system-wide crashes or hangs - is welcome to do so. This build is also supposed to fix the "hang" issue of the previous pre-release build (.393) - we'd be very grateful if those who had this problem with the 393 build could verify that it's indeed fixed.
Download links:
links removed - there's a newer version available now.
(sorry, no incremental update for now - but running this full package on a computer with 5.0.377 already installed should allow you to do the update; alternatively, you can always reinstall).
Users of 5.0.393 can go to this build by simply invoking the Program update feature from within the avast UI.
This is a service release that is supposed to fix most of the issues reported for the 5.0.377 version. Most importatly, the intermittent BSODs should hopefully be gone.
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks much
Vlk

Hi
Is this with beta license? or paid license
-
This is a pre-release build.
-
This is a pre-release build.
Not sure what you mean.
Updated release or a beta
-
Vlk by pre-release you mean that the next build that is comming ? But like me i got 5.0.377 now so if that pre-release is good i will can update it from my program update of 5.0.377 without problem right ?
-
This is a pre-release build.
Not sure what you mean.
Updated release or a beta
"Beta" if you like. ;)
Something not yet released to the general public (even though it's coming soon).
If you don't have any issues with 377 I don't think you need to bother.

I unfortunately had to drop 377 beta license was over :-(. That's the reason why I asked

Vlk will i will be avaible to update it throught my 5.0.377 with no problem at all when the new build will come ?

