Title: Nokia Ovi Suite & Avast Internet Security crashes.
Post by: psikofunkster on February 11, 2010, 06:00:33 PM
Hi,

I changed from kaspersky Internet Security 2010 to Avast Internet Security. I paid for a full year license and this is my first post.

Well, Apparently Avast is blocking and crashing the nokia ovi app, if i disable avast protection the app works fine.

Today nokia released version 2.1 but the problem is still there... what can i do?

If it's the Nokia app that's crashing, that should be a question for Nokia, shouldn't it? ;)

Anyway, it's hard to say with this info... what exactly does "Avast is blocking" mean? Do you see any virus detection popup?
What if you stop only a particular resident shield, instead of disabling the whole protection - is there one shield that helps? I'd try the Script Blocker, the File System Shield, ...

only a question for Nokia? yes and no cause the ovi suite works fine when Avast is disabled and when i was using kaspersky 2010 worked fine too, so....

When i try to connect to to my nokia account (through the ovi suite), the app freezes and crashes.

BTW im using windows 7 32 bits ultimate.

Can you try stoping avast! resident shields one by one, to see if any of them helps?

Just a wild guess, but please try to search the installation folder of Nokia Ovi for a file called SQLite.dll  (though I don't know if Ovi stores all its files in one folder) - is there such a file there?

Well, the name is slightly different (3)... but chances are the conflict will be fixed in the upcoming program update (to be released very soon).

Hi  :)

I'm not really sure if my reply is going to help in any way .. Coz I'm No Expert!  :-[

But I've seen reference to that SQLite thing .. Plus the 3 .. Before - Here: http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=265201

Don't ask me if I think it was a Virus or False Positive... Coz wouldn't have clue  ::)

But I Don't Know  :-\  Something just made me think I should mention what I've seen.
In Fact!
I'm sure I've seen something like that SQ thing somewhere on one of my computers - Don't Own a Nokia Phone  :o
So I hope to god that it was an FP they think is malware on Wilders  :(

The Nokia Ovi Suite is a bit of a monster. I recently repaired a PC for a Nokia salesman who use his phone as a modem and with PC hooked in as the one hardware profile, as recommended by Nokia. What an ordeal. With this kind of rig you want to use ccleaner and a good defrag regularly and dont allow any garbage to amass on your system. Also you will find PC Suite taking up default values all through your registry making uninstall of the Suite a mammoth task. I have performed this lengthy uninstall a few times for users who have Nokia phones and what I do is set them up so that they can use their phone as an add-on rather than an integrated part of their operating system. They lose a few functions and features but nothing that they would normally use anyway. They can hook their phone to the computer neat, without the Suite, and transfer data and picture back and forth okay like that. I dont like to put down Nokia at all because very good phones, but I find that a lot of these proprietary software that people use as part of their business are like this, always crashing, and they always complaining. I just try to avoid them.

the ovi suite works fine for me when Avast is disabled and when i was using kaspersky 2010 worked fine too.
So what do i have to do in order to work fine while avast is working?

You will find Vlk has started a few different threads for people who are having problems with the new avast 5 programs and their own residual software and system config. In the end you may need to provide a dump file which may be helpful in respect to all others who will be using Ovi Suite with the new releases. Its not really my call, but you will see that there have been other request much like yours, which is obviously bona fide issue, that have been sorted out through the channels provided in the forum. No offence intended. Regards, Mark.

PS - the lady in the real estate agency says to me: 'so you're into computers, can you tell me why our firm's software always keeps crashing'. I reply: 'I'm not that good with computers really" and make for the door. Such a common occurrence.

psikofunkster,

I have Avast 5 Home, so I don't have the script shield. I use Nokia PC suite rather than Ovi because of the particular model phone I have, and I would certainly not want to loose a lot of the features it provides. Using the phone as a modem is probably the only function I don't use often.

As a workaround until someone identifies what causes this particular problem, can you just turn off the script shield before using the Ovi suite and turn it back on after. You will still have more protection than many AV systems offer.

Alternatively, does the script shield have any settings that would allow you to exclude the Ovi Suite?

disabling the script shield solves the freezing issue but i still can't login into my account.
nop the script shield doesn't have any settings.

Yr screenshot does not readily translate into english. I dont want to rewrite the details so that I can then insert then in a translator because I have other things to do. You can make good use of the forum but you have to go part of the way yourself. Do you have a problem with the english speaking forum, because there are members who can readily translate. And I think your best chance is through others who use OVi or at least Nokia software like bong 2x. This is good feedback. And you really need to provide more info about yr system config and settings.

