What is the full text of the error ?

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avast.setup internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and do a manual update, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

This issue sounds almost similar to mine.  I purchased Avast (3 user)
5.0.545 a few weeks ago.  I use MagicJack as my home telephone.
Since installing Avast, my phone calls continue to be dropped, without
warning.  MagicJack has tried helping, I'm thinking this  is an avast
issue.  Can anyone, Please, offer help on settings...or has anyone had
this problem...that Avast & MagicJack conflict?
Thank You.

BOB,

Ever since I purchased Avast 5 (3 years, approx $100.00), my MagicJack telephone calls are
dropped, without warning.  The firewall goes crazy, all over the board, and the call goes dead.
This is NOT my imagination, I realize You're not having the same problem, but I need someone with
technical skills to help me...OR I want my money refunded.  I'm sure this is a great antivirus,
BUT it doesn't do me any good if I'm unable to use my telephone.  I've sent a request for help
to Avast, so far no response....should I contact CNET?
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !

redc0ugar,
I don't know if contacting CNET  will solve your problem.
You asked if any one else used MagicJack and I replied.
The fact that I don't have any problems also isn't my imagination.
Bragging about my technical skills wouln't solve your problem either.
What operating system are you using? What version of avast!5 are you running ? (Pro or IS)
If it's the Pro version, which firewall are you using?  Are you using a router and which one ???
The more information you provide, the greater the chances are that you'll receive an answer to your problem.

Bob,
I'm so sorry that I was rude. Besides working full time, I'm a caregiver to my Mother (alzheimers), Husband (diabetes), and Daughter (autism).  It's so embarrassing, when I'm on the phone with
Dr's & the phone calls are dropped.

My OS is Vista 64 bit. Avast 5 IS.  I use a linksys wireless router to get computer service on our
second floor.
Being I'm having such a difficult time & my computer skills are minimal, do You believe I might have
a chance at getting a prorated refund?  I purchased this program 4/24/2010 for $100.00.
Thank You.

redc0ugar, we can guide you and help to troubleshoot. Anyway, you can always ask for a refund.
Which was your old antivirus and firewall before AIS?

Thank You so much for responding.
I had the paid version of Windows One Care (antivirus & firewall).
Please, if the fix is too technical, for MagicJack, how can I request
a refund?

Respectfully....

Was it fully uninstalled?

Please, if the fix is too technical, for MagicJack, how can I request a refund?
Probably the site you've bought it (the reseller) or an email to sales (at) avast (dot) com.

Was it fully uninstalled?
Yes.  I uninstalled Windows One Care.  Just now I did a "search" and did not find
anything with the program's name.  Would it be really difficult to fix, so Avast's Firewall
quits interfering with my MagicJack telephone calls?

Please, if the fix is too technical, for MagicJack, how can I request a refund?
Probably the site you've bought it (the reseller) or an email to sales (at) avast (dot) com.

I think this might work...I received an email from a Tech.
I was instructed to add MagicJack.exe to the group...so the
firewall allows the connection.  IF this fix poses any problems,
I'll re-contact You...truly, I appreciate Your patience and help.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !

I'm doing something wrong.  The firewall is still shutting down my calls.
Here is what the Tech said to do:
Run avast! Internet Security and from the left menu choose firewall
2) Select "Application rules" and then click on the "New application rule" button
3) Choose Group for this file and then browse for application's executable (magicjack.exe) that you want to allow in the firewall
4) Then just allow all connections in the Allowed Connection column.
I do #1 & 2. I don't know what it means to "Choose Group."  And I'm lost when I get to #4 of the
instructions.
I tried making a telephone call to a lawyer, so I shut the firewall down...my phone call was still
disconnected.  Do Avast technicians have the program similar to Dell, or when I've called Canon for
help with my printer, they can go to my computer remotely & change settings?  I hate to lose
Avast as my AV, I know it's the best.

on #3...I don't know which group to choose from the list.  Please help.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: Gargamel360 on May 27, 2010, 09:49:17 PM
You could give it its own group ( see "new group" at bottom of application rules section, name it MJ or MagicJack or whatever is easiest) or just put it in the "other" group, if one exists on your firewall.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: redc0ugar on May 27, 2010, 10:06:40 PM
When I click on New Application Rule, the list that appears is:
Microsoft
Adobe
Google
Mozilla
Other
Piriform
Safer Networking.
I don't see "new group" or area to just type in MagicJack.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: Gargamel360 on May 27, 2010, 10:10:25 PM
"New Group" should be directly to the left of the New App. rule button?
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: redc0ugar on May 27, 2010, 10:11:37 PM
When I click on "other" and a screen appears "System Wow 64."
I type in MagicJack or MJ...i get a popup that says "file not found"

Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !

If the firewall doesn't auto-create an app. rule for a program when it runs, (always has for me), is your firewall's default rules set on block?
check>firewall settings>>expert settings>>policies>>default rules. Set it to auto-decide or ask if it is set on block.  Then run program, see if it creates an app. rule, you can adjust it after it is established to what you want.

Otherwise right-click on group you created, chose "new app. rule", then manually find the file you want to open.

