Title: *** INTRODUCING: New pre-release build of avast [NOW 5.0.542] ***
Post by: Vlk on May 02, 2010, 02:06:14 PM
The program update has now been officially released as 5.0.545. Details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=59408.
Thanks to everyone who helped testing.

Hi *,

we'll soon be releasing a new build of avast 5 Free/Pro/IS. As usual, we're making the build available for public testing before it's officially released (so far the version number is 5.0.542).

How to get it
Free AV: links removed
Pro AV: links removed
Internet Security: links removed

How to install it
Just run the setup executable (links above). You can either install it from scratch, or on top of an existing avast installation (installing over both 5.0.xxx or 4.8.yyy should be fine). A reboot will be required to complete the installation.

You can also directly update to this build from the previous beta (5.0.533) by simply invoking the program update feature.

What's new
Most notable improvements include:
•   Solved a bug related to submission of false positives
•   Improvements in the Behavior Shield (realtime antirootkit part)
•   Sandbox: many functional, stability and performance improvements
•   Firewall: VPN compatibility fixes (should now work even in Public zone etc)
•   Firewall: solved an issue related to hang and/or crash of the afwServ.exe process
•   Finally compatible with major screen readers
•   Various fixes in the Outlook antispam add-in
•   Right-to-left support
•   Added Croatian and Arabic language packs

Thanks much
Vlk

I'm downloading it now...you didn't mention the firewall log crowded with tens of irrelevant blocked connections entries (irrelevant entries because these connections do exist, they are not blocked at all, and they don't have to, it's just the log messing around, I've mentioned it a few times)

launching an application (IE or Firefox or anything else) set to be always virtualized still taking ages, randomly (it starts sometimes normally), while launching the same app virtualized (the "once" way) always works fine. So this is not fixed. But I already transmitted many dump files and logs already, and it seems the issue wasn't identified...can't tell if that's just on my system.

You won't see anything in the change logs as this isn't officially released to all users, but is a pre-release version as stated in the first post.

So you need to check that post for the various changes included in this pre-release build, unless that is what you were referring to.

Save avast! 5 download (http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/) & avast! 5 uninstall tool  (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) to desktop.

Run avast! 5 uninstall tool in safe mode, reboot twice.

Boot into safe mode with networking & install avast! 5, reboot.

Worked for me & others.

I'm very happy to be back with avast! 5 Free on XP sp3, 32bit.

I never had a problem with avast! 5 free on 7 64bit.

RD,
Followed the instructions you posted. Everything is working fine !!! Only had to re-register. I've been a user since V:2. 1st time I ever had a problem other than the big "false positive" debacle some months back. Kudos !!!!!!!!!!!! No conflict with Zone Alarm or any of the other protection programs I use.

firzen771,

Maybe if you follow the instructions to install avast! 5 in safe mode your WebShield may work. ;)

No, because it isn't just a simple update from the current regular build. You have to download the complete installation file at 47.7MB is way to big on dial-up. This would take between 2Hrs 45mins to 3hrs 10mins, so I will have to wait for the regular release through incremental update in the UI.

RESOLVED--Just Tested, works fine, and Tested mail shield again, also working fine

Does this build solve the problem i'm having with browsing Website forums?  tested on friends laptop with Microsoft Security Essentials installed on hers, and it loaded right into, and i was able to browse and read the forum.

With Avast 5.0 Free in this PC, it always freezes on that forum, on this pc, and second PC as well--both PC's are clean installs.

