Title: Avast! 5 Pro and Floppy Drive Seek!?!?!?!?! (SOLVED:D:D:D:D)
Post by: steveoderocker on March 18, 2010, 10:43:14 AM
Hey, I have seem this topic on a few different posts on the avast forums but none of them with an answer.

So, the problem is that:

After installing avast! 5 pro on a clean install of windows xp pro sp3, when ever  I open "my computer", the floppy drive seeks or reads trying to find something, thus delaying the contents of the my computer screen to be view for about 2-3 seconds. And also, I have found out that this happens when  I open skype (latest version). This is very annoying and would like it fixed :D I have sent two tickets to avast! asking about this and both times, the tickets were merged with an old ticket I made last year after about 1 week of being posted and I haven't received any replys from avast support.

The reasons why i suspect avast 5 are:
1. It started happening about installing avast 5 pro on my fresh install of xp. I installed Xp, then sp3, then board drivers, then update, then avast 5
2. before format, using avast 4.8, everything was working fine :D
3. Quite a few people have been having this issue - but no solutions are available

Also, I don;t want to hear anything like "just disable it, you never use it" etc. Because I do use it sometimes and also, why should  I have to disable it? Also, on my laptop, i am running windows 7 ultimate with avast 5 free edition, and it works fine with a removable floppy drive.

I would really appreciate an answer to my query as  i really like avast and it's new interface :D

Thanx All!

Steve, could you please try downloading ProcMon http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx - have the tool running when you simulate the problem, and then either save and the log and upload it ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming) (we will analyze it) or search for any attempts to access the floppy drive volume (probably A: )...

Thanks

IF you do upload to the ftp site, use this one, as the forum adds http to the ftp links messing them up...

ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)

@Vlk,
You need to add the ftp tags (or another formatting option - like code- to stop this...)
[ftp]ftp//ftp.avast.com/incoming[/ftp]

I tried that and got "Could not locate remote server" using Opera 1010.  All I can say is I hope either (a) I never need to upload to Avast ftp because I have NEVER been able to get ftp to work on any browser nor have I ever been able to get FTP to work on standalone FTP applications, or (b) Avast would be amenable to my uploading the file to my Opera Unite file server and giving Avast the password to get it. I have never been able to use Avira ftp even with firefox FTP extensions intended to make it easier. Recently, I had a gigantic dump file for Avira beta techs and they were happy to let me put the file on my Opera Unite server. The tech grabbed it right away and even left me a thank you note on my Unite fridge! (This was before Avira beta techs got mad at me for saying I had put Avast on Vista machine...I have Avira still on one virtual machine and on my host XP machine ...just mentioning I am using both for now but on different machines).

I have had a very similar problem with Avira (three different times over the 3 years I have Avira) where suddenly the floppy drive is accessed by the real time scanner every 30 seconds. It is extremely irritating and can quickly wear out the floppy drive. So, I understand your frustration and I too got answers about just disable the floppy drive as who uses that now or put a floppy in the drive and it will stop accessing, etc. I do use the floppy drive some and why should I have to stop using it because of a bug in my antivirus program...so I understand your frustration. I hope Avast can figure out what is causing it and it gets fixed.

Hey everyone!

VLk: Thanx, I have uploaded my log onto the ftp server (with ie 8 and using explorer view, as Firefox doesnt let me do anything with the server) It is also zipped/RARed to compress it down to 3mb from 50mb :D <--Thankyou WinRAR! xD

Also, as you said to simulate the problem, I did this by opening and/or refreshing My Computer about 4-5 times and opening skype once. This all happened at 10:17 AEST (just incase you need to know for the logs)

Also, the only programs running in the background while I did this were: Avast!, MSN (which i forgot to exit :D), Firefox, Bittorrent DNA (which I have to disable) and a few other services.

If you have any questions, please post! :D

Thanx for all the help. And could you tell me if I did not upload the .RAR file, because windows says it's uploaded but FF does not show any files in the FTP site.

Thanx Again!

Steveoderocker :D

EDIT: SPG Scott - Soz, your link did not work, FYI. So, I just used the link VLK stated :D
Mele20 - Thanx! :D for understanding about the annoyance :D

Apologies, that is because I forgot a colon... ::)

ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)

I think it has to be done in IE...Once you open the site, you need to click 'page'--> 'Open FTP site in Windows Explorer', and then you should be able to drag and drop...

