Title: So what about Avast5 + Firefox ?
Post by: Pascalou on May 11, 2010, 09:59:35 AM
Hello,

After installing avast5 from scratch (used the cleaner) I still have the same problem with firefox : latency time 3 to 5 seconds for clics or keyboard... It looks like I'm not the only one, but I couldn't find the solution here. Did I miss the god post ?

Avast 5.062 firefox 3.6.3

Chrome works perfectly.

Thanks for your help

Avast 5.062 firefox 3.6.3

Welcome to the forum..!
Firefox works well with avast, many users (see sig) have a configuration including Firefox 3.6.3...
What's your version of avast? 5.062 is not known to me. Latest build is 5.0.545.

Asyn,  I noticed in Pascalou's post that he used CCleaner to "install from scratch."  Was there a previous version of Avast on the machine and if so was the Avast Removal Tool used in Safe Mode?  CCleaner is a great software, but it won't properly uninstall previous versions of Avast.

Ooops, I missed that..! You're right..!! :)

Edit: Hmmm.... I reread OP's message, he/she is talking about 'cleaner', so not sure what is meant...
But as the avast version is also unclear, OP has to set it right. ;)

Oops...looks like the poster just signed off.  Maybe when he signs on they will see this:

How to uninstall previous versions of Avast:  http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility).

The newest version of Avast 5.0.545 can be found here http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html (http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html).

Well, thak you for your answers,

I have to complete the report about my system :o)

I'm logged now from my work, with avast and firefox working fine under windows 7.
I experiment problems with my home computer running XP sp3.

About my version of Avast, I just read the number from a right clic on the task bar icon, I will see that again as soon as I can ! I just re-install it this morning so i think it's up to date.

When having these troubles, I first uninstalled all firefox add-ons with no change. So i read on this forum about the uninstaller for avast5, (not ccleaner) and I ran it in safe mode, then install back Avast. No change in behavior.

My system works fine, Chrome works fine, the problem is only with FF and i don't understand it so I can't fix it...

don't use the avast uninstaller utility, use the "normal" uninstaller. The utility is just meant for situations when the "normal" uninstaller isn't accessible for any reason, it's in no way a mean to uninstall "better", it's the contrary in fact, it leaves more traces than the normal procedure.
Otherwise, update to 5.0.545, and for your issues, one possible answer is: "runs fine on Seven", "issues on XP" ;D (most issues with Avast 5 have been reported by XP users)

I also have the latest version of Avast free - trying to install on AMD64 3700, WinXP Home SP3, (all updates are up-to-date) - with FF 3.6.3.  Version 4.8 ran faultlessly. Version 5 seems to install OK, but on the SECOND reboot, it appears disabled in the system tray (triangular ! icon) and will NOT allow the bootup to finish. (20 minutes + and can't click on anything)

ONLY recourse is to Hard-reset and uninstall in SAFE mode

I have tried "Repair" - which is available in the CP Uninstall procedure - no change
I have tried loading Avast AFTER system files have loaded - no change
I have confirmed DIRECT connection (rather than AUTO) to the internet (I don't use a proxy) - no change

I AM running ZoneAlarm 8.0.298.000 (which is I think the latest) concurrently (which was fine with Avast 4.8)

I am at a loss to know what I am doing wrong.

I really like Avast - and have installed it for many aquaintances of mine - all of which have been grateful for the protection it affords.

Has anyone else had this "strangeness" with the latest version?

Usually it's not XP itself, but the software running on it... ;)

Well sure they do..!! ;)
Nevertheless some problems may only occur in combination of circumstances.
I maintain quite a couple of XP systems and all are running avast without any problems.

Thanks for your observations all . . .

I am running with 2Gb RAM.
I will try outing ZoneAlarm for the moment and see if that cures it.

Will report back . . .