Anyways gonna install this new build when i get a chance, and i'll report back if it solved the issue i mentioned or not in previous builds

PC Specs are as follows

Avast Antivirus
Super Antispyware Free Edtion
Windows Vista 32bit
4gbs of ram
160gb master hard drive
500gb slave
Network adapter Nvidia Onboard 10/100/1000

Programs Installed

Applications:  Open Office 3.2.0, AIM, Yahoo, Windows Live Messenger/Essentials Suite--(Writer, WIndows Live Mail, and Movie Maker, and Photo Gallery), HP All in one printer software, IE 8.0 Browser of choice on all PC's here, Super Antispyware Free Editon on all PC's, SAM Broadcsater, Mysql Server, Macirum Reflect, Skype

Games:  Second Life, Gears of War, Steam Games(Counter strike source, half life 2(half life 2, episode one and two, lost coast) Call of Duty Modern Warefare 2.   Tinker For Games for WIndows live

(Clean install about 2 weeks ago now)

Forum trying to browse is neowin.net/forums, then internet, network and security area

Any other info needed, just let me know

Thanks
Keep up the good work Alwil Team

Removed 507 completely, rebooted and installed 533. Now the Mail Shield refuses to start. Clicking on 'Start' in the UI does nothing. If I try and start the service manually in services.msc it fails to start. Event viewer says:

The aswRdr service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

aswRdr.sys exists in c:\windows\system32\drivers.

Tried uninstalling, rebooting, running the standalone removal tool, rebooting and reinstalling but have the same problem.

Any ideas?

Before I try again I want to thank all of you for your ideas. Just to make sure I do it right here is my info

purchased may 1, 2020
300340038e avast! Internet Security 5.0
The file link sent to me downloaded File Version 5.0.418.0.
I'm not sure now if after putting in my key if it updated to a newer version or not?
So it someone has a link to the newest version of  Item # 300340038e  avast! Internet Security 5.0 retail, not free version, I'll install it and try again. Still no reply from my filed request for help from Avast.
The issue is  no, or limited wireless internet connection using XP SP3 and the purchased Avast, free OK. The free is V 5.0.507
Each time I test and fail I have to re regester to use the free version again so I want to be ready to make this work .
Thank you

OK Red, I'll make time to try it all again.
I guess I just install it and it will find the newest version?
I'll be on a business trip for the next few weeks and may wait until I get back to try it since everything is working as before with the free version for now. I'll back up this laptop just in case the free version lets something get through. I'll be reading the post while I'm away. Maybe waiting a few weeks will give Avast more time to post more fixes? I'm reading there are some issues to work out yet. Too bad I jumped in just as a new version was posted. I had no real reason, just wanted to own a retail version with more security then the free one. As they say, do you want it in the head or gut, I'm still deciding.
I do like the product and want it to work for me, so I'll do my best to make it work.

see screen shot, three bugs in the same section:
1 radio buttons aren't active (allow all, block..., allow certain)
2 executable path is being preceded with non-standard characters where reopening the panel (they already appeared before adding anything)
3 impossible to delete an additional app, it's back when reopening the panel.

Seems an uninstall, clean with the Avast removal tool, reboot in safe mode, then remove c:\program files\alwil, another reboot and reinstall has fixed this problem.

application column empty? local port empty? local address empty?

edit:

Logos, I am afraid I can not help you from the description you have given. Avast by default definitely does not block akamai IP range. So if there is a problem there might be some bug which depends on your configuration - by which I mean config.xml and rules.xml files. Also, the more details about the log you specify, the more possible it is that we will guess which component is giving you the trouble.

local address was obviously my internal IP, local port in the high range (above 60000), no application specified... I just guessed from the log entry and the system behavior that akamai was really blocked. This said the log is still crowded with tens and tens of entries about supposed to be blocked connections. This has been happening constantly in a recent past and I already transmitted my log files to you through mail not long ago. The situation isn't different now, and I read on the forums that others were having the same mess in the log. But okay, I'm sending you the files you requested through mail.

when alt button is pressed and released, button's tooltip shown. But it won't off when mouse click on interface, or minimize to tray icon and maximize it back.

Some other application like Microsoft Office, tooltip will off for those cases. Is this by design?

