Hi,
I installed the free Avast v5.0.462 on Monday 15th March. Installed fine. Quick scan found 3 viruses - now in chest. Still all fine as far as I could tell.
Stopped access to websites I knew were hacked - so pleased that it worked.
I use Windows XP pro SP3 and Outlook 2000.
PC has been working fine.
I noticed today that although mail shield is running nothing gets scanned. There were a few emails scanned on the Monday, but nothing since.
I checked in Outlook add-in manager and Avast is there and ticked. None of my email accounts use SSL.
I tried to enable scanning of archived emails but that made Outlook crash.
I tried inserting a note to clean emails but it didn't work.
Hope somebody can help - Avast seems quite good otherwise. I used CSAV before which uninstalled with no problems first, followed by a reboot to clean it out before installing Avast.
Cheers

The "problem" is with SSL. Since that is encrypting the mails, no av/mailscanner can scan them.
So there is nothing wrong and avast is working as it should.
-
But I don't use SSL ...
-
Sorry, my mistake. I read wrong. Thought you said that you where using SSL.
Try this.
- Disable the mail scanner entirely
- Reboot
- Enable the mail scanner
- Reboot
Let's see if that is changing things.
-
Thanks,
Will try that as soon as poss and report back.
:)
-
Ok, good luck. Let us know if it solved the problem or not.
-
OK - did that
Had to go out so switched off pc - on return I switched back on and checked for emails with mail shield running and not yet turned off and on.
I collected a few emails and then did the off and on thing rebooting each time.
All seems the same but I noticed that mail shield had checked one email when I fist switched on - out of about 5
So I checked the traffic stats and it seems that mail shield seems to pick and choose. A few seem to get scanned, most don't seem to. I first installed on Monday and it registers 6 on that day out of many more. None on Tuesday and I downloaded a lot - and about 6 today.
I have a few email accounts which Outlook collects from.
I have tried to match the scanned email numbers with each mail account but can see no connection.
Any ideas?
Fingers crossed

Bump
Anybody? Please :)
-
well, i don't use outlook, but maybe this helps...
in the avast mailscanner options i had to put in my servers manually, because the autodedection (by default) didn't work properly.
-
Thanks for that Asyn. I tried adding one of the email accounts into the expert settings - tried both the account name and the server name using port 110 but it hasn't worked I'm afraid.
Not sure I got the entries right but it's not looking promising.
Does avast list the email accounts it has detected anywhere?
Would welcome any other suggestions :)
-
yes, it does. but i'm using the german version, so maybe i can't really tell the menu items in english, but i try....
gui
realtime protection
mail protection?
advanced options?
ssl-accounts
please someone translate if this is wrong...
-
Perfectly clear Asyn :)
Well, I entered both the email account name and the server name - set boh to pop3 and port 110 with no encryption - rebooted ut still no emails are being scanned. I get the plugin screen when Outlook starts but it just doesn't work.
I suppose I really was asking if Avast had a log of the none ssl accounts it autodetects.
Can anyone help with this?
Does anyone else have the same problem?
-
well, sorry bout that - maybe someone using outlook can help...!
was just a try, since nobody answered...
good luck
-
Anybody else help?
Do Avast staff monitor these forums and help with problems?
-
i think they do, but they don't always answer.
as far as i experienced it's more of a user helps user forum...
but on some rare occasions the avast-staff gets active.
maybe you can try their support on the hp if you are a registered user?