Yes of course, but only after it's officially released (i.e. not version 394 but some later one).
-
Ok Vlk. That very a good idea. ;D
-
Hi, has anyone already tested this build? Any problems solved by it? Like BSODs or generic slowdowns of the system? Thanks. L.
-
It's working much better here than the previous builds. No freezes etc.
Thanks!!!
-
Submitting files using the chest is working again on my system :D
-
YES YES YES!!! It loaded and is running fine! This is the first version 5 build that would do so on this PC! (XP Pro SP3.) Thank you for working on this! (Running Avast Pro.)
-
Glad to hear that. Build 393 was actually supposed to be like this but we forgot to fix one little thing which is now fixed in 394.
If we get enough positive feedback on 394, we'll make a new release build probably tonight (Pacific time).
-
I still get the freeze at the end of install. My reset button's going to wear out at this rate! :-)
-
Hi Vlk I need automatically update from 377 to 394 :'( not manual uninstall
-
394 Yeh!! ;D ;D
All is right with the world again 8)
-
I still get the freeze at the end of install. My reset button's going to wear out at this rate! :-)
Explain us in a new thread your problem if possible to put screenshot and send them the mini dump on their ftp.
Edit : Coper 3.0.394 is pre-release its will be avaible for the 377 to go throught program update easly without problem.
-
Installing 394 over 393 got the database versions back in synch.
-
Dear Mr Agent, freeze makes screenshot impossible... System hangs at end of install. Can move mouse, drag the installer window (but it leaves trails). ctrl-alt-del brings up expected dialogue box, but task manager won't start. Alternatively, a shutdown and reboot (instead of task manager) hangs. Hard reset only way out. Been like this for me since build 5.0.314 or the previous beta, if I recall correctly. No other AV, uninstalled, rebooted, new Avast removal utility run, rebooted, and then installed, so all was clean.
Getting a bit tired of reporting this over and over with no resolution, to be honest.
-
I still get the freeze at the end of install. My reset button's going to wear out at this rate! :-)
Really? A complete freeze?
Is it really v394 that you were installing (you can verify by right-clicking the left-hand side banner of the setup wizard ;))
-
Well, a "freeze" as I described above, vlk, and definitely 5.0.394, as that's the version which comes up after a reboot.
Unusable OS, anyway, which is as good as a total freeze.
-
Hi!
I´m still using the .377. It´s running very smooth and hasn´t caused any problems on my pc.
Will the next final version (.394/5/6 etc.) be delivered via Auto-update when it´s official released?
Thanks in advance.
-
Yes Ricard 377 will be avaible to upgrade throught program to 394 with no problem.
-
YES!
Installed on top of 393 - restarted, and everything runs ok.
Added the BS in Add/Remove Programs and restarted again.
Now everything works as it should :)
Updated my other 3 PC's as well, and everything is fine.
Thank you!!!
PC1 Windows XP pro SP3
PC2 Windows XP Pro SP3
PC3 Windows Vista Premium Home
PC4 Windows 7 x32
-
Wow i almost jumped Oisntein you look really so glad about that fix im very happy that all is happy now. Excepted ALWIL will try to figure Phil problem :D
-
PhilR,
I'm afraid the only reliable way to understand the problem on your system is to go through the full dump creation process (as described here: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71)
By analysing the dump, we'd see where the system is hung and make some conclusions... otherwise, it's really just guessing. ::)
-
Vlk maybe he should make a hijackthis log also with his avast! setup log ?
-
Happy to report that upon installation of .394 my system no longer freezes upon restart. OS: Windows XP Pro SP3. Thanks a bunch!
PS: I should mention I did an upgrade over .377 again not a clean install, worked flawlessly!
-
This is great!! No problems so far! and i can install 5 pro!! I need to wait for the final setup so i can upgrade from 4.8 to 5. Thankz alwill!
-
So Far Working Good on my Vista Desktop--Had one Freeze on XP SP3 Machine...Will report back if any more issues with this program, otherwise working good and fast
-
If you got a mini dump for the freeze that you had please upload on their ftp server so they can watch what wrong on it.
-
Launched the 'update programme' function manually from 5.0.393. It seemed to update ok but froze on step 3/3 and displayed 'web shield'.
Couldn't move the mouse and no other programme was responsive.
Hard reset was the only option. Rebooted successfully and Avast is displaying 5.0.394 as the installed version.
Launched the 'update programme' function manually and it says it is already up to date.
How can I be sure these builds are installing properly (and are installed properly) if each install process freezes?
I have yet to experience BSODs, however I really fear this will appear at some stage. This has been a common occurrence for many users.
Let's get this sorted Alwil! I appreciate you must be working your arses off - so keep up the hard work lads!
-
I can see if i can find the Minidump on that XP SP3 PC, and then if i find it, i'll upload it immediately, it was doing a virus scan, and froze so solid, couldn't even wake it from Screensaver mode
-
Avastfan1, the freeze was a typical thing for build 393 (should not happen with 394 though).
To be sure, I would recommend installing 394 from scratch.
-
Vlk maybe he should make a hijackthis log also with his avast! setup log ?
I did post a setup log when the problem occurred during beta testing in another thread - there seemed to be nothing untoward in there.
-
I can see if i can find the Minidump on that XP SP3 PC, and then if i find it, i'll upload it immediately, it was doing a virus scan, and froze so solid, couldn't even wake it from Screensaver mode
There's no minidump for freezing...
Anyway, could you at least move the mouse pointer when the freeze occured?
-
VLK:
Is the update freeze problem fixed yet?
-
Couldn't Move Mouse, Nor Did Control Alt Delete work at all, ended up pressing restart on the tower
Both on my Vista PC and This one XP SP3 Machine was clean installs to This Version..377 on other Household PC's, but not updating those yet due to no issues experience on that one, just wanted lastest version on Vista PC, since just switched from MSE for Good, Removed MSE thru Add/Remove Programs, and used CCcleaner as well
Vista PC is running fine so far
Trying another Full scan on XP SP3 Machine
-
I would be more than happy to send Alwil a dump (LOL), however I don't have the experience to follow those instructions you posted and muck around with my registry settings.
-
Question: How secure are our systems while the beta-versions are loaded? :O
-
bikemanAMD, can you please check the size and date of the file C:\windows\system32\drivers\aswSP.sys for me?
Thanks
Vlk
-
Hi , I just did a install of 5.0.394 on a new snapshot of my xp home. No other security except fortinet fw.
I was able to see my browser's web pages until I installed avast. ???
Things seem to be working fine otherwise. :)
-
on XP SP3 Machine aswsp.sys File version is 5.0.374.0, Date is 1/27/2010 4:14P.M., size 160kbs
Gonna Use the Avast 5 Removal Tool on the XP SP3 Machine, it froze again lol, but i'll give that a shot and do a clean install and report back if issue continues

Ensure that Fortinet FW allows AvastSvc.exe internet connection.
If it does delete the entry and connect to the internet again that should force it to ask permission again.
The AvastSvc.exe is used for three services see image.

Build 394 solves continual reboot from XP Pro Welcome screen with aksfridge.sys. It does however find hardlock.sys, also part of the Aladdin Hasp SRM software (as is aksfridge.sys), suspicious via heuristic scanning.
Cheers,

Thanks for the confirmation.

Correct. It will be solved in one of the next VPS updates (doesn't require a program update).

