people keeps asking me about my system, or keeps on telling me the same thing over again, but nothing is working! avast is doing the same thing on my dell 1525 laptop!!!
avast software makes my internet stops working sometimes, also freezes my PC, and slows down my internet.
yellow warning icon shows up next to the avast icon PC is Unsecured click on "FIX NOW", i do that, it stay for a few minutes or a few hours and then goes off again.
i did everything avast support told me too like showed them the registry, download the unity program, f8, safe mode, and nothing made a difference!!! it still isn't working right!!!!!!!!

As you wish... ;)
Nevertheless you should update your OS, first...!!
If you have troubles with windows/microsoft update you can use this link for downloading...

@Asyn,
I guess its not a os related issue. I too had problems with both win 7 and xp sp3. Same avast service could not start problem. So I have temporarily switched back to version 4. Will get back to it later.
btw, its good to keep the system updated.

I like to go step by step... and this was the first step to go, imo. ;)
And yes, it's really a good idea to keep the system updated, as exploits could bypass the best security, if there are holes in the OS. And also software could have problems running on an outdates OS.

Build from scratch.
1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear5.exe) and save it.
2. Download the avast! 4.8.1368 (http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/download/0f979e616278c289d424f6d78ac153a9/) and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Check and post the results.

I'm using
Immunet Protect MSE on XP sp3 32bit till avast! 5 is fixed.
ZoneAlarm Pro is working great with MSE! 8)

Hmm,
Windows defender is some kind of antivirus you should remove this before putting avast 5 on. Did your dell original restore cd have a bundled antivirus on it? and put this on your root drive?. In the uk DELL ship & Install macafee or symantec/nortons. REMOVE THESE AT ALL COSTS BEFORE PUTTING AVAST ON WITH THEIR REMOVAL TOOLS!?

We never got to this step, as he/she gave up before...
But you're absolutely right!! :)
-
i gave up on avast 5, and have gone back to avast 4.8, and it works right again!! I won't be upgrading again for long time!!
-
Good that avast 4 is working. :) Keep it on for one more month, and switch back to avast 5. By that time, everything will be alright. :-\

I have downloaded Avast Internet Security for 3 computers and installed with the license on two computers sucessfully. The third computer just does not work when AIS is installed?? If I uninstall it the computer works fine... Does anyone know why this would happen?

bobo1,
just some info
Windows defender is not some kind of antivirus and does not interfere with Avast 5 or Avast 4.8 for that matter, Its perfectly happy running side by side with either Avast versions.
Im sure if you look at peoples signatures you'll see it being used from time to time.
Im surprised YoKenny didnt see your post~grins~

Each computer system is as different as the 100 Million users of avast! so providing information about the system that avast! does not work on would help fix the problem.

Hi
I don't like Windows vista, certain is is something that was bundled with the dell computer could be causing trouble old antivirus (drivers etc in system 32 folder) if 4.8 is running ok so use it but updates for this will soon stop.
I use Windows xp sp3 and fully updated and avast 5 has worked ok for me when it first came out. Just minor update problems first of all

bobo1 has not figured out how to update their profile yet and DavidR an avast! Ăśberevangelist recommends having system information in the siganture to help diagnose situations.

i used 4.8 for a long time without any problems, but i decided to get the new 5.0 and it run fine for a while. but 3 weeks ago it's stopped working, cant do anything with it so i tried to uninstall 5.0 run the removal program(no problems with that) and install 4.8 again but that stops running too after a while(1 day)
5.0 says when i try to turn it on : error File System Shield provider not found
4.8 says: something about aavm, cant remeber what exactly

I suggest an installation from the scratch:
1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility (http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html) and save it.
2. Download the latest avast! (http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html) version and save it.
3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can't run it, try booting in Safe Mode (http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml) and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you've run it.
5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
7. Check and post the results.

hi,
newbie here. to this forum anyway :)
this thread seems most appropriate, so...
i've installed avast 5 on 3 pc's. 2 for friends, 1 on my sons.
all 3 running different os'es.
windows 7, vista and xp.
all 3 stopped working. "your system is not secure" "fix now" "service has been stopped" etc
uninstalled all 3, and reinstalled.
2 friends copies seem to be still working. haven't heard otherwise so far.
however, son's has stopped working again. xp version. and it was password protected so he couldn't turn it off (he's 15)
any ideas? or can someone point me in the direction of a thread that answers this :)