I got to the site using your corrected url but I can't see what I could do there using Opera (but I know nothing about FTP in Opera).  As for using IE that requires IE8. I have IE6 on XP Pro and have no intention of upgrading it. I almost never use IE so no need to upgrade it. I do have IE8 on a vista virtual machine and have tons of problems with it. It is basically unusable and I dislike it anyway. IE 6 is fine if you don't want tabbed browsing, but IE 7 and 8 are poor for tabbed browsing I think compared to Opera and Firefox. Anyhow, I would need to know how to do FTP for Avast using either Fx 1.5 which I still have on XP (yes I know it old but newer versions cannot use my favorite Fx extension) or Fx 3 I have on Vista virtual machine, or Opera 1010 which is my default browser on my virtual machines and on my host XP Pro machine.

I note that steveoderocker said it would not work on Fx which has been my experience. My point though is that Avast should not assume everyone has IE 8 or, even if they do, that they are willing to use it. This is why I made the comment that I hope Avast would do what Avira did and fetch the file from my Opera Unite file server. (I LOVE Opera Unite).  I will read up on Opera FTP though and see if I can figure out if Opera can be used at Avast FTP site. If I ask Opera for help about it they will just say to use Opera Unite as that is much easier than FTP.

It is not possible to upload with Fx...

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Accessing+FTP+servers?bl=n&s=ftp&as=q#Limitations

The transfer is actually an explorer job anyway...
You could try:

Quote
How to upload it using the Run command-line in Windows:
Windows Key + R (to get the run box), copy and paste explorer ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)
(without the quotes) and drag the file into the window, from another explorer window.

Or you will need an FTP client...

Hey Guys

Scott: Thats Okay! (about link) :D

I just tried reuploading the file because I have a feeling that it did not upload the first time. When ever I try to upload a file through the link you gave me scott, it keeps coming up with an error message : An error occured copying file to server. Make sure you have permissionto put files on server. Details: 200 switching to binary mode, 227, entering passive mode (91,213, 143, 4, 174, 118) 553 could not create file. THe numbers change for 227 entering passive mode.

So could some one let me know if it is on the server? And if not tell me another place I am able to upload it? I can upload it to a hosting site (I use box.net - seems good, i like it)

Thanx All

PS> Scott - I might download the FF extension FireZilla (i think thats it's name) and it's a FTP manager for FF :D

EDIT: On the IE page - Just to note, the instructions incorrectly state to go to page ->open... where it should be "view" -> open.... Just to let ya know :D Also, would a hijack this log be of any use to anyone? A few forums i've read some people have asked for a HJT log. Just asking. Thanx! :D

I had tried uploading something before, and if you upload it again, then you get an error.

The thing is though that the way it is set up is that you can't see what is there, so you only have write access, not read. This means that only Vlk, or someone else on the ALWIL Team will be able to tell.

If it didn't get there, then they will let you know :)

Had a look at filezilla...Looks much easier than using IE ;D

FireFTP extension for Firefox may be the one you are thinking about.  It adds uploading capability and drag-n-drop to upload/download from FTP servers.

Along with transferring your files quickly and efficiently, FireFTP also includes more advanced features such as: directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SFTP, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

Steve, I'm just looking at the ProcMon log and I have to say I'm a bit confused... what's going on is that the log is probably too big to make it possible for me to analyze it completely (manually).

The capturing was turned on for almost 3 minutes.

Do you think you could try it once more, maybe for just 5-10 seconds, just the time needed to simulate the problem? (pressing Ctrl+E in ProcMon turns capturing on and off, so you can use it to turn it on, switch to Explorer to simulate the problem, switch back to ProcMon and turn capturing off immediately).

Also, it would be very useful to close all applications (including background applications like Skype) as these generate unwanted noise in the logs.

Thanks
Vlk

@ Mele20

IE6 is very insecure and IE8 is the file manager in Windows Explorer and provides its GUI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Explorer

Try IE then enter C: in the address area that will open Windows Explorer to show the contents of the C: drive.

I do not have the problem of the real time scanner accessing the floppy all the time but I hear the floppy being accesed when I open My Computer in XP Pro but not on Windows 7 when I access Computer.

That is what I installed on Fx 3 on my Vista virtual machine because using IE 8 and Explorer (on an XP Pro virtual machine) did NOT work with Avira FTP site. FireFTP also, after repeated attempts and questions from me, and guidance from Avira users and Avira tech support, did NOT work. I then downloaded filezilla and that too I could not get to work. I spent a great deal of time and frustration trying to get all this to work. I knew nothing about FTP clients or using Explorer for FTP as I have NEVER had ANY reason in 12 years of computing to need to UPLOAD (download from FTP site yes) to FTP site until I got Avira. Avira learned that most users are like me with no experience with FTP uploading so
they now tell users to either upload the file to RapidShare or to use Opera Unite if they have that. I hope Avast considers doing the same. I do not want to mess with FTP uploading again. It was too frustrating and never worked and now that Opera has given us Unite there should be no need.

