Title: Avast 5 and Win 2000?
Post by: MikeBCda on February 16, 2010, 07:41:14 PM
I'm a little confused about compatibility between v5 and 2000.  My wife's system is a second-hand antique running 2000 (don't know which SP, but I think it's the "current" one), and I installed 4.8 on that about a year ago.  Since she doesn't have internet access, with its attendant perils, I've simply downloaded and run the VPS-update installer for her once or twice a month and run an on-demand full scan then (I keep all resident shields active, though, except for the ones specific to internet use (web, email, P2P, etc.)

On avast's product-description page, v5 is "compatible with" XP and later.  However, if I click on the "system requirements" link, 2000 is also supported.

Could someone please clarify this, since it seems to be a contradiction?

Even if v5 will run on her system, I'm holding off updating from 4.8 since, judging from numerous posts here, there seems to be total confusion about whether or not (and if so, how) 5 on an offline computer can get its defs (and when appropriate, the program itself) updated.

Thanks and best.

I think if it is supported it is for win2k SP4.

You can I believe get the full VPS and download that on a system with connection and transfer via USB stick and run on the off-line system.

This is the link, http://www.avast.com/download-update (http://www.avast.com/download-update) and there is a 4.8 and 5.0 version of the VPS.

Thanks, David.  I haven't recently checked changes at the site (which I think are still in progress), so am not up to date on what's currently there.  Even that thing about whether or not 2000 is supported may have been been changed by now.

The problem with avast! v5 on Win2000 is that VS2008 redist can not be installed during avast! installation.
So BEFORE avast! v5 install you should manually copy 3 dll into Win2000 system32 directory. These DLL are MSVCR90.DLL, MSVCP90.DLL and MFC90U.DLL
After these DLL were copied you can start ordinary avast! installation. Now it works in my Win2000 virtual machine. Express scan was completed successfully.

Thanks, psw -- that probably explains the difference (if it's still there) between the two pages.  I'll definitely save a copy of your reply for reference when-and-if.
