So I am trying to install Avast 5 Free on my work laptop with previously had MSE. The OS is XP Pro SP3. MSE successfully uninstalls and after a reboot the Windows security center is cleared. No running av. I install Avast and it installs fine. Once its done I open up Avast and it says 'services not started, click fix now". Well I do and nothing happens. I do a repair on the install and nothing happens. I uninstall and reinstall and the same results. I tried this 4 times now, twice under a normal login and twice under Admin. How can I make Avast start? BTW there is NO OTHER security running.
-
Nice no help.....................Looks like I will be keeping MSE since no Mods have answered me. Nice support forum guys.
-
when you did the reinstall did you trie to remove it with asw.Clear before reinstall ?
How to uninstall our software using aswClear.exe: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
-
Been there done that, same thing. Avast installs and uninstalls perfectly fine but when I click "fix now" nothing happens and the services are not running .
-
hmmmm....after removal....try cleaning with CCleaner and Eusing free registry cleaner. and restart before install
CCleaner http://www.piriform.com/
Eusing http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm

Hi Dieselman, how are you :)
Are you serious ? I can't beleve that you of all people have problems to install Avast! 5.
Greetz, Red.
-
Now Rednose maybe you will beleive their is a problem much bigger with Avast 5 then you all want to beleive.
-
Been there done that. Rednose this is my work pc. Not my own pc. Cleaning up with any registry cleaner does nothing.
-
Well my old friend, don't you know that should not install Avast! 5 free on a work PC in the first place ;)
Greetz, Red.
-
Work pc...................NOT A company pc. Get your facts straight rednose. I have my own laptop that GM bought me. I am not breaking the rules of Avast Free cause its not across company computers. All of us are responsible for our own laptops. Please refrain from replying unless you can aid in my problem.

what i would say to try is install version 5. make sure that you update the program (if just downloaded today then do not worry about that part, but if you have 5.0.377, then it is more of a must or re-download it) to make sure that it is fully updated, then reboot the PC. if that does not work, try rebooting it one more time. I know that this may sound silly but i have had a couple computers here that had problems where it wound not start up properly after installed. it would not even update. rebooting it one time partly fixed it but it did not completely work fine until after the 2nd reboot. If you are reading the registration info fine that it has time left and is registered, but not starting up, maybe try resetting the bois too. I have seen 1 time where that has fixed it too. those are my 2 suggestions.

Hi Dieselman
Have you tried installing in Safe Mode? If not, I'd clear it out with the uninstall utility first and then reboot into Safe Mode and try to install from there (reboot after install, of course).
In case you're not aware, Safe Mode is started by hitting F8 when it's booting (kinda the same way you have to keep hitting a certain key to get into your bios). As it starts booting up (at the memory count screen) start hitting F8 and it should bring up a screen with the options. Just pick the regular Safe Mode and enter, and when you have to login, do so with an admin account. The icons will be huge, but it should install the same. Reboot to normal mode after the install is done and see if it helped.
-
Installing from safe mode gives mixed results.
I would however boot into safe mode and remove MSE, uninstall avast, run the avast uninstall tool.
Then reboot and install from normal mode. If this doesn't work you may have to post the setup.log file to get a better idea what is going on.
-
i saw this on one system all i ended up having to do was reboot a few times and the services started after 3-4 boots not sure why but its running perfect now
the other thing i notice is the scan page all the choices are blank until i reboot 2 times. this happened on 3 systems now

Dieselman
Why not try downloading avast 4.8 free
Then Start/Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs/remove avast! free Antivirus
Then install avast 4.8 then if & when installed your icon on bottom right side (right click icon) Update options were Engine and virus definitions and Program. Click on Program and update to avast 5
This is how I did it an my OS is XP.
Don't know if this helps but does give you another option to try.
Cheers

@ Dieselman : I had the same problem, see this thread : http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55232.msg466993#msg466993
and after a few reboots it settled down and all is working fine - keep at it !
-
Dieselman, have you tried starting the avast service from Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services?
-
i saw this on one system all i ended up having to do was reboot a few times and the services started after 3-4 boots not sure why but its running perfect now

3 or 4 times.. guess i got it lucky. when i had that problem it was just 2 times... i will have to remember that it may take 3 or 4 reboots..