Guys,

1. please don't make this thread go off-topic. This is not a thread to discuss FTP uploads

2. You don't need to "mess with FTP uploading" -- the steps are easy:
- open My Computer
- in the address bar, type (or paste) ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming (ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming)
- drag'n'drop the file in question to that window

That's it, I don't know what the problem is.

Thanks for the logfile, interesting.
What are the volumes

D:\
F:\
G:\
H:\

? Are they hard drives? Removable? Etc... (maybe posting a screenshot of the My Computer window would be helpful).

Also, what does the Z-SANService service do? Does the problem happen even if you stop it?

Thanks

Post by: steveoderocker on March 22, 2010, 06:26:40 AM
Hey,

VLK: ok, attached is a screen shot of My Computer.
A:\ - is obviously the drive giving me trouble :(
C: = Boot Drive
D: = Storage/Internal Hard Drive
E: = DVD/RW
F: = Storage/Internal Hard Drive - Used as temp storage and "working drive" for apps like Photoshop and PowerDirector
G: + H: = External Hard Drive - Part of NAS - Netgeat SC101T -
http://kb.netgear.com/app/products/model/a_id/2538
http://www.cnet.com.au/netgear-storage-central-turbo-sc101t-339282464.htm
My Webcam
Z: = Virtual Drive c/o PowerISO

The reason why 3 internal HD's is that a while ago, maybe 2-3 years, I had some problems with my pc (before I used Avast) and Drives D and F were striped with each other (to make "one" drive). Anyways,  my north bridge had died then came along a new mobo. Me and a friend of mine, had some trouble re-striping it as the mainboard didn't want to do it and we didn't want to take any extreme approaches as in doing something that may format the drive. Anyway, we got the data off the drive on another pc and i've got these 2 extra's which do come in handy. D: is just storage and F: is mainly for temp data, and current working projects.  G and H are networked through my NAS + Router. So, yes, removable :D They also require the Z-San Service (Zetera) for Windows to recognize them (sooooo bad, i dislike this alot) as The NAS uses a different filing system (DATAPLOW_ZFS). This needs to be installed on each machine wanting to access the NAS through the router, but you can just share the drives in windows for the same effect :D
And yes, the problem persists when this service is stopped.

Also, quick q = Does Avast! or any components of Avast! load or become active while in safemode?

Thanx All!

Steveoderocker!
Title: Re: Avast! 5 Pro and Floppy Drive Seek!?!?!?!?!
Post by: Vlk on March 22, 2010, 09:57:43 AM
Hmm, I have to say I'm a bit lost at this moment. The ProcMon log doesn't indicate any requests targeted to A: at all - so I don't even know where they're coming from etc. It is very strange. So far, I have no idea what's causing the floppy drive to start spinning.

We may try a different approach. You said it started happening after installing avast. So, does the problem happen even if you stop all Real-time Shields? Or if you stop the "avast antivirus" service?

Also, quick q = Does Avast! or any components of Avast! load or become active while in safemode?

In plain Safe Mode, no. In "Safe Mode with Networking" yes, a few network related drivers (namely, the avast TDI filters) get loaded. Why? Is the problem happening even in Safe Mode?

Thanks
Vlk
Title: Re: Avast! 5 Pro and Floppy Drive Seek!?!?!?!?!
Post by: steveoderocker on March 22, 2010, 11:08:30 AM
Hey,

I was analyzing if the problem happens within safe-mode. I originally thought the problem also happened in safemode. These are my results.

SafeMode:
My Computer = No, no problems when I open My Computer
Skype = Yes (I just thought it would be notable if this was mentioned)

SafeMode with Networking:
My Computer: As Above
Skype: As Above

Also on logon/welcome screen, A:\ span about once or twice. Not sure for safemode though

Normal Logon with all Avast! Shields disabled:
My PC: As Above
Skype: As Above

On logon/welcome screen, A:\ spins about 7-8 times.

What other things can we try?  :-\ I'm willing to try pretty much everything as I really want this problem gone! This problem is really starting to confuse me now  :-\

Thanx All! :D

Yeah, I've tried disabling all shields, certain shields one by one, I've been through the settings for each shield (that has settings) countless times. There's one option, that scans floppy boot sectors when acessing but that is disabled by default. I've tried enabling/disabling  it and other options. And now I'm at a loss  :'(

Could it be anything to do with the drivers used? They are just generic Windows Drivers.

Thanx!

EDIT: I've also tried uninstalling all floppy drivers and Floppy controllers in Device Manager to no avail.

