Title: SHIELDS DOWN (Avast! Free 5.0.418)
Post by: Bellzemos on February 19, 2010, 03:35:33 PM
Hello!

My little brother is using the latest Avast on Windows XP system and he says that the shields turn off at least once a day and he has to click on FIX IT every time. We already uninstalled and reinstalled Avast a few times, but it doesn't work. That's also a reason why I'm still using 4.8. Is there any info that I should send to you to see into the problem? Please help!

Thanx! :)

There is a problem is his computer.
That shouldn't be a reason for not updating.
Maybe more info helps... Operational system, other antivirus and security programs...

Are there any recent unpXXXXXXX.mdmp files (X are some numbers) in the folder
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log
?

Hello, my avast! is doing the same thing since 2 days ago. I have avast! IS, and from time to time some shields become inactive and I have to turn off all the shields and then activate again. I have not installed any new program and before this avast! IS was running perfectly. Some of our customers are reporting the same, for example in one case the customer installs avast! 5 and all is ok, but when he restarts the computer avast! appears with the button "Fix it".

Can they follow what Igor said and send the files to, maybe, virus@avast.com ?

The customer that I was saying in my last reply has solved the problem updating his Windows using Windows Update. I hope this can help somebody with the same issue. In my computer, it is all ok all this day.

Can you please upload those files (maybe packed into an archive) to
Code: [Select]
ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming?
virus@avast.com isn't really the right address for this...
Thanks.

Bellzemos, I use FileZilla.
You could post ftp.avast.com/incoming into Windows Explorer to "open" the folder also.

OK, I've uploaded the file (Bellzemos-log.rar) via Explorer. Please tell me what's wrong and why the shields are going down. Thank you! :)

I managed to do it, thank you anyway. I hope that this problem with shields can be resolved or I will have to install the old version on my brother's PC again.

I see that a lot of users are complaining about the same problem (shields going down for no reason). Have you reviewed my Avast Log files? :)

Yup, I think I have the same problem. I've described it here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=56379.0

Someone help!

If needed I can upload my logs too.

Yes, I have the same problem as you, except that I'm running a Windos XP on a desktop PC. Help us please!  :)

And that helps us how exactly?

Or do you have the same problem perhaps? If so, then there's at least the three of us..

and btw Pro is still 29.98, until the 5th: http://www.avast.com/lp-upgrade-4-5-paid

I really like Avast and want to use the v5, but I'll go back to v4.8 and wait until v5 becomes more stable. I hope that happens soon. The v4.8 works perfectly. :)

Hey, you might be interested to know that I managed to fix the problem with my Avast :)

At first I did a reinstall, but it didn't help, so this time what I did was:
1. download the Avast Removal Tool
2. run the tool from Windows in Safe Mode and uninstall Avast
3. reinstall Avast in a different directory

And now it works perfectly, no shields down since yesterday :)
Cheers

Update:
It does not work perfectly yet.. It still happens, just much less often. It happened once during the night. I don't yet know if it was any event which triggered it (the comp didn't go to sleep, it was just locked).

Thank you, but that din't convince me. I don't know why Avast team didn't review files I sent them. I'll wait with v5 until 4.8 is not supported anymore. And if at that time v5 won't work properly I'll have to switch to Avira. I hope that won't happen, because I love avast AV. We'll see...

Yeah, my problem is back, the shields have stopped again today. If it continues I'm reinstalling 4.8 if it's still possible..
