First let me say welcome to the forum. First let me say NAV has missed major viruses when it was installed on my system. I didn't even know I was infected until I swithced to avast! 4 Home Edition. It picked up five viruses on my system that Norton never alerted me to. When I spoke with a senior support tech at Symantec. He told me that sometimes when it repairs files that have been affected by viruses it leaves part of the viral code behind so the file is still viable. I told him this isn't virus removal. This was my personal experience. Just to let you know I did intelligent updates everyday and these viruses still got through. This was with NAV 2003. NAV 2004 is even worse. The program that caught these viruses was AVAST! 4 Home Edition. I bought the pro version a while back and haven't had any problems with the product. I'm also an avast reseller in the USA. My website is www.v1ru5help.org . You can email me through my website or throuigh my profile. Also take a look at this link:\

http://www.avast.com/eng/products/avast_antivirus_ver.html

Also there are new features coming in the next release which should be version 4.5 . Everyone in this forum is very helpful. Also this forum is moderated by people who work for Alwil Software. They are here in the forum on a daily basis and on the weekends. If you look through the forum you will see why this forum is so great.  Also Norton contains alot of bloatware. I hope this helps.

Tangledwebster, a lot of users here are ex-Norton... So, I think it will be better to ask for specific topics and issues. Of course, we even can compare Norton with avast  8)

Here's a specific question about the comparison between NAV and AVAST HOME.

If I am correct about this,I've noticed NAV is resource intensive and talks to much via svchost.exe and other venues...

Is AVAST HOME absent of this behavoir?

Thanx in advance,

avast! communicates(updates) only by two modules that are components of avast! Antivirus. avast.setup and aswUpdSv.exe. Nothing else.

Does Avast do something that Norton Antivirus Doesn't?

NAV is actually a pretty good AV as far as detection goes. It  has the second best VB100% record of all the products tested. I use NAV on one of my PC's, and Avast on the other.  I personally feel that AV's fall under the same behavior as registry cleaners. That is, one will find something the other doesn't.  I do feel that NAV has the edge as far as detection goes, but I enjoy Avast better as far as memory use, ease of installation, and smooth operation on my system.

If it's better, then why, when I ditched it, did Avast find 6 viruses on my computer?
And your right. Norton is a hog. it takes over your computer and chokes it.
But, that's only my opinion.

- Norton is using a lot of cpu time.
- Norton is known to cause all kinds of errors
- Norton sometimes block the internet without you having changed a setting
- Norton doesn't have a forum where people are real fast with excelent help
- Norton doesn't have the nice skin future :D
- Ask Symantec for help and be prepaired to grow a beard ;D

And for the rest........ I let Avast speak for itself

I never had any problems with NAV.  It worked just fine for me on my AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Machine.  I switched to Avast when my subscription ran out.  I was ready to try something different.  After install, Avast found 3 Trojans on my system that NAV failed to find...even with Bloodhound set on high.  This was with NAV 2003.  I was impressed with Avasts performance and have stuck with it since.  I DO use Antivir as a backup OD scanner, but Avast will always be my primary OA scanner.

If you read my above post, I mention that I feel AV's are like the reg cleaning products that some people use. Each one will find things the other doesn't. I know people that dropped an AV after the subscription was up, and installed NAV, only to find a virus or two that was not detected by the other. It works both ways. I am not trying to push NAV at all, just making observations.  :)

Tipton,
Like you, we are not trying to push Avast! Most of us however are ex- NAV owners who have found something we feel is better.
Thank God, this is still a free country and you certainly have a right to use what ever AV program you decide to use. :)

Many Thanx to ALL...!

This forum is the kind of support that I need to regain confidence in the a/v world...

NAV left me without answers...

NAV  has always had a rather high degree of insensitivity towards the paying consumer....

Yet the big money clients I'm sure are their real focus...depite the probability that consumers like us have probably provided  for their bread and but since the begginnig and likely will be so in the future as well...

Again...Many Many Thanx.........!

Hi all!

I'm an ex-Norton user myself.

I've been using Avast for the last 12 months & never looked back.

Norton does have a really bad habit of missing viruses (Plus Norton chews resources like crazy)
