Title: NEW PRE-RELEASE version of avast now available for test [5.0.396]
Post by: Vlk on January 29, 2010, 12:53:22 AM
Version 5.0.396 has now been released to the general public.
It will solve most of the stability issues related to version 5.0.377.

Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi *,

we'll soon be releasing a program update for v5 (a first program update after the official launch). If you'd like, you can test the pre-release bits now. Anyone who has problems with the official build (5.0.377) - especially system-wide crashes or hangs - is welcome to do so. This build is also supposed to fix the "hang" issue of the previous pre-release builds (393/394) .

Download links:
links removed

(sorry, no incremental update for now - but running this full package on a computer with 5.0.377 already installed should allow you to do the update; alternatively, you can always reinstall).

Users of 5.0.393/394 can go to this build by simply invoking the Program update feature from within the avast UI.

This is a service release that is supposed to fix most of the issues reported for the 5.0.377 version. Most importatly, the intermittent BSODs should hopefully be gone.

Any comments are welcome.

Thanks much
Vlk

Thank you.

Installed 5.0.396 by manually invoking the 'update programme' function.

Completed flawlessly. For the first time I actually received the box 'Avast needs to restart you system'.

Despite this, I would really like to send Alwil a dump! LOL

However, I will have to wait for a random freeze before I can.

Gian, it seems that manual updates work OK, since you can get the latest .396 version.  Did your computer come with some other security software installed (Norton is the most common) before you went to Avast! 4.8?   Does Task Manager show anything out of the ordinary, like Live Update?  Have you done a recent virus scan?

The incompatibility with MBAM real-time doesn't seem to be completely solved, sorry.

I somehow doubt this will happen as there is no way anyone can give that kind of assurance, the number of OS and software permutations is simply enormous.

Hi Vik

I am trying to download the file above, but its running at like 4k/s...is there anywhere else I can get it...the download keeps dropping out.

Background - I am running an Acer 6920G, 4Gb RAM, Vista Home Premium (SP2), 32 bit OS, and after installing the earlier Avast! version 5 (from the main web site) on restart I got the BSOD, and eventually had to uninstall it. I then re-installed and it went OK, but then eventually got a BSOD again... then I saw your post regarding the newest pre-release, so I was trying to download it.

Kind Regards,
Greer

Ian, I too have Dial Up.  You should try doing what I do when I need to download any Applications with a HUGE File Size.  I go to a friend's place who has High Speed Internet.  I download the Apps there and burn them onto a CD.  Then I just take the CD and save the Apps onto my computer.  Then the Setup and Install is FAST.  You can of course also save the Apps onto a Flash Drive instead of onto a CD.

Hi there,

Just wanted to give you a little feedback regarding this test:

OS
Windows XP Pro SP3
Internet Explorer v8
Other security apps:
Comodo Firewall latest version without antivirus
Malawerbytes latest version

I've been using Avast Pro now for 4 years; no problems really, except for the FP's issue at the end of 2009. I was lucky there.
I guess like most Avast customers I anxiously awaited the release of the new version 5.0; when it finally arrived I was amongst those that wanted to rush to upgrade.
I've been fooling around with computer software you see, ever since Commodore 64, so I think I know a thing or two....maybe.
Therefore, before upgrading my Avast Pro v4.8.1368 to Pro AV v 5.0.377 read all I could about the pros and cons. Found a lot of complaints and decided to wait.

"And on the third day..." (Just joking); today I decided, to hell with it...:

Completely uninstalled v4.8 with the Avast removal tool as per instructions and even so, used windows search and regedit to remove any leftovers.
Made a clean Install v5.0.377 but it hung just before finishing and then my computer froze, managed to reboot without shutting down completely and, surprise! found Avast installed and working as it should. Going through the shields just checking the "expert setting" in "system file shield" particularly "actions" which I changed to "ask" as first option, my PC froze again.
Rebooted as before. Everything OK.

