Title: Cannot repair
Post by: ICTG on February 01, 2010, 04:07:31 PM
I have never been able to clean viruses using the BART CD. Each time the program traps a virus the action description shows: "Avast! cannot repair this kind of virus........"

Anyone have hints to improve the cleaning of viruses?

you might have to provide more details on the type of virus that you have on your system. Other tools than Avast could be needed...there are a few specialists here who can help; I'm sure they'll notice your thread  ;)
May be modify your thread title to make it more explicit.

Example of viruses on a Win2K Pro computer

- Win32: Sohanad - CP
- VBS: Malware-gen
- Win32: Hakaglan
- Win32: DsBot-Q

None of the above could be repaired...

I was about to spend a whopping $299 on the Avast! BART CD - Serviceman License but several of my customer's computers running Avast have been infected by various malware recently.  I have used Avast! for years but am now losing confidence in it.

I raised this issue in virus forum at [ http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55454.0 ] but so far it appears to be a functional problem with Avast!

Until this is resolved, I am not installing Avast! on any systems.

ICTG: the malware names you mentioned are not file infectors - so thinking about "repairing" them doesn't make any sense.
The only thing you can do with them (and most of the rest of today's malware) is remove  (delete) them.

So if I understand you correctly, the viruses will be cleaned but nothing else??

This again means that I can delete all files that are infected with below examples without making a computer not working?

Win32: Virtob
Win32: VB-HVH [Wrm]
HTML: Iframe-inf
Win32: Trojan-gen
Win32: Spyware-gen [Spy]
Win32: Agent-AABV [Trj]
Win32: AutoIt-GM [Wrm]
VBS: Malware-gen
VBS: AutoRun-I

Win32:Virtob is a file infector, so it's certainly not the case there.
But no, avast! is not able to repair this particular virus infection. Since the virus corrupts some files (i.e. it's not possible to repair them at all), I'd rather suggest to reinstall the system infected by Virtob/Virut, instead of trying to remove the infection.

Yes, I tried all of that. The only thing I wasnt sure how to check is the Make sure that no other program is listening on port 41952 instruction. Any suggestions ?
Also, I am using DHCP and no static IPs. Is this a problem ?