Hi Vlk don't know if you've seen my original post on this subject,
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=56006.msg473050#msg473050

but as I posted there I've tried:
In an effort to try and isolate the problem I’ve disabled all shields (same problem)
Uninstalled Avast but not rebooted (same problem)
Uninstalled Avast and allowed system to reboot (problem solved)
Reinstalled Avast just to see if problem behavior returns (yes it does)

So I would think that it since the problem still happens even after Avast is uninstalled (until rebooted anyway) that the looking at the sheilds as part of the problem is off base.
What does Avast leave modified and/or hooked into the system until rebooting even after it's been uninstalled?
I've checked with proc. monitor and can't find anything ???

Kinda hard to fix something you can't reproduce. Noone here was able to show that it's Avast accessing the drive in fact. I don't have any such issue on any of the boxes w/ floppy drive. (two of them are XP SP3, one's W7 x64).

@Logos

As I’ve stated before …. It is patently ridiculous for me to have to disable perfectly good hardware to remedy a faulty software design.  It’s much more likely that I will defend the victim rather than the offender.

To top it all off, yesterday morning, I saw a thread announcing that a new build had been released so; I downloaded and installed it hoping against hope, that the problem had been resolved. I re-enabled my floppy drive and opened Explorer and learned that the issue had not been addressed; Avast was still trying to protect me from my empty floppy drive and while doing so, delayed displaying my hard drive\folder structure.  I shut off my computer and went to work. Oh well, maybe next update; this is not an earth shattering problem, just an annoyance

Last night, I started my computer and, at the Welcome Screen, I was greeted with the message that my floppy drive had no disc in it  “Cancel – Retry – Continue” multiple times.  After closing that dialog box repeatedly, my machine finally completed its boot process.  This has happened on every reboot since.

Joy of joys, the developers DID address the issue and FLUBBED IT COMPLETELY making the issue even worse. Now, as an additional annoyance, I have to close quite a few useless announcements that I don’t have a disk in my floppy drive and I still have the original problem.

So what gives?  Did the developers err again ……. Or did my computer suddenly decide to let me know that my floppy drive was empty???

There are a few others having this same problem ....

Yeah, the first post:

Now though, after trying again, I have found out that Skype leaves a trail in ProcMon accessing the A:\ drive.

Second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth - nothing to prove that avast is causing the floppy access. So, for starters, if everyone there used that procmon thing to find out what's accessing the floppy, something could be figured out. So yeah, a few others are having this problem. So there are "a few others" on Avira forums and elsewhere.

I did not have any problems with the floppy drive with Avast free but since I updated to Avast Pro last week, I am now noticing that every time I access explorer or storage on
my 2nd hard drive, the floppy is being accessed.

It might be that Avast itself is not accessing the drive but causing something else to.   The easiest fix seems to be to disable the floppy for now.

Well, nothing except quite a few posters that chimed in during the course of those threads to say that the very same symptoms occured on their machines as soon as they started using Avast 5 and the symptoms disappeared once it was uninstalled.
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=56006.0 for one example, and my own experience for another.
I refuse to believe that this is just some bizarre coincidence. While it may not be irrefutable proof to you, it's good enough for me.

As was noted earlier in this thread, Vlk couldn't find where ProcMon showed that A:\ was accessed by Avast
Quote
The ProcMon log doesn't indicate any requests targeted to A: at all - so I don't even know where they're coming from etc. It is very strange. So far, I have no idea what's causing the floppy drive to start spinning.

I took that to mean that ProcMon didn't monitor the request ...... but, I may have misinterpreted his statement.

So, I have now created two ProcMon log files:

1. Accessing Explorer with the floppy drive enabled
2. Accessing Explorer with the floppy drive disabled

I will upload these to the FTP site post haste but, upon examing the logs, I couldn't see any indication of ProcMon logging that particular event either.

As a side note ..... this thread is about Avast not Avira ...... why bring them up?  I'm just trying to help abate an annoyance to many Avast users, not promote Avira.

Edit: Another poster having the same symptoms just chimed in while I was composing this post.  Coincidence???

Don't take this personally, but "chime in" with no more info than "me too" is essentially useless if the developers can't reproduce the issue. As is telling them to reproduce the issue by installing Avast.  ;D

And you've completely misunderstood that Avira point - go search their forums for "floppy"... yeah, same issue. Of course unsolved due to complete lack of information provided by the reporters.

only thing I can tell is when a couple of years ago I was running Avast 4 on XP, and there was a floppy drive there too ;D the drive was being accessed at boot time, generally during the login phase, I didn't care that much as I had that too with AVG before, and I could deactivate it I think if I wanted to...I can't test that now as that PC doesn't exist anymore, and my current system doesn't have a floppy drive. Doesn't un-checking the option for checking floppies change anything in the file system shield settings? (I suppose it doesn't otherwise this thread wouldn't have been started...).

