hey i am making a tough decision here whether to use avast free or comodo av standalone or avast free with comodo defense+?

No tough decision, No contest, the avast antivirus is in a different league to comodo's AV.
Then you can choose any number of free firewalls, including what you suggested.
Many forum users are using these:
- PC Tools Firewall seems to have the least user headaches as it doesn't seem to be constantly asking the user questions about this and that.
- Online Armor for the most parts fine but it has caused some users grief after avast program updates and that is something you have to watch out for.

I highly doubt that you'll get any one on the avast! forum to tell you anything other than avast! is better even if that's a fact.
Try posting on the Comodo forum and you might get a different answer.

It is may be hard for some to tell, since Comodo AV only gets tested by Fanboys and others who make Videos or do limited cases with no real explanations, and Avast! lets all the world see how they are doing against the major AVs at places like AV Comparatives. Go look at Wilders, and see all the Comodo users there (or even look here) who say "I don't use the AV, of course, but am happy with the firewall and D+/HIPS". One of the Comodo mods posted at Wilders recently about not understanding why someone there tested the AV by itself, since he had never heard of anyone using it like that before-only as an accommodation to the firewall/HIPS. Defense+ is a HIPS, not an AV, so should run fine with most AVs and is reported to do that in most of the forums.

Mrizos' test of Comodo's Internet Security suite showed it stopped all 10 infections, including a fake AV, but I don't think I would use Comodo's antivirus unless it did good on AV-Comparatives, which has yet to test it. A review I saw of just Comodo's firewall with defense+ was also very good, so Avast! with just the firewall and defense+ seems like it would be good.
