Title: Registration for new download crashes - cannot register
Post by: Alinor on March 31, 2010, 06:58:51 PM
My first download of free Avast 4.8 has expired - I get a pop-up warning of the expiration, which remains on top of any window and cannot be moved.
I chose to renew the free version and received email with my license key.
But when I click on "insert license key", the application stops runnning == just continues to spin.  Eventually I have to shut it down with task manager, because it never opens the screen.

When I went to tech support to request help, my email was not recognized.  The email I entered was the one to which the license key was sent.

I'm stuck; can't registr, not recognized.  Have tried repeatedly over 24 hours, and the registration always requires shut down and restart.  But then I'm in the same position.

Any suggestions?

Download Avast5 free and install that, you do not need to uninstall the 4.8.

I'm in the same boat - 4.8 expiring tomorrow so I downloaded 5.0 and EVERYTHING has gone to hell since.

System grinds to a halt.  I restored to a day ago and now my PC Tools Firewall says something's buggy and of course, no antivirus.  I re-installed 5.0 and everything has grind to a halt again.  I can't register the product - it doesn't seem to do anything when I hit register.  Can't open Outlook.  I have another home-built computer that I'm using to explore this forum , so I don't have scans set to auto-run which slow the system.  It seems every process I have going needs permission to crawl another 16k forward

I have wasted six hours trying to figure this out - I am restoring to day-ago point again and getting rid of Avast I am FURIOUS

Restore system won't help on avast installation.

I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

I'm sad to hear about your troubles.
If you want to give it a new try, you may want to follow this steps: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57646.msg485911#msg485911
Oh, and add a reboot between step 5 and 6.

This should cure your problems. However, if you decide to switch to another av-product, please download the uninstaller for avast from my signature and run it to clear out all remains from avast in order to make sure that any other software will run without probs.

Good luck either way

Okay guys, thanks (Obrigado, Tech) for the help - You caught me before I hit the big red button.

I will try the uninstall tool, which I've seen in other posts.  I realize restoring doesn't "fix" the problem, it just gets me back to where I can function normally.

Also noted in the forums:
- Uninstall Ad-Aware?

I'm running PC Tools firewall
- any conflict with that or other Firewall/Spy/Malware utilities?

Is there a post somewhere of most compatible 3rd party utilities?  Note that I am operating on $0 and sadly can't pay for full-strength tools.

best,
jdj

Avast is a full strenght tool, normally.
I've heard that comodo firewall works great with avast, and malwarebytes antimalware free as on demand scanner too.

I don't see how I can download 5 if Avast isn't recognizing my email address.  A ny suggestions on that problem?

Why do you need an email address to download avast 5 free?

Download Avast5free: http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe

okay -

uninstalled previous versions of avast. reboot. installed version 5, reboot - but windows shows no antivirus in residence.  avast dialogue box says avast has been stopped and to click "here" to re-start.  Nothing happens - reboot.  nothing again.  I HAVE BEEN STUCK ALL DAY on this - I'd almost prefer a virus so I can throw the whole thing in the trash.

suggestions please

System:
mobo -Intel D8-45-PT
processor - Intel P4 1.5gig
memory - 512meg
OpSys - XP (SP3)

(sure the memory is light, but it didn't bother Avast V.4 - )

Go to add/remove programs, choose avast, and then choose "repair" (left side, scroll down).
That normally fixes it.
Reboot.

And BTW: thanks for sticking on...

I just had one guy get it running - after we removed 1 rootkit, 1 trojan, 2 rogue software from his PC... You sure your pc is clean?
Have you run Malwarebytes Antimalware?

Sorry fellas,  V.5 is now uninstalled - I just don't see my experience with v.5 pointing to a good future - I CAN NOT AFFORD to spend another day on this.

I restarted four times and ran win-update just in case even though I ran it this morning - nothing's budged - and yeah, I have a clean machine thanks to avast v.4, a couple other utilities, and good surfing habits.

I'm trying Avira - if it is equally difficult, maybe I'll come back after a memory upgrade and try it again.

My grateful thanks to you folks who posted here in an effort to help me out.  Best Wishes -jdj-

Ok, sorry to see you go.
Remember to use aswclear5.exe before installing Avira, just to make sure that there will be no remains of avast and interfere with avira.

I think you'll be back soon.  ::)

Good luck

Hei guys,
I've got it working.
I have tried to register it through the Avast's user interface several times before. I have had the same problem as well: When I press the 'Register for free licence' button, nothing happens! The button is inactive or "greyed out". I am on this forum because my trial was ending and I was looking for resolution.
But I've tried it once again today and it worked.
I did it with a built-in administrator user (not another user with administrator's privileges, the way I had tried before), and my Windows firewall was off (though I am sure it was off every time I had tried before).
I am running only windows XP sp 3 installed from scratch, there is no ANY other security software installed (in fact there is almost no other software at all, except the VLC player, Adobe flash player 10 Activex and the Quick time).
Apparently the issue was not due to a software compatibility problems.
Hope it helps.
Cheers