Spent most of the day using my PC (work and play) and suddenly a bloody great BSOD.
Rebooted, disabled all shields, went to Avast forums "New Pre-Release version...test (5.0.396) downloaded from link posted by Vik, installed over v5.0.377; everything went perfectly: Install didn't hang, PC never froze, restarted when asked.
I've now been using my computer for over 4 hours and nothing has happened, no hangings, no freezes and above all no BSOD's. Ran different scan options including boot scan, fiddled about with "Process Virtualization" changed a couple of things in "real-time shields" and "settings"; in other words went through the GUI back to front, nothing unusual.

As you may have notice, I have Malawarebyte's installed, and with real-time protection enabled, and I find no apparent conflict whatsoever.

In any case, time will showup any issues if any.

Cheers

Anyways in view of Alwil assertions that a lot of faults have now been fixed via .393 .394 and .396, I've opted to upgrade to .396 from .377 and re-enabled behavior shield. My problem was a blue screen when streaming videos in IE8 which I cured by disabling behavior shield. I'll report back in a few hours. :)

This build is unusable on my Windows 7 Ultimate RC. It has a very similar problem to the problem I have with it on Vista Ultimate. I cannot use Avast 5 on either computer in any build.

I have not had Avast 5 on Win 7 until now as I have been beta testing Avira 10 on it but I am very unhappy with the latest beta we got today and I uninstalled it. I have been wanting to see if Avast had the same problem that it has on Vista on a virtual machine so this seemed a good opportunity. On Vista (virtual machine on Microsoft VPC 2007), Avast runs fine until I either open Fx or Opera download tabs to see the list or decide to download something. Then it uses 100% CPU and locks the computer totally and I can't even reset the computer from the Console on the host. It makes Avast unusuable. Earlier betas had the problem but not nearly as severe as in the release version and these Pre-release builds.

On Win 7 (also a virtual machine on VirtualBox),  the installation went fine.  I configured Avast and I then started Opera 1010 and then went to Opera download page. Avast did not use 100% CPU or lock the computer. Great! Then I went to my Downloaded Programs folder with the intention of seeing how Avast reacted to a file there that Avira says is a trojan.  I no more than got that folder open when Avast popped up and said that the new Avira beta released earlier today to us testers is a trojan! I tried to get a screen capture and could not (why can't Avast pop ups be captured)?.  I told Avast to block and then I hit the button to send the file to Avast. I don't know if it sent or not because almost immediately Avast began using 100% CPU and locked the computer so tight that I could not bring up Task Manager from the systray, could not shrink the virtual window to get to the host controls and VirtualBox controls. I ended up with a BSOD that Microsoft thought was caused by a mismatch between the BIOS for virtualbox and my CPU. The actual cause was that I couldn't do anything to gracefully shut down or reset Windows 7 as Avast had it totally frozen and had locked the CPU at 100% and never let up at all.  So, I had to eventually force a shutdown that caused a BSOD.

I booted the machine again and Avast worked fine until I went to my Downloaded Programs folder where I did a right click scan of the Avira file it had alerted on earlier and it said the file was clean but that was the on demand scanner. The real time scanner had alerted initially. The moment the on demand scan of that file was finished Avast AGAIN locked the CPU at 100% and locked the computer.  This is exactly what happens on Vista except there it happens when I access Fx or Opera download tab or try to download something. Slightly different this time though in that Avast let up on it grip on the CPU a tiny bit and I was able to bring up Task Manager and kill the avastsvc.exe process so I avoided another BSOD.

I'm beginning to wonder if the problem could have anything to do with Avast not running nearly as light as Avira and thus hogging the CPU at 100% because I have only been able to give Vista and Win 7 1GB RAM each (cannot run them both at the same time either) as I only have 2GB on the host and cannot add any unless I run XP Pro 64 bit which I don't own.  I have Avast (as I would with any AV) set to scan all files so I'm wondering if Avast is too heavy for these machines unless I change the scan options?  Probably has nothing to do with it as I noticed the problem on earlier beta builds on Vista (didn't have it on Win 7) but it was not severe. It used 100% CPU scanning the download tab in Fx whenever I opened the Download Manager but it let up in a bit and never locked the computer solid until the release version.

I have no other antimalware programs on either Vista or Win 7 and Windows Defender is disable on both.