I had to uninstal completly avast 5 because my computer was completly freezing on startup. Even disabling (is that a word?) the shields didn't work. I had to go to safe mode to uninstal everything.
Windows Vista, 32 b., Avst 5.0.394.
BTW, congrats Vlk for 10 000 posts :)

Looks Like Clean Install Solved issue on Desktop XP SP3, 70 Percent thru a Full scan, and No Freeze Up yet..
Working Well, WIll run a Full Scan on this Vista one later on tonight when i got a chance
Keep up the Good work Avast Team

Completely freezing with a clean install of v5.0.394?? Are you sure? As in: not even mouse cursor moved?
I'm double-checking as pretty much everyone so far confirmed that build 394 did solved these kind of issues...
Thanks

Aubsurmer, next time you try to install it please verify that it's indeed build 394 by right-clicking the left-hand side banner in the avast setup wizard - it should tell you which version it is going to install, exactly.
-
I hav win xp sp3 with 4.8 professional edition..to maintain my license i downloaded n installed avast 5 pro from
http://www.avast.com/lp-upgrade-4-5-paid
after installation, restarted, only wallpaper appears,no taskbar, task manager shows AvastSvc.exe as 'startup pending'
i started explorer.exe using task manager but nothing happened.after restart, even task manager is inaccessible
finally i restored system using safemode using restore point.
THIS HAPPENED FOR ALL PEOPLE UPGRADING FROM 4.8 PRO TO 5 PRO DOWNLOADED FROM ABOVE SITE USING WINDOWS XP
has this been fixed specifically in this version??

This is what i have now installed (this is what is written in the maintenance tab). So far no problem, but last time i didn'T have any problem before 3-4 restarting of my computer.
But right now its good :)

Things are Well Here Now--Vista PC Working Great, Desktop 2 Freezing problem is Resolved--Working Great
-
platform : Windows XP SP3
I was running .377 without having noticed any issue (just got the hardlock.sys warning).
I decided to bump it up to .394. The upgrade process was straight forward.
Everything looked good until I got the hardlock.sys warning again. (just went to select ignore - as you guys will fixed that in a new signature db release)
The warning bring up the Real time shield window and what I am noticing now is that the mouse is freezing every time the graph is being refreshed.
It happens with any of the Real time shields graphs. CPU/memory usage is normal.
Just wanted to mention it. ;)
-
See this earlier post, this is confirmed and will be fixed in a VPS Update.

Vlk, I uninstalled the release version and downloaded this pre release as you asked in my other thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54345.0.
I can't install it! The installer crashes when I try to change the installation path. I am installing it on a virtual machine running Vista Ultimate on Microsoft VPC 2007. There are no service packs on this Vista (partly because I had made the original virtual hard drive not large enough when I created the machine in May 2008 and there is very little space left on the (C) drive). I recently added a second virtual drive and I was trying to install Avast on that drive (E) instead of on (C) where it wants to install.

That error is because of missing shlwapi.dll, not because of avast! your virtual machine is missing that dll, so download it and then try to install avast 5 again. I should work. Just google for that dll. You will find it quick.
Vlk, when is it going to be released the upgradable setup for 4.8 to 5?
-
Another freeze.
Uninstalled 4.8, rebooted. Deleted all avast entries in OA firewall. Ran aswclear.exe, rebooted.
Installed 5.0.394, hang, then totla freeze on 'finishing setup'.
Tried to set regedit to create a crash dump, but there is no 'Parameters' key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\
-
I had no problems with 5.0.377
I had update problems with 5.0.393
Now that I have invoked from 5.0.393 the 5.0.393 refresh, everything went back to normal in my computer.
Everything is working fine with me... rm
-
Sorry! I mean now with 5.0.394 everything is back to normal in my pc
-
Vik does this address the Powerdvd conflict at all?
-
no problems with 377 so i will wait for finished product of version 394
-
The firewall rules creation problem is still there: avast is not able to remember my choice for webshots.scr and keeps asking if I want to allow it. It is really annoying. :(
-
HAHA
You know I almost wish I had XP on my netbook still...mainly since it was locking up constantly. Windows 7 seems much better with Avast 5 for some reason.
Though XP would be nice again due to the fact my sound and video studders when playing youtube vids or playing from songbird when doing anything just about. CPU spikes on my poor netbook and it can't keep up. Used to play just fine with XP :/
Anyway I'm loading up 394 anyway to see what all improvements it might bring.
-
It's interesting that it works fine on some netbook configurations and doesn't on others. Especially since hardware configuration is nearly the same on all of them. This config is the most dominant one: Atom N270, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 945GS chipset, GMA950 graphics and usually 160GB HDD.
I don't have any problems on 3 different systems running all 3 major operating systems, XP, Vista and Win7. No problems at all. But i hope this update will solve the problem for users that do have problems so it will restore the "faith" in avast!.

