Title: Firewalls?
Post by: Yezinki on March 26, 2010, 10:35:15 AM
Hi there,

I have a few questions about Comdo 4 firewall.

1. Is it compatible with XP & Vista?
2. Is it a standalone or bundled with AV or IS?
3. How big a hogger is it on OS resources?
4. Is it a freeware or trial?
5. Any better options than Comodo?

Thanks!

1. Is it compatible with XP & Vista?
Yes.. But there are different versions for 32bit & 64bit.
32 bit   http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/xml_binaries/cis/cis_setup_x86.msi
64bit    http://download.comodo.com/cis/download/installs/xml_binaries/cis/cis_setup_x64.msi

2. Is it a standalone or bundled with AV or IS?
You get an option to install their AV, Toolbar and demo live support. Don't install those. Install firewall as standalone.

3. How big a hogger is it on OS resources?
It uses <10mb Memory & ~0 CPU in my 32bit vista machine.

4. Is it a freeware or trial?
It is free for home usage. But if you want live support, you will have to pay. Support from forum is free.
http://forums.comodo.com/

5. Any better options than Comodo?
Many users did not like Comodo because of its complexity. But v4 is much simpler to use and has sandbox facility. No other free firewall have these features. It is the most complete firewall with HIPS in my opinion. But you may try

sg09 what is sandbox facility.....does one really need it....I apologize about my ignorance, trying to learn machines at this age, when dementia has started to pop in.

Thanks again.

One more question hope it doesn't interfere /slow down internet speed?
Not at all....
sg09 what is sandbox facility.....does one really need it...
You can run an application, which you consider as insecure in Sandbox. Running in a sandbox means running in a virtual environment. Any change caused by the application will be erased after a reboot. So, for secure browsing you can use sandbox, so any browser hijack type things will not be permanent. For normal users it may not be worth, but it is necessary for security purpose...

Thanks sg09, Pondus & Yokenny,

Frankly speaking sandbox seems to be a bit complicated for an old person like me. Tried it once didn’t really get it. May be some research & reading might help.

Comdo vs. Outpost Free…….which is more versatile & effective as a Firewall, with minimal conflicts.

If want a simpler firewall with basic functions, I will suggest you to go for ZoneAlarm.
Among OutPost and Comodo, I think Outpost will be simpler, can't confirm 'coz I used Outpost a log time back . May be it has a learning mode unlike Comodo. But wail for others to comment on it.
One more thing if you turn of the Defence+ feature of Comodo it will be simpler..

1. yes
2: bundled but other modules can b disabled at install.
3. quickest i found (using only fw/d+)
4. freeware
5: not 4 me, right now (using 3.14 not 4.0!)

both r very good products!
comodo is much more flexible, if u know what to do. (should have quite a bit experience)
outpost, i would advice 2 users not that advanced, who don't need high felxibility (eg. only using browser & email)

yes. still there r different kinds of installers. choose as needed, if u want 2 use the 4.0 version.
i would not use the online installer. and would wait with v4.0, they just updated, but still some rogues can bypass cis. as 4 now i would advice v3.14 fw/d+ (with proactive security config) - don't 4get to stealth ur ports in the fw-section after installation...!!! good luck. :)

Whats d+??
d+ means defence+, which make Comodo leakproof. This is not the firewall part but the HIPS part.
I suggest you to use v4 because it is simpler to use and faster too. Sandbox will not bother you if you don't use. Leave it unused. I don't think there was a option to not install it...
It is a cool feature though. Let me make this clear to you. Suppose somebody sent you an unknown executable to you. You scanned it with your antivirus and find nothing. You can't be sure because new viruses are emerging time to time and no AV is perfect.  Now right click on the file and select 'run in comodo sandbox' and see what happens. If something weired happen and you will be confirmed that it is a virus then also no headache as you ran that in virtual environment. But if you find this as legitimate, next time run it normally. That's the use of sandbox.

No one mentioned this so here goes.

I use Vista's built-in firewall along with a program called Vista Firewall Control (free version) which can be found at:
http://www.sphinx-soft.com/Vista/

The program allows you to control outgoing connections. So far I've had it for almost year and I'm happy.

That's my two cents.

Yah I thought, I should post about it. It is actually a very basic one and can not be compared with Outpost/comodo/Private Firewall/PC Tools which have HIPS. Now a days ZoneAlarm has added some HIPS too...
But surely it is the most basic one.....

I told you comodo maybe troublesome. But no idea why such low score in leaktest. Leaktest suite does not contain any viruses. That is false positive.
But being without a firewall is not a good idea, atleast use windows default one.
you can give PC Tools a try... That is simpler to use.....
