Title: Is Old Version Still Available
Post by: twobobbles on May 07, 2010, 08:30:04 AM
In the past I have used the older Avast 4

I have now installed Avast 5 but am far from impressed. The scan does not seem anywhere near as thorough as lots of things are being missed especially spyware applications like funwebproducts

Yes, the interface is better but the scan is so quick that it cannot possibly be anywhere near as effective as it was in version 4

If for example I choose a full system scan, the scan mode is shown as "normal" and there seems to be no way of changing that

Just not sure what to do and need some advice, would go back to the old (better) version at the drop of a hat

Fun Web Products Spyware is embedded in the freeware programs distributed by Fun Web Products. Once Fun Web Products freeware is installed on your PC, expect a number of pop-up advertisements within minutes of the installation. Fun Web Products freeware will also update itself from the host computer server and try to install other ad and malware programs on your computer without permission. Fun Web Products Spyware is distributed manually through the end-user downloading and installing one of his freeware tools and will result in immediate degradation of computer performance when installed on your computer.

I used the help and typed Scan Mode which produced no results and some general stuff that told me nothing

I uninstalled version 5 and downloaded the latest version of 4 from that link

The first scan showed 7 infections which were missed by version 5

Now we need some honesty about the new version and some resignations as it is clearly not an upgrade but an inferior product with the only benefits being purely cosmetic

You're wrong, the detection is better - though one is not a direct subset of the other (so yes, there might be files one version detects and the other doesn't - but avast! 5 generally detects more).
Since you don't say what exactly was detected, it's hard to say more - might be false positives, for example.

I use MalwareBytes pro just like Pondus as it is a good application to have with avast! V5 that is way better than avast! V4 IMHO.

today avast found a virus and tagged it malware:win32 gen...if avast can detect and remove malware , y do u guys buy MBAM??

Well I haven't bought it, only because I have been using SAS before MBAM came out and I bought the Pro version (not having two resident anti-spyware/malware applications installed). So in that regard it is the same simple, because it does things that avast doesn't do when you initiate an avast scan it doesn't specifically scan the registry.

They are also specialist applications much like avast is a specialist anti-virus application; I use a multi-application, multi-level approach to system security. As good as avast is, no single application will give 100% protection. They also offer different options not in avast, some of the ones in SAS Repair tab are particularly useful, see image. Though for the most part these additional options are available in the free product with few exceptions such as resident protection.

I bought mine because I felt it was a good program and since it is a one off subscription rather than an annual one I bought it.

Why would you use Avast! 4.8? Though 4.8 was good and have the ability to use skins, Avast! 5 is much easier to use, and the scans are better. The only thing I found was that Avast! didnt detect a virus in my registry, luckily I have other software to use to detect what Avast! doesnt. Avast is not perfect and will never be perfect, but considering all the antivirus software on the market, Avast! sure beats them all! When new versions come out, it is better to upgrade. This also includes your OS!

Take Care

If 5.0 is better than 4.8 why did 4.8 detect things that 5.0 missed.

The scans on 5.0 are far too quick and give the impression that they are no where near as thorough

twobobbles, igor already answered your question. avast 4.8 will detect files that 5 misses, and avast5 will detect files that 4.8 misses. But version 5 will find more threats than 4.8

So it's not an upgrade it's a farce

WinPatrol Plus is the paid option but the free version also does that.
