I installed the trial version of the FREE program, then decided to install the Pro version. I tried to remove the FREE version, but apparently it didn't remove completely.
So, installed the Pro version, rebooted, did a scan, and then tried to shut the computer down (running Windows 7)... it wouldn't shut down (two cores out of 4 running at 100%). Finally went into Safe Mode, removed (I thought) Avast Pro from the control panel, and now it shuts down. However, looking at the registry, Avast is EVERYWHERE!
So, I have a few questions:
- does this NOT support Win 7?
- should I just re-install Avast Pro and see if it happens again?
- any other ideas?
I would really like to keep it because it looks promising, but I can't have it misbehave!

uninstall anything you got completely, reboot, and install the version you want. Avast 5 (any version) is problem free in Seven ;) (for most users)

You Should...
1) Uninstall -Avast 5
2) Run The Avast Uninstall Utility From Safe Mode: http://www.avast.com/en-gb/uninstall-utility
3) Delete Alwil Folder From - Program Files ( Note: You will need to Show.. Hidden Files & Folders )
looking at the registry, Avast is EVERYWHERE!
Take it that you're more confident with the registry than I am :-[ So...
4) Use CCleaner ( Optional! ) Just To Clean Out Avast Keys
5) Reinstall - Avast 5

@ Hally: please don't make things sound more complicated than they are. You've already posted your CCleaner solution a few times, this is just unneeded ::) the uninstall utility will serve if things go really bad with the normal uninstall procedure, otherwise it doesn't have to be used either. The normal uninstall procedure does its job as it should. Also, Avast doesn't leave registry entries "everywhere" as you said. Ther OP is in Windows Seven, he doesn't need to unhide anything to show program files (like in XP), and program data (ie all users in XP) would also be a good place to check, but guess what, avast uninstall process cleans it well too ;)

Oh yes it does! I have a registry to prove it! And I don't understand why it requires a separate uninstaller, but at this point, I just want my system back the way it was before all this happened.
I'm going to give it one more try as you suggested, and I will post the results.

it will install as 64 if you're on 64, there's only one setup file for both architectures; and before you ask, you will notice that Avast main processes (seen in task manager) are labeled 32 bit. That's normal. Just the drivers are 64 bit and the install will go to program files (as opposed to x86).

Hi, can you post a few registry keys that are left after uninstall. We will surely try to fix that.

Because the Avast Uninstall Utility is Very Often recommended on this forum .. To make sure a computer is clean and ready for a fresh install.

I see that you now have more than 20 posts which will permit you to update your profile to include signature information.
Go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then Signature: and put information about your system if you like just like my signature so that the helpers can offer pertinent advice.

What hally says about showing hidden files and folders it's true, i know because i use win 7 64 bits, and like other windows versions, if u want to see some application data, you need to unhidde it, because it gets protected by the OS. And i have used a registry cleaner for avast, because sometimes, it forget to delete some keys. Now i dont have a record of everytime i do a registry clean. But i assure you "sometimes" avast uninstaller, not aswclear, left some registry info in the OS. And rarelly ocations, some files. But with aswclear, nothing is missed, because it fully delete all avast info from the system.
Just download avast clean tool aswclear from the forum, and run it in safe mode, it will delete all avast info, and then after a reboot, you can proceed to a "fresh" install of Avast 5 in the version you want.( Note: You will need to Show.. Hidden Files & Folders )

i am changing my sig everyday. whats new or what i have seen i wrote it there just for a few min. and replaced it with the smily :)
