Title: Avast website down?
Post by: scythe944 on March 15, 2010, 04:50:26 PM
Anyone else having difficulties accessing the avast website?  Right now, it's 11:50AM EST for me, and I can't access it.

No I just accessed it after seeing your post, even for us mere mortals on dial-up, this post is 7 minutes after your post.

Yeah, it's weird.  I remoted into my dad's server and accessed it fine.  Checked my hosts file and proxy settings, all was ok.

The site finally did come up, but it's taking forever when I access it here.

Tracert shows a maximum of 77 ms on one of the hops.  Really strange.  The forum site works fine.

My tracert, shows only a few less hops, but longer durations.

My image file is also smaller ;D
Slight dig for those of us on dial-up and big images ;D

Sorry for the large pic David.  ;)

So, I see there are a few others that agree that it's either slow or down?

Thanks for the link logos.

lol.

When I used the downforeveryoneorjustme site, it said it was just me.  So, it looks like there's something going on, but it's not effecting all servers / routers.

Changing the file image type that you save it too on creation makes a large (pun intended) difference to the file size, .gif images are generally much smaller than .jpg and .png image file types for the same image. For the likes of forums or other web sites the .gif image quality is more than adequate (256 colours).

For me on dial-up slow is a way of life and generally I see no difference ;D

Well, I remember when they presented the new website, that they have a form of redirection to point visitors to the nearest server location.  Apparently for users outside of the US, their server is working fine (except India @sorry NMB!).  The one that I'm visiting must have a case of the mondays...

You know, I sat there at the "Save" screen for several seconds thinking that I should change it to gif.  But then I thought, it's mostly black but it has characters on it, and some degree of shading.  I figured saving it as a jpg would actually be smaller.  I guess I should have thought otherwise.

I know that sometimes when I save images that have a lot of detail as a gif, it's actually a lot larger than if I saved as jpg.  I just guessed this one wrong this time.

Oh well, I'll blame it on the meds that I'm on because I'm sick!  ;D
