Title: Avast Gets UNSECURED too often
Post by: riskpusher4life on March 18, 2010, 07:00:52 AM
I have been using avast for the past four years, and can personally say that i have recommended the migration of most of my friends...(numbering atleast a couple of hundred) and god knows how many people they recommended it too, being satisfied with it. ;D

My issue is, when Avast 5 came out, (long overdue) and had all the looks of being a champ, there are a few niggling issues with it that needs working out, for example, in my computer, after using avast for a few days straight, a big red "X" shows up on the icon, scrolling over it theres a message saying SYSTEM IS UNSECURED and it doesnt work anymore. I have tried reinstalling it like a dozen times, but to no avail.   :'(

I use, Spybot S and D, along with USB disk security 5, and recently been working with Immunet Protect for an additional layer of security. Windows XP pro, no firewall. P4 512 Mb ram, (browsers, Chrome, Opera). I do not understand this issue. Please someone help me out. Is this a known issue? What may be the problem?

Download the uninstall utility`s  http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

run the V5 remover and reboot
run the 4.8 remover and reboot
run " Eusing Free Registry Cleaner " fix all and reboot  http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
Install V5 again ....reboot......and pray...... ;D

and i would replace Spybot S&D with Malwarebytes  www.malwarebytes.org

I really appreciate the prompt reply and quality of your assistance but enlighten me on your reasons for dumping spybot S and D.

you could use a2 free - has no resident scanner and very good dedection rate.

Why dont we have an open discussion with quick points on a proper anti malware/spyware tool.... and please do not forget about the AVAST RED X  and the system unsecured.

Because Malwarebytes have way better detection and removal capability
If you go to websites like Geeks to Go or Bleeping computer where they are working with malware removal every day, you will see that the tool they always use is MBAM

Well, Pondus, thanks for all your assistance. Really appreciate it. But i do not wish to purchase the full version of it, how good is the lite version of the program compared to the Spybot? and how heavy is it on system resources? Does it have a resident scanner?

And already we're getting in trends for the poll in, early on, it seems MBAM has taken a sizeable lead, i wonder which planet i was marooned on, to not have used this software!  :)
Title: Re: Avast Gets UNSECURED too often

Spybot only detect and remove the easy stuff, MBAM removes the tuff stuff
The pro is a one time fee for a lifetime license.... ;)  then you get autoupdate, sheduled scan and protection module with IP block

Please enlighten me on what a llama is supposed to be...
I don`t know why it is there as defult, but i think it comes from this

Well, what if the user is not willing to, or not in a position to pay that lifetime license fee, then what would he resort to??

sorry bout that 2 all, couldn't resist...

but for your problem...
i use the same os without any problems, so it's bout your systems config or some installed sw.
maybe you dare to drop spybot? i experienced probs along w avast (but thats long ago, so maybe it's not your problem)
thanks 4 your poll.

SpyBot Search & Destroy should not be causing you problems.  See my signature.  I do use the immunizations of both Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster.  I've had only one problem with Avast5 early on with updates not working after a few days, and a Add/Remove programs | Repair promptly took care of it.

They're available.  The only two that are resident all the time are Avast5 and Sygate Firewall.  The rest are on demand.  Run too many security apps resident and watch your protection fall apart or at least slow your system to a crawl.  The rest are all on-demand and are only loaded and ran occasionally, (once a week or less often).

Maybe there's some type of an conflict between S&D resident protection and the new avast! 5.x version--it does have a new AV/AS and Heuristics engines.  Know in the past that  S&D had issuses with other security software e.g., BitDefender.

As to your "UNSECURED too often" problem, do not have anything help to offer.  I'm using custom install of AIS 5 on three Win XP SP3 systems and have not yet encountered what you're experiencing.

As to S&D, was a longtime S&D user until I started using BitDefeder 8 AV and had issues.  I dropped S&D and switched to SAS free, and purchase SAS Pro upgrade lifetime license for $19.95.

Reason why I dropped S&D is even back then it was falling behind the other spyware apps as to detection and removal.

Have not seen any recent new tests/reviews of the newer S&D 1.4 and 1.5.x versions that S&D did very well; e.g.:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2261193,00.asp

You can use SAS free for awhile, and will eventually get an opportunity to purchase a lifetime license for the Pro version for a reduced price.  I also have the paid version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.  If I'm going to use and rely on any software on a daily basis I'll purchase or provide a donation to support it.

Hence as to your Poll I selected "Combination": SAS Pro on-demand, and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware with the resident real-time protection.

As to your post "Well, what if the user is not willing to, or not in a position to pay that lifetime license fee, then what would he resort to??"
If not willing then its about time they learned TANSTAAFL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_ain%27t_no_such_thing_as_a_free_lunch)  ::)

If truly in a position that one cannot afford to pay $20 for lifetime license, guess they would have rely on using one of the free apps available or do without.  Though would think that most that have the means (i.e., PC and ISP) to use the internet would being be able to afford $20.  ;)

The immunizations should not cause any issues since it's just making entries to the installed browser(s) security/privacy settings, i.e., it's not an real-time resident running.

S&D's Tea Timer real-time resident protection should be the only item that may cause of problems with the real-time resident protection of another AV/AS app.

Hey im doing this as we speak, but you guys totally forgot about me using Immunet Protect as well. What do you have to say to that.
Title: Re: Avast Gets UNSECURED too often

Well, here is a little more detail on my case. When avast opens up, it says system is unsecured, in the summary and theres a "Fix Now" Button next to it. When I click it, nothing seems to happen, although ive noticed, a prominent label shows up saying "upgrade to AIS for 50% less".

The other information that is shown states, "The avast antivirus program has been stopped, or is in an inconsistent state, Please re-start the program to resume protecting your system. And theres a Start Program button next to it.

Then when i go into  the real time shields, the protection status is UNKNOWN. and when i try to start the shield again, It says, SHIELD UNREACHABLE.

When i attempt to start a scan, it says, Unable to start scan, THERE ARE NO MORE ENDPOINTS AVAILABLE FROM THE ENDPOINT MAPPER.

So, this is a real detailed look at whats wrong with the installation on my computer, as stated earlier, Avast is accompanied by Spybot S&D, Immunet Protect and USB Disk security. Windows XP Sp3 Pentium 4 512mb ram.

You are wrong.  The programs in my signature that are not resident load nothing that is resident.  I've checked thoroughly.  Of course, MSIE is always somewhat resident in Windows since it is embedded.

If you think that some parts of the others are resident, would you mind listing them?

Nothing there, at least from the non-resident programs in my signature.  With SuperAntispyware, when I installed it, I disabled it checking for updates which was the only part that stays resident.

Might be nothing. Ive dropped Spybot even though we've shared a long relationship. Its MBAM now. Everything seems okay right about now.

And do anyone of you guys know what Immunet Protect is? How it works? Is it any good??
Or should I post this as another topic as well???

So far, I believe this issue has been resolved. If there are any further issues that might creep up, (because it dies after a few days of installation, like all the other times. I hope it doesnt now!) I will keep all you guys Posted.

ok. i offer an opinion:
if you don't want to post your 'long version' don't post at all.
i and maybe others don't like to be redirected to any other site to be maybe more confused than before - most people - i think - use the forum to get answers from people, who already been there, did read it and are now knowing bout the problem, whatever it is....
