Title: Call to action: problems after upgrading from v4.8 to 5.0?
Post by: Vlk on February 15, 2010, 09:54:38 PM
Guys,

some of you are reporting some v5 related problems when upgrading from v4.8.

This is not such a wonder, given that we're currently doing over 400,000 such upgrades a day (so even if it worked in 99.9% cases, for example, it would still fail for 400 people a day).

Now, we'd really to know what's going on on these problematic machines.

To start with the analysis, it would be very useful if you could send us the setup log which contains all the information about the update.
The file is usually located in the

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup

folder, and is called setup.log. You can either attach it here, or (even better, or if you're concerned about privacy) send it to my email address (click the envelope icon below my picture).

Thanks much for your help,
Vlk

Sorry, only found an empty file called setup.ini (maybe because I uninstalled avast 5 already).

I can't get the free 5.0 to start from the fix now or start program buttons. The hourglass spins momentarily and quits.

tried "start program", "fix now", unistall/reinstall, repair, update, and start service from control panel-adminstrative tools several times.  Nothing seems to work.

I have the same problem, though with a variation. I run Avast free edition on a PC with Windows Vista and one one with Windows XP. The one with Vista runs without problem, the one with XP has the same problem on which people write (program doesn't start, I reinstalled it twice, I did the repair etc)

here is the set up log. I did a restoration before installing Avast again. But the same problem persists.

No problems (with 418 -- yet) here , but ....

Apparently in v5 we're back to the old days, and the setup.log files once again are continuously increasing in size, suggesting that I go back to my old habit of periodically editing them down to just the last couple of weeks or maybe a month.

If a problem should now mysteriously arise, would you need the whole (i.e., untrimmed) setup.log?

@MikeBCda
But avast! has a setting defining max size of any log file (4096 Kb by default). Or current size of your setup.log is greater than this value?

FIREWALL WON'T START!! ???

So far 2 of our 4 PCs have accepted the AIS 5.0 package without problems. They are very comparably configured and use RealTek eth adapters. My trouble system uses a Marvell Yukon eth adapter and I suspect the problem has to do with that. The log file shows errors when dealing with the service: aswNdis2.
I just sent technical support a full description of my "firewall not starting" problem and attached the setup log file. Hopefully they can find a solution soon.  When they do, I will post back here in case others are having the same problem.

Cheers!

physicsguybri, did you have any other 3rd party firewall before AIS? Did you run AIS beta previously?

Maybe it's been changed in v5, but in 4.8 and earlier that setting didn't seem to apply to the setup log, just the warning logs.

Hi there,
strange behaviour on my notebook.
I have XP, office 2007 and Internet Security 5, and when I'm triyng to save a Word document nothing happens... nor save neither save as.
In Xp when you do a search for a file or folder the pop-up window to digit the filename does not come out.
Removing Avast everithings goes fine.
Any clue?
Thanks.

I upgraded and now it says the "Trial period can not be activated.  Check that you are connected to the internet and your proxy setting are correct".  I am and they are.  It also does not recognise the license.dat file as a License key. I went from free 4.8 to Internet Security Pro 5 on a Windows 7 laptop.  Any ideas of how to fix this and get what I paid for?

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been available for over a year and a half that provides many Critical Updates and performance improvements.

You need to start Internet Explorer then go to Tools then Windows Update and download all of the available updates.

Go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don't automatically download or install them.

Go to Secunia Online Software Inspector then run it to see what other applications are vulnerable:

I hadn't heard a database update notification after installing v5, so I checked the systems sound folder. Windows still points to the old Avast4 directory for sounds, which was of course deleted by the new installation. I've manually set it to point at the new sounds (in \Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5 for anyone else in the same boat), but it might be something to correct in the new installer.
Incidentally, the new "blip" is a lot less informative than the old "virus database has been updated". Are these the final sounds for v5 or will they be updated?

7. Check and post the results.

How will this fix the "License.dat" issue.  This is the reason I can not register.  I was not provided the License key in the proper format for Avast 5.

I had Avast! 4.8 latest updated, after uninstalling it and installing Avast! 5.0.418 and rebooting, all good but after the seconf reboot 'SeaMonkey.exe' couldn't be executed, I uninstalled SeaMonkey 2.0.2, but 'SeaMonkey.exe' remained but I couldn't delete it, I made a 'chkdsk' on all partitions, twice (one in Safe Mode), I downloaded Avast! 4 & 5 Cleaners, I used 4 Registry Cleaners (COMODO System Cleaner, CCleaner, ERUNT and Advanced System Care PRO), I even defragged C: to see if it was a NTFS issue but no, all ran OK but I still can't Install SeaMonkey 2.0.2. Files are copied to the disk but 'SeaMonkey.exe' is not created nor the SeaMonkey's user profile (%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Profile\xxxxxxxx.default).