Ok well work was slow so I played around. I am well versed in pc's BTW. Here are the steps I did and NOTHING was successful. There are serious bugs in Avast 5.
1. Uninstalled MSE and rebooted
2. Installed Avast 5 Free (version 5.0.396)
3. Installed fine but GUI says "Fix now" services not started
4. Click on "fix now" and nothing happens
5. Rebooted. Same problem.
6. Rebooted. Same problem.
7. Rebooted. Same problem.
8. Ran the repair tool for Avast and rebooted. Same problem.
9. Uninstalled Avast using the avast uninstaller and rebooted.
10. Installed Avast again and same problem.
11. Rebooted. Same problem.
12. Went into services and tried starting. Got error codes.
13. Rebooted. Same problem.
14. Uninstalled Avast 5 and installed Avast 4.8
15. Works like a charm. Avast 4.8 works. :)
16. Uninstalled Avast 4.8 with the avast uninstaller and rebooted.
17. Installed Avast 5 and problem is back.
18. Uninstalled Avast 5 with the avast uninstaller.
19. Installed AVG and AVG works. Uninstalled
20. Installed Avira Free and Avira Free works. Uninstalled.
21. Reinstalled MSE and my story has ended.
With all that said and done there is obvious problems with Avast 5.

i now have avast installed on 15 pc's the paid internet security version for various systems. other than the one time i have no issues at all with it. now im not saying its 100% bug free imo all programs have bugs of some sort or another even after years. but for me this is rock solid and perfectly stable and i have yet to have any issues other than the one time.
-
Well I fix, repair and clean infected pc's for a living. I have built several gaming machines. I am no noob but I have never ever had any trouble installing any sort of security on ANY pc. You have no idea who I am but there isn't much I do not know about pc's. This is a bug and needs to be fixed. There are other posts like mine so I know I am not the only one. I have also tried installing Avast on some of my customer's pc and ending up with the same result. I am sticking with MSE for now. Hopefully the Avast team will fix this. If Avast 4.8 installs and works then so should Avast 5.0. BTW on my home pc's I use KIS. Installing software should never be this complicated.
-
i was never accusing you of not knowing how to. i also do the same for a living. maybe its one specific driver from that system even causing a conflict. even if you do a fresh install it could still be from a driver installed by windows etc.. im not at all saying its you i was saying you are one of the very few with this issue thats all imo i dont think its really at all a widespread bug because very few are having this issue. i agree something they should look at. have you sent the log files to them so they can see whats going on?? i may have missed it but did you attempt to see if its running in safe mode (though i assume you did). i have done more than prob 50+ installs of avast since 5 came out either as a upgrade for my customers running 4.x because of them not wanting to attempt it themselves or people i have recc this to as a free solution plus all of my own systems. no issues yet with any except the one mentioned.
i hope you can get it going i love the new version myself.
-
I like it to but the Avast team needs to address these issues. Yes I tried safe mode. Either way you shouldn't have to jump threw hopes just to install any kind of software.
-
You're not alone!
I have the same problem.
Have also tried all "magic stuff" suggested. Still not working.
To bad, cause I have been using Avast for a very long time and never ever had any problems.
So far, 5.0 sucks big time with blue screens and no protection the times it does not blue screen.
I'm upgrading to 4.8 and hope it will be supported for a long time.

1. Which blue screens? There are no known issues that would result in a blue screen in the current version of avast.
2.If you tried running the service using the Administrative Tools -> Services applet, what error message did you get?
-
After install I reboot the computer as it was needed to complete installation.
When logging in to my account the machine blue screened.
After a new reboot and a new log in I got another blue screen.
I got this in total 4 times and finally the machine started and logged my in. Just to find Avast not working at all.
Since I have not installed anything else recently and haven't had a blue screen for at least a year the only conclusion is that Avast was causing it.
After several wasted hours of trying to get 5.0 to work I'm now happy to be using 4.8 again. This one works!
Not sure I want to try 5.0 after seeing the many users having problems so far.
-
Were you using the latest build (5.0.418)?
Do you still have the corresponding minidumps (files in the \windows\minidump folder)? If so, can you please send them to me? (click the envelope icon below my picture).
BTW is this an Acer laptop?
Thanks
Vlk
-
Not sure about the version. Started the update from 4.8 yesterday.
I'm sending you a minidump.
-
crapmaster, the problem should now be solved.
Please download the latest setup package from http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe and try again.
Thanks much

