Title: XP SP3, first boot always locks up...
Post by: blacklac on February 04, 2010, 06:55:30 PM
I, myself, have a PC with XP SP3 and I recently installed avast5 on my parents PC, which is also XP SP3.  On an initial bootup, both of our computers will lock up shortly after the boot.  An immediate reboot solves the problem and all is well again.  Only issue I seem to have with avast5.  I used the removal tool before installing, also.

I don't know if there is any other info I can give you, any kind of event log screen or anything.

Oh, and yes, we both have .396 installed.

Hi, what did you replace with Avast5?

I'm assuming you did have something on both machines before installing Avast.

Most AV manufacturer's are now producing dedicated removal tools to get rid of all the crap that the uninstall routine leaves behind. I was running Avast 5 on XP with no problems before upgrading to Win7-64HP.

More info, please...

I was using Avast 4.8 Free and used the removal tool on both computers.

I just tried a manual Program Update on my parents PC and it got to step 3/3 "Web Shield" and locked it up again.  Rebooted and attempted the same update and nothing was found.  Strange...

I may try to disable auto update on boot up and see if that solves the issue.  Although, I'm pretty sure Program updates require verification...  Yes, program update are set to ask for manual updates.  Virus definitions are set to fully auto update.

Ah, it seems MBAM paid version may be the issue, from other threads.  I will disable real-time scanning on MBAM and see how that goes.
