Title: AIM
Post by: swtlyevil on May 02, 2010, 12:37:50 AM
I installed the latest version of AVAST Free Home Edition.  Now I can't run AOL Instant Messenger at all.  I even turned off the scanner to try opening it.  That didn't work.  I tried reinstalling it and that didn't work either.  Can someone let me know how to use AIM now?  The quicker the better.  Thank you.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet and check your AOHell IM, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

I had to remove Avast 4.8 and upgrade to the new 5.0.  I did not have any issues with aim prior to the installation of 5.0.

I will check the settings you mentioned and let you know.  TYVM.

You're welcome, hopefully it is just the firewall blocking the new elements in avast 5.0. You didn't say which firewall you are using.

I am using the firewall that came with Vista Basic.  So just the windows firewall.  I don't think the firewall is affecting avast because it isn't in the list to be added or blocked.

I've tried turning off the firewall and avast completely long enough to try to open AIM and that did not work.

Any other ideas?

Well the Vista firewall doesn't have outbound protection enabled by default, so if you haven't enabled outbound protection (which I feel is essential) then it shouldn't be an issue.

My only other concern is AIM and if it is supported (I don't use the Instant Messaging shield as I don't use IM applications), that however shouldn't stop it from opening or running at all as your opening post stated "I even turned off the scanner to try opening it.  That didn't work."

So to me there appears to be some sort of conflict going on if it won't open at all.

Are you using avast free antivirus version 5.0.507 ?
