Title: AVAST Shields disabled and won't start again
Post by: MTM104 on April 03, 2010, 05:23:49 PM
Something caused my AVAST shields to become disabled.  I can't enable the shields and I can't update program or virus signatures.  Message I get is "Failed to Update.  the Avast service is not running".  when I click enable all shields nothing happens.

Some users are experiencing this trouble recently... I still not sure what is wrong.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

Hi this is kind of an old topic but maybe it might help someone anyway. I had the same problems with avast 5x and couldn't understand why sometimes on reboot it would stop and not start again....so I went to services to start it and got a message that sometimes programs that are not in use by other programs start and stop again.  So I thought to start my internet connection and web browser and lo and behold avast began to run.  Specifically what worked for me was to go to the summary page and click fix on avast and then start program and then two start internet applications.  Maybe this is a resource saving feature or something haven't noticed it before a week ago.  Perhaps stopping all internet applications including disconnecting from the internet before restarting avast in both avast in services before restarting may help.  best of luck