I did a clean install of build 533 and encountered some errors:

1.  Downloaded cleanly, but thought it was a trial version only despite putting in a valid Key.

2.  Would not let me update definitions because it thought I did not have a valid key.

Uninstalled and installed build 507.  Then upgraded to 533 without problems other than having difficulty upgrading definitions, which I understand everyone is trying to do so things are a bit busy.  Able to use all scanners fine.

Avast needs to fix the bug for a clean install of 533.  Upgrading works fine.  Nice job :-)

1. this is because there's a special plugin for Outlook that's doing this. It is impossible to do it at protocol level (where most of the Mail Shield / Antispam scanning is taking place)

2. why would it be completely useless? You just have to create a rule in TB to move all emails with the subject tag to your folder of choice.

Thanks

that's a cool and simple idea and I really shame myself for not having thought about it  :-[ , especially considering I've been "playing" with filters in Thunderbird during the last few days  ::) I deactivated AIS spam filter a while ago and didn't look back really. Okay Vlk, thanks for posting that obvious tip ;)
This said, I still have a problem with that, once a mail has been marked as spam by Avast, and it was a mistake, there's no way to undo that, i.e. undo what's been added to the subject line of the mail. When that happened here a while ago, I found that the only way out was to re-download the mail (this now tagged subject line doesn't synchronize itself in IMAP fortunately). Is there another way to un-tag if needed, directly in the client?

edit: filtering with the Avast subject tag doesn't work :'( ... the avast spam tag is seen in the subject line when opening a mail marked as such, it does appear in the message source, but it doesn't appear in the mail entry subject line in the list of mails, explaining why the tag doesn't synch in IMAP probably (in the Gmail interface, the message source doesn't synch either obviously). The Avast spam tag must be added after the mail has been received by the client...and anyway, even running the filter manually after that doesn't work.

edit: just for info, moving a mail marked as spam by avast to a local folder, then back to the imap folder where it came from, then rebuilding the index if that imap folder let the avast spam tag appear in the subject line in the mail list too, and then the filter works, but in these conditions ;D

edit: the avast spam tag seems to be added only at local level, just like the mail shield inserted note that never synches either in IMAP.

I think you misunderstood, it's restricted to local storage >>> once inserted, the tag doesn't synch with other email clients in IMAP mode; no big deal, except this also means that even for the client where it was inserted, it doesn't really exist >>> mail list entries remain untouched and local filters don't see the tag.

When avast does an automatic update, when we open avast use inteface and go to update tab no progress is displayed there(update tab and auto updating are not in sync)..
Better to display the update progress even during auto update when we open the update tab and have proper synchro b/w those two...
and an option to schedule updates at particular time would be very useful.

i hope im posting in the proper thread,if not pls redirect me :D

new option in virtualization (542): only one out of three settings active for internet access :) (like in 533) >>> restricted permissions (screen shot). Funny as I can still access the internet with tweetdeck virtualized. Other settings still not available (allow all, allow none). May be there's just a UI atm...
Another thing, I can't get rid of a process appearing in the virtualization list ::) (audiodg.exe). Was probably depending on another main process being virtualized but this one seems sticky ;D >>> it's still there when I got nothing running virtualized (I stopped it from task manager).

uhh, could you please rephrase that, please? I'm not sure if you complain to GUI or to internet access restrictions functionality. Here I can set all three radio buttons and if I click OK, the settings is saved and my virtualized browsers reflect the changes.

as for audiodg.exe -- this is a compatibility issue, in fact, this process is really executed from web browsers and it's still running even you exit your web browser... I'll try to fix it...

No, it shouldn't be released until it is ready, there is obviously still work in progress as pre-release build 542 has now been made available.

The last thing anyone wants (certainly me) is to release something too early as in this case there would have been 533 released followed shortly by the next stable pre-release. For me .507 is working just fine.

the are at least a couple of new settings in the sandbox section (see my last posts here)...okay I think they're working at improving many things in the background (see Vlk's first post in this thread), and we shouldn't expect big changes in the interface before 5.1.