The long list that opens, that shows names of programs....I don't know which one to open.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: redc0ugar on May 27, 2010, 11:04:30 PM
I checked the settings, the firewall is at auto-decide.
Magic Jack is on the list of programs, when I right click & click on new app. rule, the
LONG list appears...I don't know which application, from the list to select.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !

That I cannot say, as I've never had a MagicJack, although I'd imagine its something like magicjack.exe. It might not be in the WoW64 folder, maybe program files (x86).
Also still an issue of possible old firewall remnants from your previous installation.  If this continues to fail you might consider reading this>>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930158 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/930158), if you didn't use the cleanup tool already.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !

No, MagicJack isn't in THE list, that's why I don't know what to click on.

Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: redc0ugar on May 27, 2010, 11:51:45 PM
ohhh wait, that's the list i get when I click on MJ.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: redc0ugar on May 27, 2010, 11:55:42 PM
I see that's the list I get when I click...I then clicked on "computer"...how You have it
highlighted.  I thought maybe You wanted me to search then, for MJ, under the "computer"
heading...still nothing shows up.
I tried following the directions for windows explaining how to delete One Care...I'm unable to
find anything on my system labeled One Care.  I know I uninstalled it.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: Gargamel360 on May 28, 2010, 12:01:32 AM
I'd look for MJ to be in the Program Files (x86) folder.

Cleaning tools are for getting rid of stuff that gets left behind that you can't see/find.  So you might have old remnants, regadless if you can see anything or not.

Garg,
You're one heck of a Good Person.  You've allowed me so much of Your time & patience.
Being I'm not proficient in computers or programs, this is becoming kinda, sorta overwhelming.
I'm nervous that I might click or set something ...& throw the whole system into a
breakdown.  I know You know what You're doing, but my fingers...have their own minds.
I need to contact Sales@Avast.com to ask them to process a credit.  Shaking my Head*
I don't know which anti virus to go with now...I strongly dislike norton & mcafee.

Thank You so much...Your kindness has been so appreciated.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: Gargamel360 on May 28, 2010, 12:30:11 AM
I'd hardly advocate that.  If you have old security remnants they will continue to cause problems, likely doesn't matter which you get.

Possible fix? (if indeed it is an old onecare remnant causing problem)
1:Uninstall Avast! from Add/Remove programs, then reboot.
2:Download Avast! uninstaller from here http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility), follow posted instructions
3:Download and run the OneCare cleaning tool from the MS linked site I showed earlier
4:Reinstall/reactivate Avast!

To run the OneCare Utility, it downloads a program, but won't run it because it says I must
be The Administrator.  How do I convince Windows, I AM The Administrator?

See my above edit, for start.

To answer your Q......log in on Admin. account?  All security installation/removal should generally be done with the admin. account.....so this might also be a source of your trouble.

I telephoned Dell for help. The tech removed malwarebytes & spybot, she said Avast was enough
security for my system.   She told me to download Avast again, I've tried applying my license..but
I'm getting a message that my "trial period" has ended.  I purchased a 3 year contract on 4/24/10.
I'm unable to get past the download...so basically I don't have any protection on my computer.
I'm getting a message from Avast "unable to insert the license file."
OMG I've never had such a hard time from an AV Program.

redc0ugar,
After you installed MagicJack, did you upgrade the software?
There are 2 updates one for Vista and one for Win7.
You can get them from MagicJack or from MySharedFiles (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/)
You'll find the updates in the MagicJack (http://mysharedfiles.no-ip.org/MagicJack) folder.
Pick the one for your operating system.

Simple, one is marked 4Vista  the other one ends in 4Win7
Choose the one that fit's your operating system. (From what I read, probably Vista)

Is the license file labeled  .dat or .avastlic?
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !

avastlic.
Tonight, Avast did a firewall lockdown on my computer, per my Cable ISP.
I spent hours on the tele. with Dell...had to turn my HD to zero & need to
reformat when I wake-up.
I'm done, done, done.
I need my subscription money back from avast...the marriage has ended.
Dell techs recommended 3 other Antivirus programs.  Tonight was NOT fun.
In spite of everything, thank You and Bob.

Reformat certainly is overkill.
Simply double click on the .avastlic file and it will register your avast! program.

Greetings everyone...I just purchased the Avast Internet Security (with a 2year coverage for 3 PCs). Everything went well installing it with my 2 PCs (OS: windows7 & XPhome) however, with my 3rd PC (OS: XPprofessional) it won't install and an error reads:
AN Error 0(0000) has occurred...LAST PERFORMED OPERATIONS WAS SPAWNING!

please guide me on what to do...I'm deploying to Iraq in two days and need to bring this laptop with me. All the best!

I believe the most common times this error happens is
when you don't install with Admin account.,
or you still have another AV on your laptop
or your previous AV failed to completely uninstall.
Title: Re: update avast 5 ...ERROR !
Post by: Lisandro on May 31, 2010, 03:53:13 AM
Spawning error is generally related to corrupted download.
Are you using the same setup.exe file to install in all computer?