The whole Avast 5 thing doesn't work for me. I've backed down to 4.8 for the time being. I started another topic about the license key, but my problems completely mirror dieselman's. In addition, when installing/uninstalling 5, reboot crashes at least 12 times. I do get a step further each time, but still.....
I'm willing to provide whatever log files you might like to look at, if I haven't already deleted them.
My computer is an HP/Compaq nx9420, running XP Pro, SP3, IE 8, wireless connection, Intel dual core T7200 @ 2Ghz with 2G of RAM...
-
I have EXACTLY the same symptoms that dieselman has listed above. Services will not start and clicking on the fix and start buttons does nothing. I also have a X embedded in the Avast icon in the system tray. Says I am unprotected. Tried all the stuff suggested to fix the problem but get the same results. I'm using Windows 7 pro 32bit. Did a restore using my Acronis image and I'm back to version 4.8. Going to stay there until I can figure out what to do next. Got about 4 hours tied up in two different unsuccessful attempts to try and get version 5.0.418 to work. Will try again after Avast releases a few more updates. Maybe that might work.
-
Did you boot after installing?
Any other previous antivirus (or just the 4.8 avast)?
-
I booted after installing and Avast has been the only package in my computer since installing windows 7.
I tried turning off all startup programs in msconfig and installing and that made no difference.
Everything installs fine but am unable to start any of the services in Avast.
-
Had some time so I jumped on this problem again.
I un-installed then ran cleantool 4.8 and reinstalled 5.0.418, booted. Nothing
Then uninstalled ran Cleantool 5 and deleted all instances of Avast in my registry. Booted. Nothing
Un-installed and ran cleantool 5. Reinstalled 5 in safe mode booted and nothing. Made copy of my setup.log. Booted
Say's program is registered. Don't know why since everything with the word Avast had been removed from the computer earlier.
Services shows the three Avast services status as blank. Second column is auto and manual on the last two.
Tried starting Avast in services but all I could get is a 1068 error. Booted
Program shows unknown version and unknown virus definitions. Shield module not running.
Ran CCleaner.
Clicking on fix and start but that did nothing. Booted
Booted again
Mumbled to myself that's it. I'm going restore back to 4.8.
Booted one more time and Avast sprung to life.
Prompted me for registration. I registered and everything started successfully.
The only thing I did that has not been tried in the past is the safemode install and run CCleaner that someone said to try in another post. I find it hard to believe CCleaner could have fixed the problem but something I did fixed it. I know I'm not going to restore to 4.8, do a reinstall of 5 and run CCleaner to test it.
Thanks for all the tips in this forum.

Hey guys
I actually had the same problem and had no clue what to do. As suggested by another user, I did go into admin services > applications and tried to start it from there but then it said that it was marked for deletion (I had avast 4.8 I think before) and yes I did reboot after it uninstalled and again after it installed. I had the same problem as stated above. Though without the use of any long or tedious methods I managed to get it working actually within 5-10 minutes!
What did I do?
1) Go to control panel and went on uninstall/change
2) Went on 'Fix installation'
3) Ran 'Update' a few times through the installer
4) Went on 'Fix now' from the UI and worked
It really was that simple for me, pictures to show I'm not shitting you

having the same issue
program version 6.0.1125
have restarted 5 times now
scanning page was previously black
it is now filled but attempting to scan results in an error
"unable to start scan-There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"
does this for every type of scan after target is specified.
cannot start shields from shields tab. error
"Unable to start the File System Shield- shield unreachable"
From Summary tab fixnow prompts a "this program needs permission to continue"
then nothing happens
same result for start program and enabling shields from the start bar near the clock

avast! has released 6.0.1198 beta. I would suggest a "clean" install to see if that fixes your problems. Try this http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Follow the instructions for each version of avast! Before the "uninstall" download http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=80315.msg658226#msg658226 :)