OS: Windows 7 32bits ultimate.
Avast Internet Security 5.0.418
VPS: 1002221-1, 22-02-2010
PC: Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.66, 4GB RAM.
Internet Connection: Wireless through a gateway.
No email client.
No other security software.

Steps to produce the error:
1) intall the latest ovi suite after having installed avast.
2) execute the ovi suite
3) Try to login into the ovi account or synchronize the phone content or use the app.
4) the app freezes and i can't login into the account.

As i said if i disable avast or if i use kaspersky internet security 2010 the app works fine.

You can post your hijackthis log to the forum either complete (as it is not so large) or through Additional Options...on the reply post page. There are others here more expert with these logs than me. I cannot see a problem in hijackthis log other than you are carrying a lot of software but all looks in good order to me.

I was thinking there had been an issue with avast 5 and Realplayer but that was actual with PowerDVD

Hmm your connexions looks very tidy. There is a possibility of a genuine conflict with new release and Ovi Suite

Create a dump of the AvastSvc.exe and process (Task Manager -> Processes tab -> right-click AvastSvc.exe and choose "Create Dump File") and upload it to our ftp server, please. (from Vlk)

ftp server   http://  ftp://ftp.asw.cz/incoming

Example of procedure
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53314.msg452241#msg452241

Example of different issue where problem was resolved (in this case conflict with Acer hardware)
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55564.msg470399#msg470399

I dont know about itunes because I dont run any Apple software on Windows (stick to mp3 player)
Sorry dont run Realplayer either.
But there have been no other significant queries about either of them with the new release that I have noticed.

Edit - current procedure is not to use the avast ftp server unless advised so by one of the alwil, in which instance the team member would be waiting for yr data transfer. no sense in overloading the server.
Instead use email channel, for example, vlk@avast.com or virus@avast.com and sales@avast.com and so on.

did you try to configure your vpn?
it can be configure to max of 921 kbps
because using ovi suit in avast internet security
drive you down into 2.1-kbps only
and its depend also to your nokia phone
express music has the bigger modem capacity or nokia gold.
but some other nokia model using high security software cannot resist the screening
because your default settings is only 115kbps
try first to reconfigure the vpn from 115kbps to 921kbps
maybe it works and even avast internet security screen it you have until 460kbps lift.

My VPN? why do you assume that im using a VPN?, please don't assume whatever you imagine, that doesn't help.

oops im make wrong terms, ok your modem configuration,
to configure your modem
click start button
click connect to (if vista) show my connection ( if xp)
all modem description will show
right click to open the properties the it has an option to configure
change 115kbps to 921kbps.
this process can help you.
cause in my experience i cannot use synchronization of ovi suit, cause it make your system open to the public
synchronization at ovi suit let your modem to share everything in your system at the public and easy to hack
that's why when you use internet security it is freeze because it prevent to share important file on your system
at first time i give you a hint to use other method of accessing nokia phone as modem
you can make them as dial up alone without the use of any suit.
as long as your nokia phone driver is installed you can use dial up.
just try first to configure to 921kbps it will give you 460kbps to use your modem with ovi suit

Please mate, don' try to help, thanks.

I am glad I found this thread!

I have AIS 5.0.594 and I also use Nokia Ovi Suite 2.2.0.245.

Via ovi suite I have been able to log into my nokia ovi account. After I installed AIS it is not possible. I get a error message from ovi suite that there is something wrong with my network settings. I have, in the FW section of AIS, set nokia OVI suite to full access and ask. That dint help.

I tried to disable the FW in AIS and then I was able to log into my nokia account. If I uninstall AIS I can log into my nokia account as well. Any ideas how to fix this so I can use my ovi suite without having to turn my security down everytime I am connecting my phone to my computer??

This is a AIS problem, not a nokia problem!

Well two things here:

1) Avast has not been able to solve this issue. i've tried  and tried and they don't care as simple as that, well, maybe they do, but they can't solve it.

2) Nokia Ovi suit is one of the worst pieces of software out there (very buggy and resource hug, check nokia forum) the best way to go is pc nokia suite as far as i know.

I can in some way understand your concern about the ovi suite. I use it because for my phone, with gps, maps etc it is far better then the original pc suite. So I need avast to come up with a solution.

Well even with itunes searches freeezes im still having problems from time to time the one to blame is avast however i prefer to use avast than kasperksy.

Hope you solve this problem, i have reported this issue with avast and they have tried to help me but so far no solution.
