Title: Avast 5 not updating and licence expired
Post by: LE4d on March 09, 2010, 06:29:44 PM
I've been using Avast (free version) for a while now but recently it told me it wasn't updating.  I checked my firewall was letting it through and eventually got an update by changing the proxy server as advised on this site.  After that though it still wouldn't update.  Then it told me my licence was expiring but wouldn't let me re-register.  Today I managed to install Avast 5 but it still tells me my licence has expired, won't let me re-register nor will it update.  The last message I had was "cannot connect to download 659.avast.com (74.55128.114:80)"
I use Windows Vista.  Help please??  Thank you.

What is your firewall ?
As the "cannot connect to download 659.avast.com (74.55128.114:80)" is usually associated to the firewall blocking the avast update.

Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

I think I've just got Windows Firewall but I have checked Avast! Antivirus and Avast.setup in the exceptions tab.  I have also got Malware but I don't think that's anything to do with a Firewall.
No it won't let Avast access the internet.  A common error message I get is 'cannot connect to server' when I know it is connected (wirelessly) to the internet.
Thanks for your help.

Does this only happen shortly after boot ?
As it might be that although you have an internet connection the wireless network isn't fully established.

Are you able to do a manual update from the avast UI, Maintenance, Update option ?

Hi thanks again.

No it doesn't happen only after boot, it is any time.

When I try updating manually via Avast Maintenance it says in Step 1/2 "Error: cannot connect to server" (but I am obviously connected because I'm writing this and have been online for an hour or so!)

Cannot connect to server has no relationship to your having a connection. It is trying and failing to connect to the avast update server/s or being blocked (see below).

I presume that it is still telling you that your license has expired.

If you installed avast 5 over 4.8 then that converts your license information (which has expired), why it isn't letting you re-register is beyond me, but until you manage to re-register and your license is expired it will block updates, so we now have a chicken and egg scenario.

So I would suggest a clean reinstall:
Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) ensure you get the version5 one (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0), aswClear5.exe and save it to your HDD.

Thank you very much for your help.  I will try that when I have a responsible teenager on hand to assist!
