I am using the most current version of Avast 5.
There are check marks to include messages in incoming and outgoing emails.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled in addition to rebooting each time.
But I am still getting all question marks instead of the normal message of
avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean.

I submitted a ticket to Support at http://support.avast.com/
I am waiting for an answer.
You might want to do the same.
That way they will know that I am not the only one.

I did shortly after the update ticket ID# QSD-973252
it has gone to level 2 tech support
the first and the second said they have not heard of the problem
They have asked all the standard textbook tech generic questions.
So I replied to their last email with this post and the other one you linked to here in my email.
I am sure its a bug that seems to effect outlook 2002 and I refuse to upgrade to the new outlook one of the computers in our office has it and I dont like it.

@ jl747
Are you using the avast 5.0.462 version ?
I recall there was a fix in that for some Outlook related issue, I don't know if your problem was what was fixed.
-
I am using version 5.0.462
Virus Def 100324-1
My response from them says "This ticket was now assigned to our second-level technical support department. They will try to simulate the problem and find the solution. If they need some specific informations, they will contact you again."
Thanks DavidR for response.
If you can find a fix via this site that would be appreciated.
I did not find one when I did a search.
If not, I hope that Avast techs can find a fix for this problem.
-
my version 5.0.462
-
I guess we'll wait to see what they come up with.
They also said "Please keep on mind that the process may take some time (one week approximately, usually less), so please be patient. __ Best regards"
As long as it works and this is the only problem for now, I can wait.
-
It was more from memory that there were some fixes related to the Outlook, not specifically the same problem. Unfortunately since you have the latest avast version including said fixes, that this problem wasn't in that update.
-
Thanks for your help anyways.
I will post the answer as soon as I get one.
-
I had posted the same problem a while ago:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=56794.0
I also wrote to Avast's support, but never got a reply... so good to hear that you got one.
Also good to hear that also somebody else identified the same problem, I thought already it's only on my machine.
It had worked well on the previous avast5 version. And yes, there was a fix to an Outllok-problem, but this was related to a different subject - and probably the fix made it worse in other areas???
So let's wait and hope for a solution with the next update.
-
Went back to my support ticket and included this post to show that others are having same issue.
-
I received the following from tech support.
Hello,
thank you for your information, this issue should be solved on one of the another release. The solution is turn off avast! clean messages.
Best regards,
ALWIL Software a.s. support team
-
Thanks for the feedback, looks like they are still working on a resolution.
-
must be related to outlook xp or 2002 because this was resolved for outlook 2007 in the last update i have it working fine on both xp and vista 32 bit using outlook 2007
-
I am just going to wait until they come back with answer.

Just received the following message from Avast support.
Hi,
No option will will be only for clean. To infected messages is message about infection paste always.
Best regards,
ALWIL Software a.s. support team
No idea what they are talking about.
Still does not answer why the question marks and if it will be fixed.
-
Just tested the new (test-) version 5.0.499 with regards to the "question marks" instead of a message in outlook - issue is not solved, despite the received statement from the Alwil Support Team...
-
Just an update.
I just installed 5.0.499 and this problem is still there.
-
... and there is now even version 5.0.507 (not a pre-release but official release) and the problem remains...
-
Are you inserting a clean note into your emails ?
The reason I ask this is I'm sure I have seen something relating to this, but I don't know if it is exactly this. However, if you are inserting clean notes into your emails, try unchecking that option and see if it makes a difference.
-
@David
I am not sure what you mean by a "clean note" (not an infected one? yes - it can be any "clean" note in this sense), but what happens (since version 5.0462 - it did work before) is: Whenever you tick the boxes to insert a note directly into the email that the mail is "clean" (or infected), it ends up with the row of (mostly) question marks and a few other signs.
This thread is ongoing since version 5.0.462. A ticket was raised and confirmed, but no change of the issue over version 5.0.499, 5.0.504 or now 5.0.507.
It's not a big issue, as you do not necessarily needs these notes included in the emails, so you can tick the boxes off (anyhow the standard settings).
The issue only happens with Outlook - e.g. Thunderbird works fine.
-
In the mail shield, expert settings, Program Behaviour, General and it allows you to insert a note into clean messages (that is what I meant by insert a clean note), e.g. this message has been scanned by avast and is clean, etc.
So they are not inserted by default, So my comment is based on if you had changed the default settings and as a result caused this affect "question marks and a few other signs."
Yes, it is a bug if in enabling that option is causes a problem and hopefully they will get it sorted in the MS Outlook plug-in as this problem isn't in the standard Mail Shield when used on other email clients.
-
I have an open ticket with support.
I just posted the following at the support site.
Just updated to 5.0.507 and still the same.
Did a complete removal and reinstall with reboots in between.
Yes I have it checked to insert messages.
This is what is show up.
???????‡????????????????????????????????????????????????‰????????????????????????????????????????
-
Then as a work around until it does get resolved, try unchecking the insert messages and see if that works (personally I see little use in this, certainly for inbound emails).
-
Already removed check marks.
Will wait for a solution.
-
Just to confirm, with the check marks for the insert messages you don't get the question marks and other characters ?
-
Correct.
-
OK thanks, at least on the default settings this doesn't happen. I only ever used to insert a note in clean outbound messages to spread the word about avast.
Inbound messages are scanned and if you get one that is infected you will know about it, rather than rely on the insertion into clean emails.
-
I know.
-
just updated mine today 5.0.507 rechecked the insert clean message to out going mail did a test and....
????????????????????????????????????>??????????>????????????????????4????????????????????????????

Just got this reply from Tech Support
Hi,
Thank you for your information,
we will investigate and potentially issue should be fix in another release.
Best regards,
ALWIL Software a.s. support team
We shall see what happens next.
-
Just went back and forth with support.
This what they said and had me try
Hi,
could you try this workaround, please:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5
avast5.ini
create anywhere section [MailScanner]
and under this section
(add) key "UseAlternateRtfSyncing=1"
I tried what was suggested to no avail.
I am still getting the question marks.
I informed them and this was the reply.
Hi,
Unfortunately we have no more solution for you then turn off the clean-messages.
Best regards,
ALWIL Software a.s. support team

Go to PROFILE then Modify Profile then Forum Profile Information then Please select your country: then Signature: and put information about your system just like my signature about your system just like my signature so that the helpers can offer pertinent advice.
If it is good for DavidR an avast! Überevangelist then it is good information to have in your signature.

FYI
Upgraded to 5.0.533 still no fix to this problem.
Did a clean install used the Avast removal tool and did a reboot.
Rec'd this from Tech Support 5/5/2010
Hi, thank you for your information.
there is probably compatibility problem with Outlook XP (2002) this outlook is too old and we have no chance to fix it for it. Newest versions of outlook have no this issue.