Could this be my system or Avast! 5 glitch?

Thank you.

After upgrading to Avasv Ver 5 I lost the ability to access POP and SMPT server of my ISP it turn out that Avast has placed a filter on both and the email client thinks that it needs SSL but since SSL is not enabled it wont connect. The mail server does not use SSL. It works ok if I disable the POP and SMPT checking but the old version had no problem filtering the emails.???

The email client doesn't think anything, it just does as you tell it.

I would suggest this seems more like firewall blocking, but I can't say for sure as you haven't posted the complete error message ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and try to check your email, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

When I was trying to find the problem I turned off the firewall. The error message was as follows
Unable to send or receive messages for the Aanet.com (hughthomson) account. The e-mail server returned an error.

Server Error: 0x800CCC90
Server Response: -ERR Cannot establish SSL, SSL_connect error 38
Server: 'mail.aanet.com.au'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC90
Protocol: POP3
Port: 110
Secure(SSL): No

SSL was not turned on in the protocal settings and the SSL cache was cleared but the error still persisted.
It was not until I went into Avast mail scan/expert setting and unticked the scan POP3 and SMPT
that I was able to get may email running again. (I had tried a few email clients I have and all behaved the same way same error. I am using Windows Live at the moment. It is working fine at the moment with firewall turned back on but if I retick the expert setting in mailscan it causes the same error. It is quite consistent.

Open the Mail Shield, Expert Settings, SSL Accounts, and confirm that the accounts that don't use SSL have None set in the Encryption column. None of my email accounts require SSL and all are reported in the settings mentioned as Encryption, None, see image.

Once you have confirmed they are set at None or reset them to None, enable scanning again and click OK to accept the changes. Check to see if that resolves the problem.

I also have a serious problem after upgrading from 4.8 to 5.0.418.

In my case, Avast disables everytime the computer goes to sleep or even turns off the screen, so everytime I leave the computer for several minutes, I have to turn Avast on again, as I have the message that "Avast! antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state.".

And when I do press Fix or whatever, everything seems to turn back on, but I still get a message saying sth like "the following components could not be started: [and a list of all the components here, mail, IM, p2p etc]".

If it's not fixed soon I will have to uninstall it and go back to 4.8 I guess :/

Please help!

(I'm running Win 7 Ult 64-bit on a ThinkPad X61t)

This doesn't even look like a beta, looks more like an premature Alpha.

I like Avast! but since it has MIllions of paying users this is a lack of interest by ALWIL Soft, because they have the money hence the resources to fix this and realease it the right way; if this continues, well, I'm going to do as someone suggested to go Avira since now offers the same features in the FREE Ver.

I purchased the new Avast Internet program and installed it over the older free version on my laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit) and everything works great.  Then I installed it on my desktop running Windows XP Professional (64 bit) and it initially did some funny things like causing the computer to reboot itself automatically about 3 or 4 times.  Finally, after uninstalling (windows control panel uninstall only) and re-installing, I was able to get it loaded.  However both the real time shields and the firewall were turned off.  I was able to turn on the shields, but the firewall would not turn on.  Have it running on the computer with the Windows firewall turned on, but would like to get the Avast firewall to work.  Any suggestions? :(

I'm running avast! free version but may help to check yr Services.

right-click My Computer, select Manage, click through Services and Applications to Services and see what is says for yr firewall.
Shoould be Automatic and Started.

Edit - Otherwise    http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55739.msg472725#msg472725 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55739.msg472725#msg472725)

You may have to run 4.8 uninstall utility first, then run uninstall utility for yr AIS paid version and then re-install AIS again clean.

g'day! I've tried to upgrade from Avast free to the discount Avast internet Security.

The installation failed, a log was made, but somehow wasn't stored (or i can't find it, more likely)
The cause of faillure was that the installation required uninstalling the free version and the installation-license key couldn't find the free version.....

How to act now, the local helpdesk is probably snowboarding or whatever, they've not replied for a week!

I can't open the licence key, it's file is hidden or something alike.

Thanks!

I've succesfully manually removed the old Avast an now the new version would install.

However.... the firewall is so secure i can't connect to the internet unless i turn of the firewall.

How change the setting to a normal and useble firewall (it's now in low risk, but stil)
