Title: Avast 5.0.507
Post by: Zaffy on April 18, 2010, 09:08:58 PM
I usually get someone to update my free Avast antivirus.
This year I decided to do it.
Initially it appeared to work.  The icon changed from blue to orange and the pop-up message telling me the antivirus is working changed in appearance.
However, I keep getting messages that my license is about to run out in
17 days/16 days/15 days.
Can anybody help.

PS.  It took me 15 minutes to work out how to post a thread.  I could not find the page where it said start new thread.  Also, after I first typed out this message, I decided to use the spell check option.  I clicked it and my message disappeared.

So you see, I am not hot on computers.  Please keep guidance simple.
thank you.

Hello Zaffy, welcome to the forum.

I assume you just have to insert a licence key which you can get mailed to you for free if you register at the Avast website.

Is valid for a year or so. Normal procedure to be able to use Avast Free.

Or do you see a 'BUY' button in the user interface?  If so I guess you are using Pro version and not Free.

It's up to you.  You buy Pro or Internet Suite, or you uninstall and download and install the Free version.  (For which you then have to get this licence key to insert, via registration on the website)

You should be able to update your license from the GUI.

We might have to consider the possibility that although Zaffy is online, he might be clicking away furiously on another forum trying to find the ****** forum topic

Having problems on how to reply to messages.  I clicked quote, it seems to have done the trick.
Please could you tell me what the GUI asyn is?
Thank you

Hi Zaffy, GUI for Graphical User Interface, or in other words: the screen you see as a user (of the Avast software)

Reply by using the 'reply' button on the bottom of the forum page.

Is there a button 'BUY' in the Avast screens? If so, it can be used to renew your licence. Apparently you have a Pro version which is about to expire.

If not, you might be running the Free version; and it urges you to insert the (free) licence code you can get by registering at the Avast.com website.

Please could you tell me what the GUI asyn is?
Thank you

GUI = Graphical User Interface
If you right click on the avast icon and choose the first line, the gui will open.

Edit for info - @anothermack: I leave Zaffy to your advice. ;) Thanks.
Edit #2: He/She is using the free version.

Thank you for helping.  I don't know what I did but somehow I have managed to update it properly this time.

I have another concern though. I went into my profile and there I saw for the whole world to see my email adress.  Surely this is wrong.  I have now clicked hide email, but when I click profile I can still see my email.  How do I know if I am the only person that can see it.  I am terribly worried.  I would like not to be a member and have my details removed please.
Please can you tell me how to unsubscribe to this forum.
Again thank you for your help.

Hi!!

You don't need to unsuscribe from the forum.

If I go to your profile it says:

Email:    Hidden

Don't Worry you're the only one that can see your email...  ;)

Greetings  ;D

Thank you, I was in a mad panic here.

I didn't know I had to click the hide email box.

When I checked my profile, after about two hours of becoming a member, I immediatly ticked the box but I could still see it.

Phew.  I wonder if it might be a good idea to have the tick the other way around, tick if you want to show your email, it might be safer.

Thanks again.

Only yourself and moderators can see your email address, it is hidden in posts, see image.

It is also hidden in your profile as Light Archangel said.

Do you mean the parachutes. Nothing happens.
However, if you mean the little head and shoulders icon, yes I can click that and see your profile.

Now my problem is, my little head and shoulders icon has an envelope by it and if you click it an email page comes up.

I am very worried.

I do not want to have my email on display.

I also did not want to post this publicly but apparantly I have to send 20 messages before I can do this.

I am fed up with the whole thing.  I joined this forum for security and I am now vulnerable.  I do not know how to get rid of the envelope.

The image is in the text of his reply.  Click on the thumbnail image and it enlarges.

We cannot see your email address, just as you cannot see mine.  We all can see our own email address in our profile information, but others see "hidden".

Can you see the small head and shoulders icon at the left side of this post?
Next to it is an envelope for anyone to click on and send me an email.
You do not have an envelope at the side of your little person icon but I do.

Hi Zaffy

The best way to check what the general public can see of yr account is to come to the forum but dont log in, then go search for yrself on the forum - for example, search for this topic we are now on - and then have a good look for yrself at Zaffy.

If something you do not like, then log in and make changes to yr profile - we can help you make those changes.

Edit - that envelope is for internal mail - mailing each other inside this forum - we call PM (personal messages)

Thank you, but nobody else has that envelope with their email address on it.
Can you tell me what an internal email is please?

Everyone else has one, but 'you' can't see their envelope (email address) and they equally can't see yours.

The IM icon is a personal message 'internal communication' between forum members, you can't use that function until you have 20 posts.

Thank you for your patience, but now I am totally confused.
When I click my envelope, in the TO: line it has my email address.
Why would I want to send myself an internal message?

What else do you think it would do all it is is a mailto link (hover your mouse over the icon). That is what the mailto link does it creates an email with the email address in the To address of the email in the mailto link.

You don't want to send your self an email, who does, but no one else can send you an email either as for them the icon isn't there. The only others who can see it are the moderators, if they need to contact you for any reason, then they need access to that icon so it is displayed.

Because 'you' have access to your own profile, then you too can see it.

I can't tell if you are going mad, as I can't see through your eyes, but it is there. Here is a direct link to it, http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=58713.0;attach=46832;image (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=58713.0;attach=46832;image).