No harm, no foul.  Your point is well taken; on the other hand, we’re not getting much of a response from the developers about the problem either.  Most of the threads concerning this issue have died a quite death with very few serious suggestions on how we might resolve it.

Sorry you think I misunderstood your reference to Avira, it’s just that I didn’t bring them up in any of my posts; thus the question as to why you did.
I’ll take your word for it that they have some of the same issue(s) as I have no interest in their product(s) or problems what so ever.
I realize that this is not a problem that stops the software from being effective and that the developers apparently have quite a few other problems to resolve but it does bother others so, lets stop the irrelevant rhetoric and concentrate on a resolution.

@Logos

I too ran 4.8 on XP for quite a while, however, I had no floppy access at boot or while trying to open Explorer like I do after upgrading to Avast 5 Pro. I believe this was due to the fact that could ‘deactivate’ it in 4.8.
I have added my floppy drive to every Exclusion list I could find in Avast 5 with no results.

Well, I recall those old BIOSes having something like "Report no FDD for Win95" kind of option... IIRC it prevented Windows from re-detecting the FDD on every reboot.

I see that you now have more than 20 posts which will permit you to update your profile to include signature information.

Go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then Signature: and put information about your system just like my signature about your system just like my signature so that the helpers can offer pertinent advice.

On my XP Pro system I see that the floppy drive is accessed with Winows Explorer but as there is no diskette in it and Windows Explorer opens fine.

Explorer opens 'fine' on my machine also ...... after a 5 - 7 second delay while the floppy drive grinds away.

Hey,

To whom this may concern (someone with the answer I hope):

All/most of the people on this thread have had this problem. Most of the posts are just people describing that they have this problem. Does anyone have the answer to this problem or can the developers try and figure it out before the release of the next build???????? :-\

It really is an annoying problem. And  as other people have mentioned, I shouldn't have to disable my working hardware for bugged software.

If someone could come up with a working solution for everyone here, that would be great! :D

Thanx All!

Guys,

while we're still unable to reproduce the issue, it strikes me that all the people who're experiencing this are using either the Pro AV or the IS. This can't be a coincidence.

I think that one of the modules that may be possibly responsible for this behavior is the Virtualization component (aka sandbox). Therefore, I'd like to ask you to uninstall this component for a while and see if that makes any difference. If it does, we can take it from there and dig a bit deeper.

To remove the component, please go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> avast! -> Change/Remove -> Change and uncheck the box that says (surprise surprise :) ) "Virtualization component".

Thanks much
Vlk

Bingo !!!
Worked for me ..... and cured the longer than usual boot times I've been experiencing as a side benefit !!

Thanks Vlk ......  but, be aware that I also had the P2P and the IM modules disabled previousily as I never engage in those types of activity. Just for your knowledge.

Hey All!

I am very happy today as MY PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED!!!!!!!! :D::D:D:D:D:D:D:D:DXDXDXDXD

Although, i do still have some followup questions:

A: After uninstalling the sandbox component, why do the settings for it still remain in the main UI allowing to be changed, and it still saying "run a process virtualized" ???
B: I have noticed that this problem still happens when Skype (4.X) is opened. Although, Skype has no delay while opening, so it is not really much of an issue.

Also, please correct me if I am wrong by making this assumption, though, it seems (nearly) everyone having this problem is using an Asus motherboard (anyone with it in their sig). I also use an Asus M2N-MX American Megatrends MoBo. Could that have any affect of Avast!?

Thank you for all your help users of the avast forums!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:DXD

If it is related to Asus Motherboards, you can check for driver updates for your board...

@steveoderocker

I'm making an assumption here but, here goes anyway:
Since you started this thread, I'm assuming that you have the option somehow\somewhere to change the title of it.
If you change the topic title to something like "Avast! 5 Pro and Floppy Drive Seek!?!?!?!?! SOLVED" then others, with a similar problem, will most likely read it and be able to remedy their own situation and hopefully 'chime in' with their results.

You might also add something like "Stay tuned for further developments from the devs".

Just a thought !!

I can't help with this ... after I uninstalled the Virtualization component ..... I no longer have the option to run a process virtualized nor any sandbox references in UI at all.
Maybe a reboot was needed??  I suspect so, as you haven't followed up for a couple of days.

There's a bug making it necessary for some people to uninstall virtualization component two times. Uninstall, reboot, uninstall.