Vlk,
Or any other on the dev staff. Im sorry if this is duplicating information you already readof mine but it was VERY taxing to trace it down. Once I narrowed it to the program Im all better. Anyhow, I went to re-install my enitre OS(Vista x64) from scratch. Once I had the OS installed, I loaded all my MoBo drivers then installed Avast. It was at this point I would start receiving error messages about my copy of Windows being invalid...even after Activation. When I finally got the error message to give me the right details it was "An unauthorized change was made to your license", and at that point my only options were to uninstall or contact MS.
Knowing that my ORIGINAL vista x64 system builders disk is mine and always has been and I have always used my COA Product Key made this experience very tiring, as it took me three wipe/installs to figure out Avast was changing my license. I had not updated yet, as that was the purpose of installing protection before connscting to the internet. blah, blah, blah de blah.
Long story short, unless I had a 'bad'? copy Avast is changing the windows Vista license pre service pack build. I would like to update my system WHILE protected. not connect and update THEN think about security. Thanks for a great application though, even though you still using Flash, Im sure some clever 13 year old will take advantyage of it soon...their the clever ones ya know.
EDIT: This is concerning the current release 377, I am going to load 394 right now but Iv updated my Vista since and I have things I need my system for tomorrow.
-

I'm not sure to be honest. I had issues with XP locking up with Avast 5. Windows 7 fine .... same system. I had minor issue with 7 the firewall but that was fixed.
I think the Windows 7 is messing with the audio... it was being slow until I turned off the power saving for the graphics and picked up in speed. Also tried same for audio and going back to windows drivers... it still has issues it is minor and probably be resolved soon.

It turned out that all I needed to do was reboot Vista. I had simply tried several times with no success but I didn't reboot. I should know after having computer since 1999 that rebooting can do wonders at times and should always be tried. Anyhow, it installed just fine after rebooting to my (E) drive BUT, sadly, there is NO improvement with the problem I have with Avast 5.
I will respond, I guess, in my other thread to Vlk as he told me there what he needs if I still have the problem.
-
Had to uninstall 394 and go back with my 377, proving it was not a bad copy along the way.
BTW...394 upon reboot had tray icon with "!" saying my system was not secure. Open GUI. Real Time Shield not turned on, next the FW detected my network asked for profile, selected High Risk, IMMEADITLY had pop up from windows alerting me that Avast FW had stopped functioning. Took a screenshot but forgot to 'paint' it before I unistalled 394...sorry.
I am back on 377 with no problems.
EDIT: Running Internet Security
-
a small issue:
5.0.394
the statistics zone always stays at "file system shield" & "Last week".
no matter how i change, it will come back when open the interface.

Tried to set regedit to create a crash dump, but there is no 'Parameters' key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\
Are you using a USB keyboard?
If yes, I'm afraid we're out of luck on WinXP (it's not possible to generate the dump that way). PS/2 keyboard is needed...
-
installed 5.0.394 but got lag when browsing windows explorer...
-
Just got a random freeze when the auto update function activated itself.
Am using Avast 5.0.394.
Hope this is fixed soon............
-
I used 5.0.377 now.so if that pre-release is good i will can update it from my program update of 5.0.377 to .394 without any problem right ?
-
With 394 I get the same problem: BSOD after log-on UNLESS I check to load Avast after other services.
BSOD, as before, happened at "restoring network connections" stage of logon.
I am using XP SP3 and wireless g.

Clean uninstall then tried to install 394 and system hungs at Finishing Setup. Manualy rebooted and upon startup see the Avast icon in system tray....system hung. Manual reboot and started fine with no Avast running.
394 no better than previous.

