Title: 192.168.0.1 internet shared connection not working for subnet?
Post by: nat1 on April 01, 2010, 05:52:53 AM
I loved my 4 version and got 5 after 3 year. I had nothing but problems getting my shared internet connection to work -- and yes, it is still not working.

Any suggestion  ???

No tech support from avast (I tried that with a ticket some days ago.)  :-X They must be working on getting the bugs out...

Also no info in any of the help files....

nat1,

There were some people who has a similar problems like you, please check another part of the forum. I don't know what exactly going on, since my avast 5 works fine by any networks (dial-up, LAN, Wifi all fine).

The forum here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57844.0;topicseen may give some clues for you.

Regards,
Cahya.

No, this did not help. It is true that I installed avast 5 internet sec. over avast 5 free. Avast 5 internet sec prompted me to first uninstall avast 5 free - which I did, and after that installed avast 5 internet sec. over it.

Also, my modem works fine. If I disable the firewall see the internet - but this cant be the answer  :-\

Hi nat1,

Did you uninstall avast using control panel or avast uninstaller: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Title: Re: did I just pay $$$ for a beta?
Post by: nat1 on April 04, 2010, 05:17:25 PM
Yes - did the uninstall and reinstall, but I still can not see the internet.

My problem is: I can ping my server internally just fine, which has the shared internet connection; so 192.168.0.3 is seeing 192.168.0.1 (my server with the internet connection) but 192.168.0.3 has no access to the internet (google.com)  :-\

I must mention here that I am hosting my own website and DNS server, but that should not make a difference.

I have been trying different settings, but nothing is working. ANY help would be very much appreciated as tech support is taking for ever to get back to me. :(

nat1,

I'm sorry, this would be outside my expertise. Lets wait other forum members give their opinion.

yes the problem appears with the connection - is inside NAT, is that correct?

I'm not sure about 0 in yr address - 192.168.0.1 - is this indicate no internet connection?

For now - have you tried netstat command, and also NSLOOKUP - run the ? after command for switch options

The 0 in 192.168.0.1 has nothing to do with it. Turing off the firewall in avast 5 and turning on the firewall in Win XP x64/2003 makes it works just fine. (This is standard. How to share an internet connection on LAN: http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-share-an-internet-connection-on-LAN (http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-share-an-internet-connection-on-LAN))

I REALLY NEED TO GET THIS TO WORK IN THE NEXT COUPLE DAYS.

Disabling Firewall in avast 5 and enabling it in Win will add five more line to the netstat output in system 192.168.0.3 (NOTE: this is when it works, and I can establish internet connection from my subnet - turning avast Firewall on is not letting me see the internet from my subnet)

One would think that clicking the "Internet Connection Sharing mode" inside the Firewall Policies would add these 4 lines  ???

Do I need to manually add these lines as Packet Rules? And if so how?

The link you gave is blocked by hostsfile  - 127.0.0.1  hubpages.com
I'm not sure why

Also win XP 64/2003 - not sure about this, but if workaround works and you are inside a firewall?

What about others you are sharing with? same problem?

Here is a basic article anyway

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/routers/g/192_168_0_1_def.htm

Quote
The IP address 192.168.0.1 is the default for certain home broadband routers, principally various D-Link and Netgear models. This address is set by the manufacturer at the factory, but you can change it at any time using the network router's administrative console.

Hi mkis

Thanks, I know how to set it up (read the post all the way through) - what I don't know is how to make it work in Avast 5.

Avast 5 Firewall is disabling my internal network setup!

HELP !!!    Please...

Title: Re: HELP!!! - 192.168.0.1 shared connection not working in subnet?
Post by: mkis on April 06, 2010, 06:13:22 PM
I only posted that article because yr link is being blocked by my hostsfile - 127.0.0.1  hubpages.com
- plus maybe some clues for you in the article anyway - try reading it all the way through

Unfortunately I am not there in front of yr computer(s)
- but firewall disabling an internal network is something I have not experienced anyway

Also windows XP 64 + firewall - if workaround works and you are inside a firewall? Surely that good enough for the interim
I have an XP64 computer here but unfortunately is not supported by my wireless modem - just one of those things  ???

You did turn yr Windows firewall off? And yr avast firewall is recognising the internet connection (router)?
Really, provide as much of the procedure that you followed when you set up yr avast module and registered through yr product key.

I just got this from Avast tech-support:

Quote
"This ticket was now assigned to our second-level technical support department. They will try to simulate the problem and find the solution. If they need some special information, they will contact you again.

Please keep in mind that the process may take some time (one week approximately, usually less), so please be patient."

To mkis's question:
Quote
And yr avast firewall is recognizing the internet connection (router)?

I am not too sure how avast would see this router. It is not an external box or so. I am using two connections - one for my internet and one for my subnet that goes to a hub from which I have many computers hocked up to.

