Title: vps update problems
Post by: itavast on June 01, 2010, 12:20:21 PM
Hi avast users
i've installed 5.0.545 version past week, but I've never succeeded to run the updating (automatic or manual).
Running manually the vsupupd.exe file I have this msg

"can't install vps update. please report following errorcodes:
ver : 5.0.545
SI:0x00000002
ST:0xFFFFFFFE
LE:0X00000000"

Running the updating from the interface, it always responds that my version is the last and it's already updated, but it's not true (for example today I have 100530-1 version but I checked there is already version 100601). Yesterday I uninstalled avast and reinstalled it, then run vpsupd.exe with 1005301 and it succeeded, but today it's still the same
This is the log using the interface (i have proxy):

Did you set avast proxy settings into the update tab?

yes, I tried also to specify direct connection but of course i had connection problem. With proxy set no problems appear in the log , file prod-ais.vpx seems to be downloaded correctly, but i look at the file property in the C:\Programmi\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup folder and it was modified at 30 may 2010, 21.03.37, so it was never replaced by new dowload.

I wouldn't check the changes by the folder date and time.
I'll trust in the avast GUI and logs.

itavast, ok, it could be a GUI problem.
Can you post the last lines of the logs?

i posted it in my first post (extract from file setup.log). I don't know if there is another log file, in this case pls tell me how to report it.

The log is that, but there aren't enough lines to analyze.
You can use multiply posts or upload (attach) it. If it is too big, save with another name and let only the last updates group of lines (they start with Started and end with Stopped.

Sorry, you've included the same log of the first post.
The result is:
Code: [Select]
12:01:18 min/gen  Return code: 0x20000001 [Nothing done]
What happened before? What are the other updates results?

ok, i included what happened yesterday, when i uninstalled and reinstalled avast and then ran succesfully vpsupd.exe manually.
Today when i tried to update manually (i've dowloaded new version of vpsupd) no log is generated, only the error message that i reported in my first post.

I've already registered my free version with a license key. I've also administrator rights on my PC so  I don't know why acces deny.
Attached proxy settings

I've set my computer with 'always connected' option and tried again. But now the updating seems to be in a loop. I've checked in the setup.log and i've 4 times the same log of the first post, the updating window is always in the same state as shown in the attached and no job avastsetup running.
Thank you for the assistance, now i have to leave the forum... i'll came back in 2 days... :)

Most probably the error is in the proxy settings. Double check.
See you round.

@ Tech,

If he has a proxy (he's telling you that he has a proxy), he shouldn't be set for "always connected."  Shouldn't he just have it set to the proxy settings?

And depending on how fast his downloads are, perhaps he may want to change his updates from automatic to ask me when updates are available so he can download them at a convenient time depending on his speed.  I have several PC's and some are on broadband and some are on (very slow) dial-up.  Perhaps this may help.  But we need to wait for the OP to return.

I think they're not correlated. The proxy could be set for dial-up or for permanent connection.

@ SafeSurf
The Direct Connection option in the Update, Proxy settings, doesn't mean they have an 'always on connection,' just that their connection is direct and not through any proxy and that can be dial-up or always on.

So they should set their connection method accordingly and set the Proxy if they use one otherwise set it to Direct connection (no proxy).

Hi,

I have the same problem. For some reason, sometimes I downloaded the updated. The updated can be downloaded successfully. But when I click it to update, there is this error (see my sshot). But I can update it Online.
Could you pleasetell me why I always get an error like that?
Thanks

incredibly but this morning... IT WORKS!
I tried to update from the GUI but first I connected to Internet by IExplorer, so I put user and pwd for the proxy by IE interface.
So maybe the problem is that Avast need the proxy to be connected before, even if I set user and pwd in the avast settings too.
I'll try again in the next day and tell you if the problem is solved definitely.
Thank you all!

@ DavidR and Tech...thank you for your info above.

@ itavast, It sounds like things are probably working for you because the settings are correct for you now.  Let us know if you have any additional problems.  Glad to hear things are going well  :).

@michell,

How do you connect to the Internet (broadband/cable, dial-up, etc.)?
Have you tried downloading the update again?
Are you getting any other errors with avast?  What build of avast do you have?
Did you have any other AV on your machine prior to avast?

@SafeSurf: thanks for your quick response.
I used cable. My Avast Free version is 5.0.545.
Today I have downloaded the update manually and I got an error like a screenshot that I have sent when I run the update.
No, I don't have any AV on my PC.

When I used Avast 4.x, It's OK, I didn't get an error when I update it manually..

thanks

I suggest an uninstall of Avast and CLEAN install to fix your problems.

Please follow these instructions:

Save a copy of newest version of Avast.

Save the http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility (http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility) on your hard drive.

Disconnect from the Internet at this time.

Uninstall Avast through "Add/Remove Programs".

Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.

Reboot twice.

Clean your computer up.

Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.

Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.

Register your free copy or add the license key.

Reset your settings, if needed.

Run a scan (try a Full System Scan initially to check for malware).

Please let us know if you have any further questions or problems after completing the above or questions prior to completing the above mentioned steps.  Thank you.
