Title: You can test a site here...
Post by: polonus on May 16, 2010, 03:56:44 PM
Hi malware fighters,

Why test a particular site here: http://mtas.surfcontrol.com/mtas/MTAS.asp
This free service cab be used this to get a feel for the nature of some URLs without having to actually surf to the possibly malicious Web site. Mind you you have to also check at other places like Unmasked Parasites, Norton Safe Web or NoVirusThanks.org, WOT etc. because the results of these services may be overlapping.
One particularly found: http://mtas.surfcontrol.com/mtas/MTASResults.asp for host.atwebpages*com

I'm finding it hard to see the purpose of this site as it has zero information on what it actually does or what the categorisation means. Using your example host.atwebpages*com it says it "is in our list and categorized as Hosting Sites."

If you click the results page it promptly sends you to the actual site not any results page (dangerous if truly malicious), in this case WOT jumps in with poor reputation http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/host.atwebpages.com (http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/host.atwebpages.com).

So this site doesn't work if you want to see any results as the button purports it sends you to the actual site you were checking on.

Hi DavidR,

Just had to mention it, had not tested it, maybe had to look here for more info:

The filter is specifically for sites that work through anonymous proxy services,

Yes but that doesn't detract from the basic problem of the site instead of opening the results (it must have some or it couldn't categorise the site as Hosting Sites), it redirects to the suspect site.

To me that makes the whole point of visiting that site a waste of time, as the site provides little information, isn't working properly or is plainly broken. So I wouldn't recommend anyone visiting it in its present state.

Hi DavidR,

Agree with that, but first we had to establish that fact,