Title: Re: HELP!!! - 192.168.0.1 shared connection not working in subnet?
Post by: mkis on April 06, 2010, 09:36:45 PM
yes I understand the setup. But I thought yr private network might have been inside NAT security.
Although I do all my work with home and personal computers, I am Comptia qualified in Network+.

The procedure for my firewall begins with avast reading the connection (screenshot below)

I hope this thread will continue since I am having a nearly identical problem.  I receive internet through an unsecured wireless connection, then share it with ICS to other computers in my local net.  As nat1 said, this gives me two networks: the wan set to medium level security and the local to home level insecurity.  The checkbox for ics is checked (from the start, I believe).
If I disable avast firewall, ICS works fine (Avast 5 internet security).  With it enabled, internet is fine on 192.168.0.1 (the machine doing the sharing) but absent on the subnet.  The Avast interface is very murky to me, and I have difficulty understanding which network is affected when I change settings.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Oh yes I see the problem dskoe
- did you notice that nat1 has avast team work to see if there is a solution to this problem

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=57922.msg490239#msg490239

the team will take note of yr post, or you could contact support like nat1 and make sure you provide link to this thread.

firewall is not murky on my simple wireless setup, but then yr connect would require special attention

Post by: dskoe on April 10, 2010, 03:44:15 AM
Thanks, mkis.  Yes, I was following the thread, that's why I posted.

I opened Avast briefly by creating a packet rule (I'm gonna display my ignorance...) called tcp opening all to 192.168.0.182 (address given to my laptop by ics) on port 80 in and out.  I got a successful tracert to my primary name provider through from the subnet.  Avast then crashed and wiped out my whole network setup on 192.168.0.1.  After I rebuilt it and got the internet back up it crashed again.
Now my internet is working again (only on 192.168.0.1) but that server will not supply subnet computers with dhcp.
This is my third effort in as many weeks to get Avast internet security working.  At least the anti-virus is good.  But the free edition works better and much easier.

ps I had to uninstall Avast and rebuild my network again before I could post this.

Hi dskoe.

Probably best not push things at the moment. I'm sure nat1 will reply the outcome to this thread.

WinPatrol is a program I have used at times when I have to turn a firewall off for some reason or other.
Is a system monitor that keeps an eye on important areas in yr system  http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

tech support suggested a reinstall (again) and to install the newest release 5.0.492 (again...)

After doing so I am now able to successfully crash avast each time I click on the "packet rules ..." button.  :)

The only workaround for now is to NOT use Avast 5 Firewall but use the Win Firewall

Try 5.0.499 instead (the latest). The UI crash upon entering the Packet Rules dialog was a known bug in the 492 beta.

Thanks Vlk - I just got the update running, and now my sub-net finds a internet connection YES! :) :) :) ; however, in order for it to work I need to set the Firewall setting (under Expert Settings) to ALLOW under "DEFAULT RULES". This is the only way it is working. Having the check box on or off, on "Internet Connection Sharing mode" makes no difference, and is not allowing a internet connection if the DEFAULT RULES is not set to ALLOW. (This sounds like a quick-fix and not a end-solution update on Avasts' part.)

Should or can I manually add the program that is in charge of the "Internet Connection Sharing" to the "Packet Rules?"  And if so -- what is the program that handles these calls?

One other thing that is not working is the "Show notifications about newly created 'allow' rules" and the "Show notifications about newly created 'block' rules" for sub-net calls. I assume that this is what would kick-in if "ALLOW" is set to "ASK" or "AUTO-DECIDE". I was hoping that I could find out what program is blocking the internet connection by having that set to ASK and by trying to get access to the internet from my sub-net, but that never did get a pop-up notifying me anything about my sub-net connection.

How does one get those later (beta?) versions?  I just downlaoded and installed the current ais; it's v. 5.0.462.
The software shown no version until it's installed.  This has the same name as the original download, but is a bit larger.

If you cannot use the previous Beta build 5.0.492 (now a release) to go to Beta 5.0.499 by simply invoking Update Program feature from the Maintenance tab in the avast GUI, then instead go to the following post, choose IS and load 5.0.499 over the top of the build that you now have.

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58183.0

Should be straightforward installation and with a bit of luck will recognise yr network setup.

oh here it is

hello Vlk

Try 5.0.499 instead (the latest). The UI crash upon entering the Packet Rules dialog was a known bug in the 492 beta.

I tried to installed 5.0.499 on a different system, but I am getting no-ware with it. See: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=58420.0

This is hurting Avasts' reputation - for what is left of it!

Internet Connection Sharing should now work, with "Internet Connection Sharing mode" checkbox checked. Sorry for the troubles, there was indeed quite a few bugs.
