Title: file scan via context menu
Post by: jjava on March 01, 2010, 11:09:12 AM
when scanning a file (or multiple files; exe, rar, etc.) using the context menu in windows explorer, the program displays neither the scanning screen nor the result screen.

is this a feature or a bug? Is there a workaround either way? thanks.

avast free; 5.0.418; xp sp2.

(it does function normally if a folder is scanned instead of a file.)

What exactly are you scanning? (location & type of the file)

i tried scanning avast's setup itself; then a couple of other setups (firefox, etc). ditto with zips & rars.

these are non-system files & located across different drives & folders.

if i try to scan a file test.exe (or test.rar) via the context menu avast doesn't display any activity.

if i put the same file in some folder & scan the folder via context menu then it does scan the file (at least it displays the amount of data tested, which is same as the file size).

I have scanned the following setups by placing them each in a seperate folder:

firefox Setup 3.5.1.exe (7.74 mb); data tested: 40.31 mb

wrar39b1.exe (1.29 mb); data scanned: 5.52 mb

spywareblastersetup351.exe (2.44 mb); data scanned: 10.40 mb

setup_av_free.exe (42.6 mb); data scanned: 42.63 mb

{I remember reading something similar (around last august at some forum) about the then beta that the context menu scan didn't work}. want to know if this is a known issue or possibly a glitch at my side.

I faced similar prob., rebooting solved it. Someone else in these forums experienced the same thing and got ok after reboot.
