Title: Restore points and AIS
Post by: Lisandro on February 20, 2010, 06:47:04 PM
I've tried to use Windows Restore twice and both returned with an AIS error (can't restore file into avast5 folder).
First I've used with Self Defense module on. Failed.
Second I've disabled it. Failed also.

I'm quite sure this was an issue in the past that was solved. Am I wrong?

Hi  :)

Were you trying to do the Restore from within Windows or from Safe Mode?

System Restore always seems to have more chance of success if run from Safe Mode.

Hi Tech I just tried it on my system - I made an error that would show up if system restore failed, nothing dramatic and easily fixed.

I restored and at the end I received the same warning.  However, the system did restore - apart from the AIS files.  My intentional glitch disappeared, so restore does work

Any news?

really hope this will be fixed in the next build, what I didn't add to this thread:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=56155.msg474091#msg474091
...is that after a new system restoration, done in safe mode (but I forgot two things: deactivate avast defense module, and reboot in safe mode again after the restore phase) I couldn't run AIS anymore >>> "inconsistent state" message, had to uninstall and reinstall AIS  ::) (services refused to restart)
Title: Re: Restore points and AIS
Post by: Lisandro on February 24, 2010, 06:10:28 PM
I'm seeing that using restoring points could have made my computer to lose the Security Center recognition of avast... who knows.
Something is fishy and not a word from them...

just had worse  ;D partly off topic, partly on topic:
I wanted to give a shot to CIS 4 RC ...installed it (with AIS firewall uninstalled)...all worked fine, but got bored with it  and decided to uninstall it a few hours later. Uninstalled CIS, rebooted >>> my new internal IP was an IANA IP  ;D ... I have no idea how it happened (well may be but too long to explain, and I'm not sure at all). I couldn't connect anymore to my router of course, changed IPV4 settings manually to what it should have been... connecting to the router was possible, but with errors, ie no real access (was still denied somehow).

On topic again: decided to go for a system restoration, and forgot to disable Avast self defense module  ;D ...did all the restore operations in safe mode (ie, rebooted in safe mode too), looked successful, rebooted in normal mode, login screen >>> login in...a nice light blue...and empty taskbar as a sign of welcome, and a completely black desktop. Logged out, back in, the same, rebooted in safe mode, uninstalled AIS completely, rebooted again in safe mode to make sure the uninstall process would be complete, rebooted then in normal mode: hallelujah  :D my desktop is back; time to reinstall AIS >>> see you later guys  ;)

avast! free
I tested System Restore last night. Turn on System Restore, created a restore point, loaded an Abiword program from a setup.exe that I still kept when I uninstalled Abi because of such infrequent use - I used computer to do a few things, a few restarts, disabled avast self-defence module, then ran the System Restore and worked perfectly - Abiword was no longer on my system.

avast! free
Also have once had the problem with Window Defence Center not recognising avast - warning came up on sys tray at start up, and I had to re-advise WDC that I had my own antivirus, then updated Windows, and so far hasn't happened again. If it does, I will start my own thread.

Edit - XP, 32bit, and not using VM ware.

I cannot see how it works only with a warning in Win 7 (say, bug) when it works perfect in Vista.
They should be same restraints - with 32bit at least. But 64bit too - consider Vista has been out since 2006. Maybe not Win 7 64bit.

Do we have confirmation from someone running Vista with AIS suite that System Restore works perfect in that environment?

Create a new Restore point (as yourself with admin privileges will do) - name it something like 'start test Restore'
Run Desk Cleanup thru painful Vista questions til reach More Options / delete all but most recent restore point -and do that.
Download Abiword (to parallel my results)  http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55980.msg474933#msg474933 (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=55980.msg474933#msg474933)
Run successful Abiword install - check new program in Remove Programs and Features (Control Panel). (Open new file in Abiword and save as test file)
Disable avast self defense module.
Run a System Restore.
When Restore is successfully completed Abiword should no longer be installed on yr system. Only test file.

Considering the state of the boards, I don't think they keep overlooking this thread.

IMHO, although this is rather rare, there seem to be times when your persistence doesn't produce any constructive result, I guess, this is such case.  Generally speaking, depending on circumstances, our strengths can turn out to be our weak points.    :-\

Likewise, just my two cents.  ;)

just something I observed a few times, it's rather common with software companies, when there's a bad issue and they can't fix it yet, they don't answer the threads to avoid endless and useless discussions, and suddenly there's a post from the devs, when it's fixed  ;D asking if it's OK for everyone  ;) That's pure speculation, but I think they would post now if they needed more info, but first they probably have enough from what they read here, and second they're most likely able to reproduce the issue themselves... and work on it until it's fixed >>> next build  ;)

I don't want to discuss, just to know they're acknowledge and are working on it.

You know either of the "methods" you suggested won't work...
Well, then, I'd step back and see how your persistence contest with Alwil developers will end up.  ;)

Tech...I don't think ALWIL would ever ignore you.  ;) It just may not be an easy fix I'm thinking. I've just tried to restore to an earlier time, using build 454 and I haven't had success with it either.  We'll keep hoping and watching.