camphill, I also get the freeze on install, but it is all OK after a reboot.
See this thread: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=54495.0
One of the responses there leads to a post on how to get a memory dump after a freeze. Maybe you could do that and submit it to Alwil.
-
Unfourtunately the system is hung upon reboot. I can't do anything but move the mouse. The sys tray is hung, the task bar is hung, the desktop is hung. All I could do is hard boot. After the hard boot the Avast icon no longer appeared in the systrray but I do still see it loaded in memory. Maybe I'll go through the entire process AGAIN and try to get logs.
-
Installed 394 5 hours ago, and been using the PC constantly since then and so far had no issues or BSOD that I had with previous versions.
-
For the most part, since installing build 394, my Avast Pro XP Pro SP3 PC is fine. I did experience a freeze-up approx 1 to 2 minutes after the first boot today that I believe was related to the auto update process?? A second boot has proven to be fine. So, while I think 394 is basically ok, there is still something not quite right... :(
**EDIT**
BTW... When the PC froze, it had apparently updated to the latest definition 100128-0 but I never received any notification (pop-up or voice.)
-
No problems till now with my windows XP, i'm testing this version and will report any bugs if i meet ...
Hi, has anyone already tested this build? Any problems solved by it? Like BSODs or generic slowdowns of the system? Thanks. L.
-
No Problems Til Now with This Version, 5.0.394, when all shields stopped, but was successfully restarted with Fix Now Button, No Freeze Ups, First Scan of Laptop--Worked well(No Freeze ups), Freeze Ups on Second Desktop PC running XP SP3--Solved... Vista PC Running Great, No Problems with that one, but will report any if they come up.
Otherwise Build is stable and working well

Have you read this topic as .394 addresses that very problem as many are reporting it has worked for them.

It certainly hasn't worked for me. Freezes on Install, randomly on boot or when left running, and when uninstalling.

vlk says he's found the cause for the install freeze I was experiencing (based on the memory.dmp I sent him), so it should be fixed in the next update.
On my PC, the last phase of uninstall takes longer than I'd have expected, but it does finish and prompt for a reboot.
So far, no bluescreens or other misbehaviours here while the product's running.

Vlk..I have this version of avast! installed on three different systems. I'm monitoring all of them at this juncture. Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista and Windows 7. I don't want to speak too soon 7-), no problems so far.

so far so good... running whole day without any crashes... with the official release 5.377 I had 5 BSODs during one day on Win7 32, so for me the BSODs have stopped in 5.394 version.

Hello- I was able to install and use the new Avast 5 for about a day before it started to lock up. It would not update to current version although it seemed to be logging on to the server when I would do a manual update. It would say it downloaded 2 files but the file size would always be 0.0 kb. I had to roll back to ver. 4.8 and now everything is back to normal.

I have the same problem. 5.0 even not retrieving the updates.

Yikes! Wish I'd seen this sooner. I bought the 3 license set of Avast IS today (trying to get my bosses' computer cleaned up) from the main website and ended up with ver. 377. Downloaded his to a Windows XP SP3 computer. It installed ok, but hangs up during the scan. Installed on my identical computer and got the total lock up. Clicked on the link from this thread for the .394, but that wouldn't install. Managed to uninstall on my bosses' computer... had to boot my in safe mode to get it off of my computer. Now reading, I'm not sure I should even try to download 394 yet. I can't have my bosses' computer screwed up when he gets back in the morning. Ah, but the question. Will the licenses still be good if I wait a day or two for you guys to get this latest version working better? Just paid $59.95 and can't use what I paid for. No offense at all... I've used free versions for years and love what you guys do. I just want to get a good working version of IS installed and don't have time for a bunch more uninstalling, so I will wait. Again, though, license email says its only good for 3 days! ???

That's interesting! I have PCTFW 6.0.0.88 and I haven't experienced a freeze after reboot.

I installed the new software version hoping it would cure my shut down problem and thought it had eliminated the problem, but later today shut down again and once again my computer just hung on the shutdown screen.
Using Windows 7 Pro on a brand new notebook.

Iangho, can you please upload the recent minidump files from C:\Windows\Minidump folder to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming
Thanks.
Had same problem with .396.
Iangho.dmp is after install, update virus database and then reboot.
Iangho1.dmp is after booting in safe-mode I checked Settings/Troubleshooting/Load Avast...
To get Avast working I had to uninstall in safe-mode. Reboot, install and check Settings/Troubleshooting/Load Avast... before rebooting.

Where is th elink for .396?
It is now available as a public release. You should be able to download it from cnet when they update their site to include ver. .396 instead of .377.
Hope to have been of service ;)

Just got the automatic update notification for
396. Updated from 377. So far, so good.
Fingers crossed.

@vacant
A search of the forum would have yielded far quicker results...
It is not currently available for 64 bit systems, but is being worked on. It has been suggested that it may be available in 5.1, but this could change...
What you would find if you search... I am currently using AVAST 4.8 - just wondering whether the notification of the new Avast 5 would be available via automatic update on 4.8?
-
Worked fine for me, (Windows XP Sp-3)
I created a System Restore Point
I closed out of all Windows and diabled all protection shields before starting the download process. When prompted for a reboot I answered "no" and decided to reboot manually. Works great!