One last hopeful bump?
Have logged the same thing on Avast's main site but no reply yet
:)
-
Hmmmm, strange problem. Especially since you see the shield starting.
In the avast settings > real time shields > mail shield > behavior > expert settings
What is marked in the outlook only section?
-
Hi Eddy,
Thanks for getting back to me :)
I don't see any mention of Outlook in the Expert settings. I have entered one of my mail account settings in the the ssl section, setting it to none in the encrypted dropdown. Makes no difference.
I have followed a few suggestions fro the support staff on the main site with no luck and I think they have given up as I have had no response from them in a couple of days.
Should I see Outlook listed somewhere in the expert settings? The splash screen appears when Outlook starts, it is enabled in the add-ins and mail shieldis running and creating a (empty) report. I have tried stopping mail sheild, rebooting and re-enabling it. I have deleted extend.dat, repairing Avast installation and rebooted.
Nothing helps so far.
All other shields work well. In fact it is very good at spotting hacked websites.
I do find it odd that it has checked a small number of emails - although none for a few days. Mind you, the last one it said it scanned I couldn't actually find a match for in my inbox.
I like Avast but I really would be happier if I could gt this working. Does the Avast add-in conflict witth any other add-in in outlook? I seem to have the google desktop search add-in installed.
Hope you can think of a remedy.

In the avast settings > real time shields > mail shield > expert settings > behavior
I mixed the last two :-)
And for the people aat Alwill, have a little patience. They will not forget you. They are just very busy after the release of version 5.
-
Hi Eddy,
Sorry - I found it - had seen this before 'cos at first when I selected "scan archived when opening" and tried to open an email Outlook crashed and closed.
It is now as I found it on install, both "scan attatchments when attaching" and show splash screen are selected. The remaining two regarding archived scanning are unselected.
-
In the general section everything is checked, right?
-
If you mean Main Settings - yes . Scan in, out and news all selected
-
No, I mean in the behavior section. Insert note etc. 4 options there, just above the outlook section
-
Top two weren't selected as default - bottom two are.
I did try select the top two and sent a clean message to myself but it didn't seem to work. I have now selected all 4 again. Sent myself an email but can see no difference no mention of avast in the headers either
-
Strange, let's try something different. start > control panel > software > avast > choose change/remove.
In the screen you will get, scroll down a bit and you will see repair. Choose that.
If it doesn't ask you when it is finished, reboot.
Than send yourself a email again.
Let's see if that changes anything.
-
Very strange.
Did as suggested, the staff suggested this as well. It never asks for reoot but did ayway. Still no emails showing scanned.
But, something I probably never noticed the first time I selected the insert note options - doing that wipes out the text of the message. I mostly just put a subject in with no message on test emails but received emails with no text including this forums' notification so ran a test.
With insert note selected Avast deletes the text of the email leaving an empty email, deselcting those options means I get the message.
Avast still reports no emails scanned - even though it does something to them.
Perhaps I shoukd use a different email client? ;)

didn't want 2 advice it in the first post, since people tend 2 stick to their sw, but if u couldn't get things fixed, maybe yes. think u could like thunderbird...

If I installed a new email client, would I need to reinstall Avast?
-
No need to reinstall avast. It should be picked up automaticly.
It seems that there is a problem with the email provider within avast.
I've seen more people having problems after going to version 5.
At this time, I would say wait for the people from Alwill to look at it.

no! and furthermore u get more flexibility & securitiy. i never ever would use outlook (even deinstalled it), since it's integrated in ur os and is always the first target to any malware of any kind...

Hello Asyn,
I have a somewhat similar problem. I run Windows XP, SP3. I use Outlook Express 6. My internet provider went into a integrated relationship with G Mail after which I can receive and send e-mail from OE and G Mail. Further I upgraded from Avast 4 Home (free) to Avast 5 Home/Professional (free) on monday last and I have noted that No e-mail is being scanned when I check the mail activity winddow, 0 mail is scanned although the icon on the task bar appears to indicate that avast is scanning the e-mails I have checked the forum and came up with this post and am asking for some assistance. Could it be that the avast 5 free does not scan e-mail as the avast 4 home did any more? Can you assist?
Thanking in advance.

What are your settings in OE6 for your Gmail account: POP3 or IMAP for Incoming?
Uncheck (meians disbale) SSL / TLS for both protocols: IMAP/POP3 and SMTP in OE6.