Mele, I'm getting somewhat lost. We're moving in circles here.

Do I understand it correctly that the problem only starts happening when avast encounters the Avira file (which it considers a Trojan)? I.e. before that, everything is just fine?

Now, the CPU load may be related to avast moving the Avira file to the Virus Chest. How big is the Avira file?

Hi VLK,
just a heads up.
download.com is still offering the 377 version. Knowing the problems that version had, you should push download.com to act somewhat faster to offer the newest public release,  for your own sake. The more users download that problematic version, the more users will be disappointed by the product and possibly switch to another.

Greets,
tsm

Really? How odd! I downloaded the file to check on the .exe detail and noted .377 not .396. At any event download.cnet.com should be kicked by Alwil to get the .396 version available quickly, as lots of others are not as fly as forum posters to check on the version detail .

The problem is now everywhere. I went to full screen view and then right clicked on the desktop and chose "Personalize" so I could fix the icon size in the systray as for some reason they get huge anytime I go to full screen view. I use classic style (no Aero) so I needed to get into the Menu and change the size of Caption Buttons. I have to do this anytime I make Windows 7 full screen. Avast took forever to scan the files...at 100% CPU usage. I am sitting there for two minutes because Win 7 can't give me Windows Colors to click on to get to that menu! All because Avast hogs the CPU constantly and is the slowest AV I have ever used!

Avast should not hog the CPU and should not be so extremely slow. It cripples both Vista and Win 7. Damn shame as I really like Avast but it doesn't like my computers.  I disabled the behavioral shield and that made no difference. It's the real time scanner that is the problem.  Maybe if I don't have it set to scan all files but use the smart extensions that would help, but rather than do that I would prefer to find an AV that is not so heavy.  These days that means Avira only I guess and Avira 10 has a major change I will not accept.

It is not my only having 1GB RAM for this computer. I have plenty of unused RAM. It is the very frequent hogging of the CPU at 100% by Avast that is the problem.

Of course, now it means I have to find another anti-malware prog.

You have one: avast!

But unproven; all it has is a 'behaviour shield' with no settings. If it can't detect, say, rogue anti-virus software (and remove it) it's not a replacement, it's a supplement.

Online armor with it's HIPS feature is more useful

Well much like anything else if it works good for you fine BUT unfortunately not everybody has the exact same computer and programs.
I have used it enough on several machines to realize that it needs some tuning.

Once again; total freeze up of system at 'finishing setup'.
Uninstalled 4.8, rebooted, installed 5.0.396... freezes.
Same thing here!

May I ask if you have Malwarebytes installed and active?
Yes, of course.

The MBAM problem only exists if it's running real time. I finally deselected "start with windows" and am using it as my on demand AS. That's $20 wasted. I reinstated SuperAntispyware as my real time AS and all is well.

Hi Francois, You may be right that Avast! has something new in it that is the problem. The fix unfortunately is to retreat MBAM back to it's free status in order to correct the problem, at least until the Avast! folks and the MBAM folks get together and sort out the conflict.

Avast 5.0.396 pre-release version on WinXP Pro SP3.

I realize that the release version is now available.  However, when I try to manually update the VPS thru  the interface, it states that "Package is broken".  On the possibility that something had changed in the release version, I logged in as an administrator and tried a manual update to the release version.  That update attempt also got the same error message.  I then went to Add/Remove Programs and did the Repair routine and restarted Windows.

On restart and logging into the administrator account, still no luck.  Current VPS is 100129-0 and Avast seems to be working well, but any attempt to update is futile.  Yesterday, when checking manually for VPS updates, if VPS was current it would state that, not an error message.

Question 1: Will Avast 5.0.396 pre-release be able to update to the release version manually, or require a complete uninstall and then install the release version?

Question 2:  Is anyone else seeing the error message when attempting a manual update?

Should have said that is Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.396 pre-release.

I am encountering an updating problem. I am running Avast Internet Security and have just upgraded to version 5.0.396. I tried doing a network update check and received the following message: The package is broken

I then downloaded the virus data base installer (from Avast site) and encountered an error when trying to install it as well. Is this just a coincidence (server is having problems) or is it related to v5.0.396?

Tried to upgrade from 5.0.377 to this new one 396 but at end of the process before asking to restart a BSOE happen.
Restarting seems the 396 is running but  is not good. Returning to 5.0.377 via a restore system but now I am not able to update again ( the screen opens but stays on step 1 without running more). I wish to do a clean install removing all and install 396 from a file. Where can I download the 5.0.396 file ?

No success on upgrading 4.8 to 5.0, here is my setup log. I have been connected to internet in the entire process, and is the same for me since v5.0.377. I can't upgrade 4.8 to 5.0.

Why is this happening? I have no firewall, no other av or security software, but MSE and deactivated.

Should have said that is Avast Free Antivirus 5.0.396 pre-release.

The manual update no longer states that "Package is broken" for program nor VPS updates.  It downloaded the various files associated with updates(as seen in the interface) on the manual check.  I think there must have been a server problem.  VPS is now 100129-1 so it did update.

OTOH, it stated that the program is up to date, even though there were several files downloaded (analyzed??) during the manual program update check.  Does that mean that I am on the General official release, or am I using the pre-release version?  Are they the same, with identical files?

Other than the update glitches with .396 pre-release, I am seeing no other problems.

Updated manually from .377 UI to .396, and it did an automatic update virus definitions 100129-1 without any problems with CIS (Comodo).

Even F/P for CTRegSVR.exe is gone.
My report logs also started to report.
Still, the yellow triangle on Avast icon in systray for a couple of seconds, keeps me waiting for the worst. It is a relief when the icon spins 8)

Thank you Avast.

Updated just fine (from within the program) from 377 to 396, no problems (so far).

I don't remember seeing an update-available popup for this one.  I first learned of it via what seems to be a new feature I never noticed before (maybe added in one of the most recent engine/defs updates?), a "new version available" notice on the status screen.  That's a handy and (I think) unpublicized addition, thanks.

I think the official release is the same as the .396 beta,  I updated to the official release from .377 on one computer; the other has the .396 beta and the updater says I have the latest version.  Standard practice is to change the version number if you have some differences.

In your sig it says "MBAM 1.44 (resident protection module enabled)".

That's a known oft-reported conflict and I'm sure Vlk and co are working on it.

The old maxim of never running two resident antimalware programs at the same time has a lot of merit :)

Vista Home Basic, updated from .377 to .396 using program interface, all went smoothly. Proxy Settings now stay put when changed, but if I set Update Parameters to "I only connect to the internet using a dial up modem" it still won't auto update. But when turned off it updates just fine, so nothing crucial.

Ditto.  Win7 HomePrem 64bit here and Comodo FW D+ enabled.  I, too saw an update was available on the GUI and let it do the update.  But program update to 5.0.396 completed without a glitch and AV5 is running like a kitten purring.  Did a Quick Scan and Full Scan to test her and absolutely no probs.  But then I didn't really have any probs with my original Avast 5 Free clean install in safe mode.

@ Cazozo.......you said "I have no firewall, no other av or security software, but MSE and deactivated."

I used MSE for a few months and don't recall ever seeing a place inside the GUI for "deactivating".  So I totally uninstalled that software via Add/Remove in Control Panel.  Maybe there is some little piece of MSE still in the registry or at least still "visible" to the Avast installer/updater that is blocking a clean install/update of Avast5.  Why don't you try totally uninstalling MSE from your system and reinstall to see if that resolves any of your issues?  Worth a try. After uninstalling MSE, uninstall your Avast 5, Run the aswClear.exe for Avast5 (in safe mode), reboot and then do a clean install of Avast5.  MSE just might be a factor in your situation.

This is weird, because at work, i have also tried 4.8 to upgrade to 5, and no success neither. And all machines there have win 7 ultimate, in both 32 and 64 bits, and is the same result in all of them, see my other post with the setup log. Is the same issue in all of the machines. Now i'm at home, and my signature, has my home system specifications.

No, you can install other languages, in the maintenance section of UI, you just need to click install, select the language, it will download and install itself, then you just need to select it and it's all. But for installer those are the only languages available for now.
